About the Author
For many years, Dr. Nichols was a visiting Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School and the Chief of Pelvic Surgery, Vincent Memorial Gynecologic Service, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Nichols returned to full time at Brown University and Women& Infants Hospital in January 1998. He is a fellow and member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, and a number of other professional organizations. He is a noted proponent of the vaginal approach to surgery and isalso known for his effective use of sacrospinous fixation in operative repair of the prolapsed vagina. His many contributions to the scientific literature include eight motion-picture films as well as a number of papers on sacrospinous fixation. Dr. Nichols is the author of Vaginal Surgery, 4e, 1996, published by Waverly and Reoperative Gynecologic and Obstetric Surgery, 2e, 1997, published by Mosby.

Dr. Clarke-Pearson is also a fellow and member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, The AmericanCollege of Surgeons, the Society of Pelvic Surgeons and other professional organizations. He is currently the chairman of the Committee on Gynecologic Oncology Practice. He is well known by his colleagues and is a frequent speakerat national and regional meetings and has published many articles and book chapters.

Critical but Uneven Manifesto on the Corporate Media

This is the newly updated version of Bagdikian's classic tome *The Media Monopoly* which first appeared in 1983 and was prescient enough to reach six editions by 2000. While dismissed as alarmism, with each edition of the book the problem of corporate media consolidation became worse, and now we are down to just five mega-conglomerates controlling almost all media content, and subsequently most political and social thought among the American public. Bagdikian is an expert commentator on the effects this has on popular democracy and social justice, and the problem has become so bad that it became necessary to create a completely revised text, rather than just a "new" edition of the old book with some tacked-on updates.
This powerful manifesto by Bagdikian sometimes suffers from a lack of focus. One frequent weakness is his tendency to opinionate on the social issues he uses as examples of poor mainstream media coverage. Examples include homelessness and smoking, in which Bagdikian forgets his analysis of media control issues and embarks on long expostulations of his own personal politics. A more general issue is his tendency to drift into political science as applied to modern corporate conservatism and crony capitalism. These are subjects in which Bagdikian is certainly proficient, and they are the root causes of the horrific state of American media. However, Bagdikian frequently drifts from useful media analysis to occasionally cranky political tirades that detract from the focus and power of the book's main points.
And even though this is a completely new edition, much of the text has still been copied verbatim from the old versions of the original book, leading to odd appearances of stories and examples from the 1960s and 70s, some of which have little modern relevance. The new chapter on the internet gives the impression that Bagdikian is barely familiar with that realm, as he gives remedial introductions to concepts that most of us are long familiar with. Other writers and analysts have now taken the issue of corporate media control and produced outstanding treatises that surpass Bagdikian's groundbreaking work (I especially recommend Robert W. McChesney). However, Bagdikian is still the originator and when he's focused, his insights into the social and political damage wrought by our corporate media are still powerful and prescient. The production of "public opinion" in the 21st century

Whoever wondered, like me, what happened to quality journalism, should read this book. After Reagan won the presidential election in 1980, conservatives began attacking the Fairness Doctrine. "The Fairness Doctrine required stations to devote a reasonable time to discussions of serious public issues and allowed equal time for opposing views to be heard." That seems like a pretty good definition of quality journalism to me. How can you ever imagine editors to defend a view contrary to their own professionalism? This is only possible in a world where media conglomerates grew so big that they don't like other big corporations being attacked. The author says : "Before newspapers and their conglomerates began buying broadcast stations, in 1969 when the Supreme Court ruled that the Fairness Doctrine was constitutional, the majority of newspapers editorialized in favour of the Fairness Doctrine. But by 1984, when newspapers had become part of the growing conglomerates that owned both newspapers and broadcast stations, those newspapers had reversed their positions and editorialized against the Fairness Doctrine. At least 84 percent of newspapers editorials then argued that the Fairness Doctrine should no longer be required."

When I was a small boy, I was still taught at school that the press is a warrant for our democracy. I suppose they don't teach that anymore. The free press doesn't exist any longer. The media are now part of the establishment. Five media conglomerates own the most newspapers, magazines, publishers, movie studio's and radio- and television channels, and the author calls those by their names : "These five conglomerates are Time Warner, by 2003 the largest media firm in the world; The Walt Disney Company; Murdoch's News Corporation, based in Australia; Viacom; and Bertelsmann, based in Germany. Today, none of the dominant media companies bother with dominance merely in a single medium. Their strategy has been to have major holdings in all the media, from newspapers to movie studios. This gives each of the five corporations and their leaders more communications power than was exercised by any despot or dictatorship in history".

Excellent and Informative

With "The New Media Monopoly", Ben Bagdikian delivers one of the best books on the modern state of the media ever written. He describes in fascinating detail the events that have surrounded the growth in the concentration of media ownership. Unlike some other texts covering the same topic, Bagdikian's writing is very readable and captivating. However, he does seem to provide more anecdotal evidence to support his observations than hard numbers. I would highly recommend accompanying this book with Robert McChesney's "The Global Media", which covers basically the same trends, but provides more hard data. McChesney also focuses more on the larger business dealings of media corporations that have lead to their consolidation rather than Bagdikian's typically smaller examples.

It is at once a Jewish book and a philosophical one: Jewish because it takes its material from the literary tradition that extends from the Bible to the rabbis to the great medieval philosophers; philosophical, because it studies that material in order to construct a worldview that is rational in the broadest sense of the term. This edition is designed for classroom use. It reprints a 1972 introduction by Leo Strauss and includes an essay on the work by Steven Schwarzschild. A new introduction by Kenneth R. Seeskin situates Cohen's masterwork in the history of modern philosophical and religious thought.

About the Author
Kenneth Seeskin received his BA from Northwestern University in 1968 and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1972. He joined the faculty of Northwestern in 1972 and has taught there ever since. He is the author of seven books and numerous articles, editor of The Cambridge Companion to Maimonides and co-editor of The Cambridge Guide to Jewish History, Culture, and Religion. In 2001, he won the Koret Jewish Book Award for Searching for a Distant God and, in 2011, the National Jewish Book Award for The Cambridge Guide to Jewish History, Culture, and Religion. In 2009, Seeskin was named Philip M. and Ethel Klutznick Professor of Jewish Civilization.

Leo Strauss (1899 1973) was one of the preeminent political philosophers of the twentieth century. He is the author of many books, among them "The Political Philosophy of Hobbes", " Natural Right and History", and "Spinoza s Critique of Religion", all published by the University of Chicago Press.

Best Book On Judaism

If you know absolutely nothing about Judaism, you will not get much out of this book. The best way to understand Judaism is to read Book Five of the TORAH a number of times, allowing yourself to forget any Christian preconceptions. Why, for instance, did the Chief Rabbi of Israel rule that a disruptive child should be removed from class, while the US Government considers such disruption a disability- that one aims at the long term welfare of the Jewish people as the measure of good and the other has some other value system in mind. If you can grasp the meaning of not taking the mother bird but taking the eggs or young, then you are at a point where you may be able able to understand what Cohen is talking about. My favorite notion of Cohen's in the book is his definition of Religion, that to qualify as a Religion, as opposed to a superstition I suppose, the system must be true. His concept of true is that of a scientist, not that of a priest. It is the exact opposite of the Catholic notion that the moral teachings of the Pope are TRUTH, as if TRUTH could come out of pronouncement. Cohen recognizes that truth stands or falls on its own, not by virtue of who stated it. It is not too surprising that Cohen during his lifetime went from Judaism to Hegel and back to Judaism. If one removed the State from Hegel and substituted the long term welfare of the Jewish people, Hegel could be Jewish. People who like comic book versions of books will not enjoy Religion of Reason. Torah should be the first thing understood, then RAMBAM ( Maimonides), especially M-TORAH), but Religion of Reason should be the third book or collection consulted. Maimonides says in M-Torah in the prohibition against gambling: A person (Jewish of course) should do nothing which neither increases his understanding nor contributes to the progress of civilization. To my knowledge, people who hate Jews will find no ammunition in Cohen's book. This book is for those who want really to understand, not for those who are looking for more justifications for anti-semitism. Those who are impressed by Jews' being seen either as pathetic, as in The Fixer, or as monsters, will not find their emotional longings satisfied by Cohen's masterpiece. I have only read it twice, so forgive me for missing something less casual readers may not miss. The book is
a translation from German. Any college or university library worthy of the name should have a copy of Religion of Reason. It is not hard reading. You can understand Religion of Religion even if you, like me, could not grasp Critique of Pure Reason, which Cohen does not touch upon. Just as Shopenhauer said that a person could not be a man unless he had read and understood Critique of Pure Reason, in today's world a person who does not understand Judaism has only a smattering of education. If you would understand, consult the books (or collections of books) in the order recommended and you will begin to understand the modern world. If, however, you are pre-disposed to anti-semitism, please read and understand Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" first.

Does what it says

It's a pretty simple product to review. It's listed as a coloring book and it absolutely IS a coloring book. There aren't any activities or stickers or anything but it doesn't advertise as such either. My daughter loves it (duh, it's Frozen). Anyway it's a good coloring book. Would buy again. I paid for this item. I was not paid to write a review but I always try and review any product I buy. This is my unbiased opinion. I have no motivation to write a positive or negative review because there is no compensation so this is a completely honest and organic review.

I should have read the reviews before purchasing this book. The picture lines are not black like normal coloring books so it is very hard to see the pictures. I do not like this at all. Not a good product.

It wasn't worth sending it back but I did not like it at all. The designs to color were so light blue that you could hardly see them to color. I only bought it because it was a "FROZEN" coloring book. I felt ripped off!!

Not a must have

This book is cute and I added my own notes. Since I spent $13, I have to use it. At this point, I can say, this little book doesn't deserve $13 but $8 or less. Other than few grammar and spelling errors, I didn't find any concept error and I have a masters in MPH Methodology. I was curious and the reason I bought it. I like his "Best of Luck on your exams", message...;)

101 Things Every Girl Should Know by Zonderkidz. This book is based on expert advice on stuff big and small from the Editors of Faithgirls and Girl's Life Magazine. I have to say that I wasn't sure if I was going to like the material in this book because I am very picky on what my girls are reading when it comes to advice for their lives. I was not disappointed with this book for a few reasons. The topics are very light and not heavy. They discuss simple things such as being nervous, taking better notes and how to handle a stressful week. It would have been nice if the book were more biblical based, it does not use versus from the Bible to make any points. Its a really simple, magazine style book with simple advice. The book has 102 tips for girls and I only didn't like a couple of them and it was mainly because of personal preference. I felt like the advice given was simple for example, being a good babysitter was mainly to pay attention to the children your watching instead of watching TV. I don't think that it was the best advice book out there but I think it was fun for my girls and was simple enough that I didn't have to worry about the world teaching my girls things I am not ready for them to learn yet.

I let my 14 year old daughter read through the book before I wrote my review and she thought the book was ok. She felt like a lot of the tips were not useful. She said she would give it only 3 stars out of 5. She did like the pictures and how the book was set up. She said it was fun to read even if the tips were not useful. It had recipes which she liked and some good tips such as how to stay safe.

My Review:
Growing up female by today's standards isn't always a good thing and to be perfectly honest it is definitely very difficult. Especially if you want your girl to be confident. This is such a tougher world than what many of us older women grew up in. Girls need to be under constant supervision as well as need many confidence builders throughout the course of their adolescence.

Faithgirlz editors have been there and know just the trick to help our girls feel more accepted and loved just like their Father feels they should be. They have put together a book that gives them just a small piece of advice on just about any subject. It is well formatted and it has just small tidbits, so its not an overwhelming book by any means.

With little pieces of advice such as ordering healthy when eating out and becoming more independent our girls will be on their way to a better overall sense of self in no time. And that's not all there is a quiz in the back of the book, who doesn't like quizzes?

The book is very ascetically appealing,the pages are colorful,and every pages has ton of photos,the words are very relatable and easy to read,which is perfect for young girls.I love how every page has photos,of what I’m going to assume are real teenage girls,and they are putting the words into action,so if its talking about what to do on a rainy day,there are girls doing said activities.This book is a great confidence builder for preteens and teens,i love how it covers a large variety of topics.Its great that they even included recipes,but there not really age appropriate,since no kid is likely to have the patience to wait over an hour for a chicken/cake to cook and cool,they should have included recipes that were easy,short and sweet,or at least 30 minutes or less cook time.I love that they included a lot of school related things because kids this age can easily loose focus and interest in school,they also often times loose confidence in themselves and there school work.One thing about number 38,before I read it I though,oh no there not really going to tell kids how to talk there parents into stuff,but yes they did,although it wasn’t as bad as I thought,it is just basically telling them if they behave all the time and get all there school work done,when it comes time,and they really want something,parents are more likely to be lenient.The book mentions health and health choices a lot,which in a way is super good,since obesity is at an all time high,but I feel like it pushes it to much and in to many spots,kids this age are especially hard on themselves about looks,and the pressure to be thin at this age is high,and I feel like some teens,may feel extra pressure by this advice,or misinterpret it,bottom line I feel like it harps on health a little to much,fewer more gentler reminders are better.I did enjoy seeing that this book gives advice about all things,things major and minor,some stuff all girls go through,such as how to talk to boys,making friends,acne,etc,many of these things kids often feeling like they can’t go to there parents about,so its good for them to have another healthy outlet.I reading all this great advice and and then I get to number 54,I’m super thrown off,I am not sure why teens need advice about learning to do a split,it feels like they just threw this one in there,although 56 sounds fun,i myself would like to try making those lip balms,love that there all natural too.I did find what I believe is an error,on the section stuff to do on a rainy day number 7 out of 10 “its an ideal time,for giving yourself a little lesson in… whatever you’re been meaning to learn” this in fact should be “whatever you’ve been meaning to learn.I would recommend this book to everyone,of all ages,especially those with kids,preteens,or teens.I received this book for free,for review purposes,all thoughts and or opinions are my own and I was not compensated.
