This history of American Public Health chronicles health perspectives of scavengers and public health workers to physicians and businessmen. It follows medicine as it evolved from bleeding victims and "miasmas" to technologically advanced medicine such as vaccines and x-rays. With a very good account of the history of infectious disease (yellow fever, and cholera), it aptly avoids the downfall of Whig history in assigning the fundamental reasons for the health initiatives. For a complete and concise history of American Public Health since the founding of the United States, read this book! It is an easy read for those who want general information, but is detailed enough (with great bibliographical information) for those interested in exploring any one aspect of the these issues further.

Accessible, Intelligent, Simple, and Useful- A Great Find

As a new Language Arts teacher, I am always looking for something that is relevant without being tedious or cumbersome. This workbook does just that. It is accessible, interesting, and covers the basics without worrying about nonsensical terminology that students will never actually use. The ideas presented are clear and concise in a way that it could easily be integrated into any academic unit as a way to teach, or even remind, students how to properly use the English language in a way that makes them sound intelligent without drowning them in rules and boring fluff. This is the kind of book that I look forward to using in my classroom simply because it's unlike any other I've yet come across. The grammar workbooks from my high school days weighed about 30 pounds, had about 500 pages, and seemed entirely foreign to me. This, however, gives students bite-size pieces that can easily be ingested and put into practice. What more could a teacher ask for?

A Good Reminder

I got this because I am On the Pathways BYU Idaho Online Program. And It is not required to have a book but since it had the option. So I figured why not get it. Totally worth it. I could always use a reminder on the basics. And I can do all I can with it while I Study. It's Smaller/ thiner than I expected, But IT has all the basics anyone needs to remember from language/reading.

Most people who need a grammar refresher have been inundated with stacks of data that buries their meager hopes for ever learning grammar. This workbook is to the point, and then with the exercises after the lessons, it is an ideal text for refresher grammar. What I love about this book is that it is doable, yet it covers all of the basics. Nicely done.

Look Past the Errors

I'll say a few things about the whole series here, and then a few things specifically about this first book.
First, Cassandra Gannon (and her sister, as well) is creative, and her stories are compelling. It's a blend of humor and melancholy, and some things work especially well. In this series, the characters have pretty much had their world destroyed--I would be surprised if a single one of them didn't have PTSD. I think Ms. Gannon could probably do more to emphasize just how tragic everything is (something she does well in #5), but I also really like the fact that she focuses on them moving on. Slowly but surely they're making new lives for themselves, and they're able to look at life with humor and with passion. I commend Ms. Gannon for that message.
But, fair warning for potential readers, while the stories are wonderful, the writing itself is a challenge to get through. Typos and grammatical errors are abundant (which is the reason that I'm giving this book 3 stars instead of 4 or 5). I urge readers to try and look past them, because the story itself is great, but I understand not being able to. A suggestion to Ms. Gannon would be to do more to edit her work, because having all those mistakes detracts from the potential her stories truly have.
About this novel in particular, I think it would make a good start to the series. I didn't actually read the series in order (4, 5, 2, 6, 3, 1) but I can't see a reason as to why "Warrior from the Shadowland" wouldn't make an excellent start. I like Cross, and I'm ambivalent about Nia, but they do make a good Phase-Match, and they work well together as characters. Most of the characters introduced become special unique snowflakes in later (or upcoming) novels, and I promise that the cliffhanger here leads to an awesome story. I will say that Ms. Gannon likes herself an insecure male lead--I feel like I shouldn't be so fond of people thinking so little of themselves, but it's such a nice change from cocky heroes that I just can't help myself. And really, I think it makes them adorable on top of the sexy that they already possess.
All in all, the writing does detract from the story, and I wouldn't be surprised if it turned people away. But if you can look past it, and I sincerely hope that you do, there's a great story and an even greater series underneath. I myself am eagerly waiting for the next book.

Great Story

I really enjoyed this book. The storyline is great. I thought the characters were all well developed. I gave it four stars instead of five due to the many typos and missing words. It would have been really frustrating if I hadn't enjoyed the story so much. If the story or characters had been weak I would have just stopped reading it and deleted it but I was hooked. I even bought the second one already. If you're thinking about reading this book you definitely should. It's worth it.

But I am glad I did! It was an entertaining and original story with strong characters. The story does jump around from character to character but instead of being fragmented it all comes together in complementary sub-plots that are intriguing not distracting. Definitely not a brooding (or boring) paranormal romance.

Yes, there were typos and a few mistakes. It was slightly distracting but the story compensated.

Interpretive Planning is a Profession

This is an excellent book for those who can't attend a course on interpretive planning, and probably equally useful for people writing strategy documents, business plans and other planning documents as well. The author has uncluttered what can at times be a confusing process, and simplified it so that the user can actually produce a viable plan for an interpretive center or similar facility without getting side-tracked. Interpretive Planning is well worth reading and having on hand as a reference book. I do recommend it.
