Principles of Physical Chemistry, Second Edition uniquely uses simple physical models as well as rigorous treatments for understanding molecular and supramolecular systems and processes. In this way the presentation assists students in developing an intuitive understanding of the subjects as well as skill in quantitative manipulations. The unifying nature of physical chemistry is emphasized in the book by its organization - beginning with atoms and molecules, and proceeding to molecular assemblies of increasing complexity, ending with the emergence of matter that carries information, i.e. the origin of life, a physicochemical process of unique importance. The aim is to show the broad scope and coherence of physical chemistry.

From the Back Cover

"This admirable text provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of physical chemistry including quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics/thermodynamics. The presentation assists the students in developing an intuitive understanding of the subjects as well as skill in quantitative manipulations. Particularly exciting is the treatment of larger molecular systems. With a firm but gentle hand, the student is led to several organized molecular assemblies including supramolecular systems and models of the origin of life. By learning of some of the most productive areas of current chemical research, the student may see the discipline as an active, young science in addition to its many accomplishments of earlier years. This text makes physical chemistry fun and demonstrates why so many find it a stimulating and rewarding profession."
—Edel Wasserman, President (1999) of the American Chemical Society, regarding the first edition of this book.

Takes readers from atoms to increasingly complex molecular assemblies to the emergence of life

Principles of Physical Chemistry presents a novel approach to physical chemistry that emphasizes the use of a few fundamental principles to quantitatively describe the nature of molecules and their assemblies. It begins with atoms and molecules, using the electron-in-a-box model to illustrate the essential features of quantum mechanics and why atoms and molecules exist. Thermodynamics is not introduced in the classical manner, considering the first and second law as postulates, but approached by studying assemblies of molecules statistically. The authors proceed to molecular assemblies of increasing complexity, evolving from ideal gases to real gases and solutions, then to macromolecules and supramolecular machines, and ending with the search for the logical conditions and chemical requirements for physicochemical processes leading to life's origin, the emergence of matter that carries information. This text is ideal for both undergraduate and graduate courses in physical chemistry, providing a basis for understanding the nature of chemical processes in biology, chemistry, and engineering.

Principles of Physical Chemistry examines several important topics that are often overlooked, yet are critical to a full understanding of the field, including:

  • Macromolecules

  • Principles of organized molecular assemblies

  • Construction of supramolecular machines

  • Basic mechanisms in the emergence of information producing and carrying forms of matter

Throughout the text, actual experimental data are used to help readers understand the practical implications of theoretical developments. Simple physical models and examples are used to explain molecular and supramolecular systems and processes. The CD-ROM packaged with the text offers problems, exercises, interactive Mathcad exercises and data tables with search functions that enable readers to apply their newfound skills and knowledge to solving actual problems. In addition, the CD contains Foundations and Justifications, in which mathematical proofs and derivations are presented.

The first fully coherent, continuous and truly modern text!
By Giovani Bassi
By Giovani_Bassi@Hotmail.com
This book is really, really new in its disposition. I admire that someone still has courage to follow his (or hers) own ideas, instead of just going with established trends, that are not necessarily very good. The authors are brilliant scientists, and the sharpness of their intellects and their passion is with you all the time. I must again be very brief, but can give the following comments on this masterpiece:
- The authors accomplish "the impossible": the book allows the reader to refer to individual chapters - as reference, then, thanks to very lucid, simple mathematical derivations, always with the weaknesses in the models used clearly defined - as well as to read the entire book and "survive" - i.e. understand what one is reading - without using any other sources parallel.
- The authors start with defining the few q.m. notions, very simply and lucidly, that are then used throughout the book (modern as it is!), rather than using the archaic introduction comprised of abstract classical-thermodynamic discussions, that set out to uselessly "reinvent the wheel", by refusing to take help of the fact that we know about the discontinuity of matter (i e atoms). No more q.m. is presented than that which is needed in the rest of the book, otherwise a great danger to coherence, in my opinion (a disesase of most modern "phone-directory texts"). And this is typical of the book: no more is introduced than that which is needed - and then, those concepts are used throughout, afterwards, which is wonderful for the user: it both lets him experince control and also is the best sort of review, to actually use the concepts learned.
- Almost every theory presented is immediately afterwards applied to actual, down-to-earth chemistry, always involving familiar undergraduate topics, mostly from organic and biochemistry. Again, this is valuable as review for this courses and further reflection. Note that the examples are always VERY, VERY INTERESTING.
- As indicated, the book presents one whole, unified view, and what will be to the immense joy of all students, these authors point out, carefully, whenever something is observed that should be surprising (surprising to all those that are not already post-doctors in this area; again a stupid habit in other books of the "anthology" variety, like Atkins, Moore..., that just give you a wild array of topics, naturally RELATED, but in the books only slightly CONNECTED). Actually, often an observation is first presented, and then the situation is investigated - very beautiflly and simply.
- More advanced material is collected in boxes, but is still referred to, at later times, when appropriate.
- The authors have taken much trouble in presenting some "science philosophy", asking you to become aware of your own thinking process, and even questioning the habit of assuming correctness of our mind. I just love this.
- The introduction to Supramolecular Machines is extremely fascinating, BUT although it acts as a "carrot" for the reader to get through the earlier chapters, it is not so strongly connected with the rest of the book that it deserves mentioning in the title itself. I see this as "advertising" on the part of the authors for this area - which I do not criticize. This area (hard to define!) might well become as important as biotechnology.
*A WEAKNESS in course use: there are no unsolved exercises or problems. But somehow, exercises would have marred the fantastic coherence. This could be seen as the best HANDBOOK of the PRINCIPLES of physical chemistry ever in print - like the title says. Many short, self-contained chapters, with solved problems that are anything but routine... it's perfect. Anyone can use it - and enjoy its exciting style, simultaneously. *Other weaknesses: poor-quality pictures (but with good descriptions). Not very good index. Rotten binding, as always, these days: the book just falls apart, almost at once.

Yes, this is really an entirely fresh start for P-Chem!
By Ola Johannesson
This is, as Dr Bassi points out, really a new and modern book. It starts with Q.M. and introduces only formulas that are simple enough to be able to find use throughout the rest of the text. The whole book is just so coherent! The author knows all the time what you know, from following his book carefully, and pushes you all the time to your limit - but not beyond, as the mathematical derivations really are "neat". All other books are broken up into three major parts, between which there is only superficial connection. Here, the same equations govern every concept touched upon. It gives you a great feeling of satisfatcion and understanding! Overall, the book feels more like a novel, for its exciting style of writing and, again, continuity! (In spite of using very few words - this is definitely not the work of a graphoaniac!) If this is a textbook, then it sure is one of an all new breed... I look forwards to the next edition, with better binding and fewer misprints. And perhaps a supplementary volume with excercises, too. Get this book now! Even if you know this stuff, following the golden threads that the authors lay out, in a very personal and novel way, might let you experience some connections anew, or at least test your own skill agianst some unusual conclusions that pop ur here and there.

Kuhn's approarch to PChem
By Client X
I reviewed this book (and economy international edition) as a substitute for Atkins' PChem and this is what I can say:

IN GENERAL...
-Is superficial: it doesn't translate the results of the equations and calculations into a molecular interpretation or even a fully developed concept. Many of the formulas are not properly derived and just appear as an act of magic. It's one of those "what equation do I need to know" books instead of a "why chemical substances behave the way the do" book.
-It uses the micro-then-macro approach, and if you want to go the other way the book doesn't make it easy, since some classical themo concepts rely on understanding thermo stats.
-It develops "top science" topics within the book better than most.
-Probelms are OK but lack the real-life-application approach.

IN SPECIFIC...
-About Quantum: it presents the "real version" of the hydrogen orbitals (aka. general chemistry textbook forms) without going through the complex one (how else do you solve a centrosymmetric field problem?); it doesn't explain the meaning and real origin of quantum numbers (beyond GChem); it doesn't compare valence bond and molecular orbital theory and the concepts attached to each theory (and each theory alone); molecular spectroscopy is OK.
-About molecular thermodynamics: one chapter is not enough, sorry!
-About classical themodynamics: first law is not properly introduced (historical origin); enthalpy is presented as a given and not derived or its meaning explained; it doesn't describe the differences between heat and work; entropy is explained by Boltzmann's equation (good) but it's magically connected to Clausius' inequality instead of Prigogine's equality (hello, 20th century calling!); heat capacity and absolute entropy are not related to the structure and composition of matter; thermochemistry is very poorly developed, and the concept of combustion is not properly defined; irreversible procesess (the ones that happen in real world) are not properly treated; both free energy and equilibrium constants are not properly introduced and explained; real substances are not properly presented; the power of compressibility factor and Joule-Thomson coefficient are neglected; it doesn't deal with multicomponent phase diagrams and its application to extraction and distillation; non-ideal mixtures are only viewed as Debye-Hckel (which is not properly discussed).
-About "other" topics: it's great with electrochemistry, except it's not related to thermochemistry; surface chemistry is so poorly treated isotherms are nowhere to be seen; kinetics, polymers and proteins are more than OK.

IN CONCLUSION:
-I don't like it.

The Bunker, by James P. O'Donnell

Here is an unforgettable, graphic account of the final days in the Fhrer's headquarters, deep under the shattered city of Berlin as World War II in Europe drew to a close. From James P. O'Donnell's interviews with fifty eyewitnesses to the madness and carnage—everyone from Albert Speer to generals, staff officers, doctors, Hitler's personal pilot, telephone operators, and secretaries—emerges an account that historian Theodore H. White has hailed as "superb . . . quite simply the most accurate and terrifying account of the nightmare and its end I have ever read."

Living like a mole with the leader of the Third Reich
By Mannie Liscum
If you've seen the movie version (with Anthony Hopkins as Hitler) you'll have expectations - and like all books I know of you'll be disappointed by the movie! This book is easy reading and provides a lot of insight into the last month of Adolf Hitler as the leader of the "living dead" that rarely if ever left their underground lair. All the major personalities of the Fuhrerbunker are dealt with, as well as their ultimate destinies - some escaping, some being captured and spending years in Russian prisons, and yet others - including Hitler and Goebbles - dying at or in the bunker. I found this book extremely thorough (relative to other sources on the subject) and was not disappointed. All in all a good read.

The definitive book on the Fuhrerbunker
By J. Michael
"The Bunker" is simply the most detailed and fascinating account of the events in the Berlin Fuhrerbunker I've yet read. Written in 1978, long after the last witnesses were released from Soviet captivity, O'Donnell managed to interview almost all of the surviving actors from the Bunker tragedy. The only people he didn't meet were Johann Rattenhuber, who died in 1966, and Johanna Wolf, who never told anyone anything because she considered it a private secretary's duty to remain private. However, he spoke extensively with all the rest of the surviving people who witnessed Hitler's last days with their own eyes: Speer, Bauer, Guensche, Misch, Mohnke, Axmann, Schenk, Junge, et al. With this wealth of primary sources, their experiences are almost palpable as O'Donnell brings you down into the bunker for Hitler's last days and out onto the streets of burning Berlin for the final breakout. Though I've never read Joachim Fest's "Inside Hitler's Bunker" (which, because it was only published in 2002, after most of the witnesses were dead, I can't imagine has much new information to offer), O'Donnell's "The Bunker" is at least far superior to Trevor-Roper's revered history. I believe it is the best book written on the subject.

I really can't understand the criticisms of this book. So-called "academic" historians chide its "journalistic" approach, a term which means- I suppose- that O'Donnell actually spoke to witnesses and did original research as opposed to writing a book based completely on other historians' previously published works. Such incestuous shuffling and borrowing is actually considered a virtue in the rarified world of the court-historians' guild, where a historian's worth is judged solely by the length of his bibliography and the depth of his conformity to establishment opinion. I'll take the "journalistic" approach any day, thank you very much. David Irving earned the scorn of the court historians for much the same reason- his industriousness in digging up previously un-discovered or ignored witnesses and documents. Even though O'Donnell had a bone to pick with Irving, they both embarrassed the historians of WWII who never stepped foot out of their library and whose "research" amounted to mere regurgitation.

Similarly, I really don't understand some of the objections put forth by lay reviewers on amazon and elsewhere. It's doubtful whether some of them even read the book. For instance, O'Donnell never speculated on Bormann's survival; he stated flat-out that his body was found and positively identified. He also never said that Bauer had orders to fly Hitler to Asia, but did verify that it was technically possible. I'm also confused at these reviewers' objections to O'Donnell's account of Speer's assassination plans. O'Donnell devotes a mere 5 or 6 pages to Speer's admittedly unverifiable, but historically significant, plan to assassinate Hitler. It would have been negligent to have omitted such a claim. As for "Mata O'Hara", the fact is that there_was_a leak in the Hitler court. The Germans confirm it and the British confirm it. O'Donnell speculates that "Das Leck" was Fegelein's mistress, but he doesn't pretend that his theory is the final word. Who_are_these naysayers and what have they been smoking? It's standard practice that criticism should be based on fact. Until someone proves otherwise, this is the definitive book on the Bunker.

This is not just a book about Hitler!
By Scott Swindle
It is about the Bunker, and ALL those who lived and died there in the final days of the war. O'Donnell was a US Army officer who was released from active duty to be a reporter for Newsweek magazine: "This involved a quick shift from the rank of captain to civilian correspondent, with no time to change uniform." It was in this capacity that he first visited the bunker, when Soviet-US relations had not yet degenerated. Along with Soviet and British sightseers, he entered the bunker on July 4, 1945, and thus got a good look around before the Soviets closed it off to Westerners in September. This evidently haunted O'Donnell, for years later he returned to Berlin, interviewing nearly every surviving member of the bunker experience. What we get here is not a historian's view, but rather that of a good investigative reporter, who uses firsthand sources whenever possible. It is impossible to write this story without some deductive reasoning, however, and O'Donnell shares his theories. He discounts some of the crackpot theories, such as Martin Bormann's survival myth. I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in the Third Reich or the end of World War II. It is interesting to note that Hitler's death occurs approximately 2/3 of the way through the book. The rest of the book concerns itself with the attempted breakout of the bunker survivors, the morbid deaths of Joseph and Magda Goebbels and their six children, and the surrender of the bunker (by its coverall-wearing chief engineer to a bunch of female Russian medics--who promptly made off with the late Eva Braun's bras!)
Chapters are as follows:
1. The Caveman--details how Hitler slowly became subterranean, disdaining light and fresh air, and how he preferred to live underground and conduct all business from the bunker.
2. The Thirteenth Bunker--an outline of all the bunkers used (and not used) by Hitler throughout the Reich--in Germany, France, the Ukraine, Poland.
3. The Bunker Brutus--Albert Speer's little-known plot (as related by himself) to assassite Hitler and the Mountain People by using poison gas in the ventilation system.
4. The Mountain People--an overview of Hitler's entourage, so called because they were the court favorites at Berchtesgaden, Hitler's mountain retreat. Included are Hans Baur, Hitler's pilot; Eva Braun; Hitler's physicians; Bormann; Erich Kempka, Hitler's chauffeur; Linge, his valet; and more SS men, secretaries, security detail, etc.
5. Farewells--It dawns on all present that Hitler has no intention of leaving the bunker and will die in Berlin.
6. Casualty Station--Dr. Schenk is treating wounded in a nearby casualty station during the Battle of Berlin when he is summoned to the bunker. He was not part of the 'inner circle' and thus his views are that of a 'normal' person on the events in the bunker.
7. The Lady Vanished--account of SS General Fegelein, Eva Braun's brother-in-law, who was seeing a lady on the side who was, in all likelihood, a spy for the Allies. She is here called 'Mata O'Hara', because of her theorized Irish origins, but she disappeared from the scene of world events during this time. Fegelein suffered the ultimate punishment because of this.
8. The Shot Nobody Heard--Details the suicides of Adolph and Eva Hitler, and the disposal of their bodies.
9. Death of the Mythmaker--The suicides of Dr. Goebbels and his family are examined in detail.
10. The Breakout--The remaining survivors attempt to escape the Soviet juggernaut and make it to the Allies or remaining German pockets of resistance.
11. The Flight That Never Was--Lays to rest the myth that Martin Bormann escaped Berlin.
12. The Double Symposium--The suicide of Hewel, Hitler's Foreign Embassy Minister (and second to von Ribbentrop).
13. Last Man Out--The only two men remaining (alive) in the bunker--SS Sergeant Rochus Misch and engineer Hentschel. Henstchel, a civilian, sends Misch packing because he doesn't want any SS around when the Soviets arrive. This chapter is almost comical, with Hentschel puttering around the bunker, making sure everything is still in working order, washing the dishes, etc. Then he is captured by the Russians (several times).

Review
"I can't imagine how this nook could be better...the definitive read for Bowiephiles." Uncut. "The complete David Bowie certainly lives up to its title... Pegg's opinionated and witty prose turns it into that rare thing: a reference book that sparkles." MOJO. "Pegg has a keen critical intelligence." Sunday Telegraph.

From the Publisher
The career of David Bowie has been one of the most colorful and intriguing in modern rock history. Now, in "The Complete David Bowie," Nicholas Pegg chronicles the star's every move--from his first appearance as balladeer Davy Jones in the 60s, and his spectacular, gender-bending debut in the 70s as Ziggy Stardust, which made him an international sensation, to his starring roles in films like "The Man Who Fell to Earth" and his more mature work on albums like "Zion." This definitive reference also includes a detailed production history and an analysis of all of Bowie's albums; hundreds of entries with facts and anecdotes about all his songs, including unreleased rarities; and set lists and histories of every live show. Moving beyond his music, the book charts Bowie's career on stage and screen, his videos, and more.

About the Author
Nicholas Pegg is an actor, theatre director and writer. This book is the culmination of a lifetime’s interest in David Bowie’s work.

Much More than Encyclopedic, This Is A Complex Structured Reference Guide When Used Right
By James W Polichak
As so many others have said, this is a wonderful reference book, and wonderful for that purpose.

But there is another book that is obscured by the focus and format of the book: a reference biography, a strange creature, one eagerly sought by some but rarely found.

The main focus of this encyclopedia are the songs. All the songs - songs released, songs performed, songs written for others, songs written by others, songs unreleased, songs partially formed, songs of rumor only, even songs of rumor disconfirmed. This forms the bulk of the work, and is the first section. The presentation is alphabetical. This has its advantages and its drawbacks. If you want to know about a specific song, it is easy to find. But the lack of connection to the album or chronological framework impedes a more cohesive understanding. In this electronic era, my hope would be for a Complete David Bowie 2.0, where all options exist for the compendium of songs, alphabetical order, album-by-album, year-by-year, concert tour-by-concert tour.

This framework is already largely present in the other sections of the book, especially sections 2 (The Albums) and 3 (Live). I recommend highly starting by reading the section on Official Albums first and Live second, which is what I did. Weaving them together would offer another insightful framework over Bowie's career, as most albums were followed by a tour. Since Bowie was frequently hard at work (or even substantially satisfied with) his next album while touring for the most recent release, there was also a tension displayed in the sequence of album-tour-album that was Bowie's practice, with the styling of the upcoming release influencing the presentation of the live songs from the most recent album and older choices.

Reading The Albums and Live straight through as an introduction provides valuable insights into Bowie's career, with enough information that I'd imagine just about anyone would learn from.

On a basic level, it gives a sense of the thematic structure of each album and the songs contained within. Obviously, from listening to the albums we've developed our own senses of these themes and how they connect and conflict through the songs. But Pegg provides information about the people Bowie was working with in a way that is difficult to derive from listening and liner notes, and even more so about the people Bowie was being introduced to (Elizabeth Taylor arranged for Bowie and John Lennon to meet at a party at her house in 1974), friends with (John Lennon introduced Bowie to the Uncle Floyd show of Heathen's Slip Away; now I can imagine myself as a child sharing my Uncle Floyd time with David and John, from 50 miles and more than a couple of decades away).

It also gives a more complete, often challenging and corrective, interpretation of Bowie's albums as they were intended (expressed through interviews with Bowie and others involved). This is combined with details about the critical and popular response to the albums. This comes at a level that would be impossible for just about anyone who wasn't present throughout Bowie's 5 decade career to develop. I mostly came into the Bowiesphere in the mid 1990s, not long before 1.0 Outside was released. That was also the time, though, of both the Rykodisk extra-track releases and the BMG Music Club "Buy 1 CD at regular price, get 7 free", so I quickly amassed everything from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters, and those came with the extra tracks. Then came the mid-1990s creative spurt that, for me, was paired with trips to Europe where high-quality bootlegs were much more available and much cheaper than in the US. It was a lot to enjoy, a lot to process, but also done mainly in an absence of historical progress and context.

Pegg's Album and Live performance analysis sections gave me much of this structure that I hadn't had time to develop on my own. It still came in a brief amount of time, for me these sections were page-turners that kept me up too late. The 1970s were truly a time of chaos kept barely controlled. Bowie's stamina, appetite for consumption and for creation, ecumenicalism, much more apparent and much more impressive. So much was somehow both "make it up as you go along" and "I meant it all the time" in an incredible way.

The Albums and Live sections also revealed just how much of Bowie's reputation, the "Bowie is..." and the "What is Bowie?" was created in retrospect. Much of his art was treated critically and skeptically by the music press and especially the more mainstream press. The same was true for the young music enthusiasts out there, especially in the US. Ziggy Stardust in 1972 was a bigger star than David Bowie, but Ziggy Stardust was a bigger star in 1977 than 1972, in 1982, in 1987, in 1992, in 1997... but somehow by 2002 David Bowie was most definitely a bigger star than Ziggy Stardust.

The albums became more of a critical presence and on the radio and turntable as the tours grew and became more orchestrated - and as Bowie took up just about every opportunity to collaborate, to appear on television. Pegg's work shows that at least one group seemed to fully embrace Bowie from the start even if it had dangerous effects, Hollywood and the American film and TV star community. But it was when Bowie moved on to the next album and persona that the previous album became the "definitive" Bowie album, and the critical success in hindsight. Until 1982...though Pegg provides evidence, however uncomfortable now, that the tragedies of the 1980s were frequently given more favorable critical and popular responses than his now enshrined and bronzed giants of the 1970s. Perhaps we can put that up to a desire to over-compensate for the overly challenging response given to his 1970s work. But also to a desire to be seen to embrace the latest shift in style from the start as Bowie's reputation for being ahead of the trends grew, that somehow recycling Iggy Pop songs and a collage of other cover songs would be considered ground-breaking in a year or two. Even Tin Machine.

As we know, every release from Black Tie White Noise was Bowie's strongest work since Scary Monsters, except Reality, following Heathen like Lodger following Low and "Heroes".

Even if you were there, Pegg's compendium is valuable to understanding the Bowie "projects" of this second phase. Bowie's early and full absorption with video, multi-media, and the internet, and his early and full campaign to further their development and integration into the world of music came to their apogee with 1.0 Outside, Hours..., and Heathen. The wealth of material produced with these music albums can be seen to be as integral to the music as the live performances, making the boundaries of these artistic endeavors undefinable. Bowie himself was also more forthcoming about himself and his art, happily discussing the tensions within his art that had always existed more explicitly, but also the new tension between the dark elements of his creative output and his happiness with his married life with Iman in Manhattan.

At the same time, the greater wealth of material, of videos and video games, of remixes and "extra tracks" in an abundance nearly the size of a traditional 1970s album, all of this, intentional and unanticipated, has the power to turn the traditional listener into the interactive participant that these new media were always pimped out to be. You may, as I do, disagree with the decisions to put certain tracks on the official albums and leave others off. You may, as I do, consider "Thursday's Child" to be a weak song whose primary goal seems to be to make the strongest statement possible that we are no longer in the Outside-Earthling zone. So you may substitute "We All Go Through" at the start. You may be of the opinion that "Seven" is a weak song and eject it for "We Shall Go To Town". And the phony marketing separation is discarded, and the strength of Hours... is realized, as well as its continuity with Bowie's earlier 1990s albums.

Just an example. I find interesting integrations can be achieved with elements of Black Tie White Noise, The Buddha of Suburbia, and 1.0 Outside. Heathen and its abundant bonus tracks including the Toy remixes provide another sonic playground... Sure, I was doing this before reading Pegg's book, but it was Pegg's book that provided me with the David Bowie Stamp of Approval, an expansion of the cut-ups and rearrangements and juxtapositions of the pre-mass-computation era.

A gem not to be overlooked is Pegg's discussion of Heathen, the consensus selection for the crown jewel of the 1993-2003 "neo-classical Bowie" period. This section illustrates the ways that place affects the creative process and the ways it doesn't, both the grand scale of the recording studio in the midst of the largest city in the Americas and the relative solitude of the Catskills a few hours to the north, and on the shapes and sizes of the rooms used for creation within those places. It also brings Tony Visconti back, an important collaborator and influence that would continue until the end.

OK, it's a long book and it is a long review. There's much more in there, but start in the second half that connects the man with the music and the performance in a very rewarding way. To consider Pegg's book as something to grab when you want to check out a song here and there would be a waste.

The real deal for the true fan(atic)
By D. T. Douglas
If you consider yourself a true acolyte of all things Bowie, and require a complete reference and analysis on the major aspects of his career, this is for you.

You will never get tired of this book. It's about 2" thick and crammed with detailed histories and analyses of albums, songs, tours, filmography, and other things like art work and Internet info.

I've closely followed his entire career from early bands in London, all the way thru to his impeccably planned final exit. The world has lost a treasure, but he left us so many wonderful things, and this book is a trove of information and insights on them all.

Be warned: there are no pictures- this is not a coffee table book and it's not a biography. I believe most or all of the negative reviews came from people who did not understand this.

It's not a light read that you do cover-to-cover. It's more of an analytical reference book, so expect to read and use it in that mindset. That was clearly the author's intention, and this book fits that function perfectly. There are plenty of photo books and biographies on Bowie out there. This book fits a different niche, and does it impeccably - and down to the last detail. If you are a hardcore fan this is a "must have."

Also worth noting- the seller I used shipped the book very very quickly and it was perfectly packages. Much appreciated.

Incredible reference
By A. Miller
I'm the type of person who, when listening to music, takes a moment to search Wikipedia or Google to find out more information about it. What were the circumstances surrounding its release? How warmly was it received at the time? What kind of impact did it make on the artist's career?

If you're reading reviews of this book, then it's likely that you're similarly inquisitive. Luckily, I can assure you that this book is perfect for people like us.

As other reviews have stated, this is not a traditional biography. It is, however, a very, very comprehensive resource on practically all of Bowie's artistic output, and not just as a musician. The book is filled with quotes from people like Alomar, Visconti, Eno, and Bowie himself, both at the time of a work's release and also in retrospect. There's so much detail regarding Bowie's thematic intentions, how he approaches the recordings, and what he thinks of himself and his career, you come away from the book feeling as if you HAD just read a biography.

If you're thinking about it, I'd suggest just buying it. At this point, I'm not sure why I hesitated; it's been well worth the cost.

Solid State Chemistry and Its Applications, by Anthony R. West

The first broad account offering a non-mathematical, unified treatment of solid state chemistry. Describes synthetic methods, X-ray diffraction, principles of inorganic crystal structures, crystal chemistry and bonding in solids; phase diagrams of 1, 2 and 3 component systems; the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of solids; three groups of industrially important inorganic solids--glass, cement, and refractories; and certain aspects of organic solid state chemistry, including the ``organic metal'' of new materials.

An uneven treatment; a book from a ceramist's perspective
By Timothy Hughbanks
Where this book is good, it is very good. Where it is isn't, it is badly dated and incomplete. I suspect that the book's shortcomings stem from West's sole authorship - he just doesn't know much about a broad swath of this subject. A subject as broad and interdisciplinary as solid state chemistry demands a text written by at least two (but not more than three) knowledgeable solid state chemists. West needs a coauthor!

The good parts. Synthesis of bulk solids, particularly as applied to oxides. Interpretation of Phase diagrams & Ionic Conductivity and Solid Electrolytes - best treatments in any introductory text. Glasses & Cement and Concrete - not complete of course, but good introductions.

The adequate parts: Most of the material related to characterization of solids. Diffraction, spectroscopy, crystal symmetry, crystal defects, ionic bonding. Not terribly exciting treatment or imaginative in coverage, but adequate.

Completely dated - obsolete even when the book was first published: all subjects requiring a quantum-mechanical treatement, e.g., magnetism, electrical conductivity, all treatment of bonding other than ionic or hydrogen-bonded systems.

It was the best of books, it was the worst of books
By A Customer
Attending the University of Aberdeen from 1990-94, it was my pleasure to receive solid state chemistry lectures from the author, Professor West.
He was always very clear, concise, and helpful, if terribly busy.
The book was the magnum opus of the Inorganic Department, and was widely used throughout. It covers a very large range of topics, and is rather impressive for its clarity and breadth of information.
Despite the rather phenomenal expense, the book is well worth the price FOR THOSE involved in theoretical and practical applications of solid state chemistry. In my current work as a solid state research chemist, the book has proven an invaluable resource and without peer.
Highly recommended.

Exploring Expect: A Tcl-based Toolkit for Automating Interactive Programs (Nutshell Handbooks), by Don Libes

Expect is quickly becoming a part of every UNIX user's toolbox. It allows you to automate Telnet, FTP, passwd, rlogin, and hundreds of other applications that normally require human interaction. Using Expect to automate these applications will allow you to speed up tasks and, in many cases, solve new problems that you never would have even considered before. For example, you can use Expect to test interactive programs with no changes to their interfaces. Or wrap interactive programs with Motif-like front-ends to control applications by buttons, scrollbars, and other graphic elements with no recompilation of the original programs. You don't even need the source code! Expect works with remote applications, too. Use it to tie together Internet applications including Telnet, Archie, FTP, Gopher, and Mosaic.Don Libes is the creator of Expect as well as the author of this book. In Exploring Expect, he provides a comprehensive tutorial on all of Expect's features, allowing you to put it immediately to work on your problems. In a down-to-earth and humorous style, he provides numerous examples of challenging real-world applications and how they can be automated using Expect to save you time and money.Expect is the first of a new breed of programs based on Tcl, the Tool Command Language that is rocking the computer science community. This book provides an introduction to Tcl and describes how Expect applies Tcl's power to the new field of interaction automation. Whether your interest is in Expect or interaction automation or you simply want to learn about Tcl and see how it has been used in real software, you will find Exploring Expect a treasure trove of easy-to-understand and valuable information.

VERY well written-- must have for your Unix toolbox.
By RM
I've been using this book for over 13 years, and it's still current, still very useful. My only issue is that the author needs to port it to more languages. I'd love to see a Don Libes version of Expect not only for TCL, but for Ruby, Python, and even the new Go (from google).

THe best thing about expect is that instead of just firing off commands via shell script, it can interact with those commands. For example if you write a script that uses SSH, SSH can give you multiple different responses asking for passphrase, password, accept public key from server. Expect can work like a switch statement to handle all of these:

expect {
-re "\[P|p]assword" {
send "$passwd\r"
exp_continue
}
"Are you sure you want to continue connecting" {
send "yes\r"
}
-re "\[P|p]assphrase" {
send "$passphrase\r"
exp_continue
-re $prompt
}

Very simple.

Powerful tool, painful book
By Michael Ernest
I picked up Exploring Expect: A Tcl-based Toolkit for Automating Interactive Programs (Nutshell Handbooks) to get started on a regression-testing framework for common Unix programs. I was also very curious to see how Tcl was used to make this tool.

To those ends, I wasn't disappointed. Expect makes it possible to automate tedious interactive work at the interface level. One can write concise, if not elegant, scripts. The cost of brevity, as if often the case with tools of this sort, is directly proportional to one's ignorance of expect's features and how they are implemented. And, if you'd like to approach Tcl by way of example, expect is as good a choice as I've come across.

This guide, on the other hand, is often a discouraging chore to read. It's as if a shoebox of index cards, each detailing one specific feature, was sorted through and applied to flesh out the book's outline. Taken individually, these elements do make sense, providing sometimes useful examples, sometimes curious tangents, sometimes tedious cautionary tales of edge cases. Taken as a whole, it's difficult to see the forest for the trees in this guide. One could say this book is good reference material; it is indexed well, and the outline is clear enough. If it had a reference style, I could see that point.

The book however has an expository form. It employs inline cross-references and footnotes where a sidebar or a simple table would have been a welcome relief from flipping back and forth. These research-style choices enforce the idea that the book was assembled from notes, and never quite realized as a whole guide. As a result, it's closer in feel to a set of anecdotes than a reference guide. It is a style that, as an instructor, I find often discourages users, primarily beginners or others who do not have a formal technical education.

Expect is of course a valuable tool. I'm grateful to the author for making it and sharing it. I'm also surprised, however, that in the last 15 years no one has thought they could do a better job in explaining, and therefore promoting, such a useful application.

If You're Using Expect, You Need This
By Brian R. Neradt
I've worked with Expect pretty extensively, writing much test code with it and creating several helper scripts to make things easier. I assume here that you know what Expect is and have decided to use it, thus I'm reviewing the book and not the language.

Here's the short: In my experience if you'll be working with Expect, you pretty much need this book. Googling on the word Expect is useless (putting 'Gnu' in front of 'Expect' helps). Further, the two big keywords Expect adds are 'send' and 'expect'. That makes searching for help online tricky. Even with that aside, I simply find that there just isn't terribly much online to help you.

So you need this book. Others here point out that organizationally the book leaves some to be desired. I've felt that in the past as well. There have been many times where I knew I read something but haven't been able to figure out what section it would be in when I go back to find it. For this I dock a star for the book.

Still, I'm fairly happy with it as it has gotten me going many times.
