About the Author
Reuel B. Parker has spent a lifetime building, repairing, restoring, designing, and cruising in sail- and powerboats. Author of The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding (International Marine, 1990) and of numerous articles for WoodenBoat and Boatbuilder magazines, he has been a devotee of sharpies since his childhood on the shores of Long Island Sound. He is currently putting the finishing touches on a 60-foot Virginia pilot schooner; he plans to move his design business aboard and go cruising.

A niche book, covering its subject completely, although it is not a big thick book. Glad to have purchased it and glad that it was written. Lots of detail about sharpie sailboat construction, design, history, and amusing anecdotes. A good gift for the boatbuilder or boat designer. Just ask Bruce Kirby (Laser).

Required reading if thinking about building a sharpie

Good book. Got a little technical in places and could have used illustrations to clarify verbiage; however I would concise it required reading if one is planning on building a sharpie.... Even if you are not using Parker's plans.

Great background for boatbuilding

I think the kernal of this book is the description of why plywood is a superior boat building material. (diagonal strength) I had been thinking of carvel planking as the best type of wood construction. I was wrong. Other than that, the book does a great job of describing the history of, and reason for, sharpies.

From what I read, I decided that a deeper, heavier, and stronger boat might be more appropriate for the inside passage to Alaska. Also, I'm just not short enough to spend much time in the cabin of a sharpie.

Good book, good read, and I will be buying the Ruel Parker book on cold molding.

About the Author
William J. Palm III�a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics�at the�University of Rhode Island, he helped develop an educational program of introduction to engineering based on MATLAB.�He is the author of several books, including the System dynamics, published by McGraw-Hill and Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Dynamic Systems and Mechanical Vibration, both published by�John Wiley.

Yunus A. Cengel is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. His areas of interest are renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy policies, heat transfer enhancement, and engineering education. He served as the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) at the University of Nevada, Reno, from 1996 to 2000. He has led teams of engineering students to numerous manufacturing facilities in Northern Nevada and California to perform industrial assessments, and has prepared energy conservation, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement reports for them. He has also served as an advisor for various government organizations and corporations.

Dr. Cengel is also the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, and Introduction to Thermodynamics, all published by McGraw-Hill Education. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French.

Dr. Cengel is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award for excellence in authorship in 1992 and again in 2000. Dr. Cengel is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada, and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

Unimpressed.

This book was just about useless to me. Quite frequently, the answers to the problems within chapters are incorrect. Some of the figures are also incorrect. There are many spelling and grammatical errors, and seemed all around unintelligent. It does not explain the material well, and what it does explain is not enough to do the problems in the book. Normally, I rely on my textbooks to understand material that I didn't grasp during lecture, but this book didn't help a bit. My professor has actually apologized for requiring us to buy this book.

It says there is less math "jargon" and there is... it explains topics in plain English. The only problem is math is not plain English and sometimes needs to be explained in depth. I found that I cannot do many of the problems at the end of the chapter based on the information given in the text. I've had to seek further help with Shaum's Outlines which explains the topics 10X better. Since this is a first edition book, there is also little help online for the problems given and no solutions manual to help get you through.

Not Enthusiastic

Differential equations to me is very abstract, and there are not enough simplified, well explained examples. This book definitely assumes you have a complete, profound knowledge of Calculus I & II. In a nutshell, I feel like this is a condensed, abbreviated text. Oh, and the one thing that bugs me the most, no solutions to problems in the back. Get friendly with Wolfram Alpha.

About the Author
Casey Tygrett (DMin, Lincoln Christian Seminary) is a pastor, blogger, adjunct seminary professor, and spiritual director who serves as the lead teaching pastor at Heartland Community Church in Rockford, Illinois. He was previously pastor of spiritual formation at Parkview Christian Church in Orland Park, Illinois, and has taught at Lincoln Christian University and Seminary and Emmanuel Christian Seminary. He is the author of The Jesus Rhythm, and has written for The Christian Standard, TheOoze.com, and the Apprentice Institute blog.

James Bryan Smith (MDiv, Yale University Divinity School, DMin, Fuller Seminary) is a theology professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and a writer and speaker in the area of Christian spiritual formation. He also serves as the director of the Apprentice Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation at Friends University. A founding member of Richard J. Foster's spiritual renewal ministry, Renovaré, Smith is an ordained United Methodist Church minister and has served in various capacities in local churches. Casey Tygrett's book invites us into the joy and security of being free and encouraged to ask questions of our faith. It is refreshing to know you do not have to have all the answers and that God actually encourages us to seek Him at a deeper level, Using personal stories, thoughtful references from many strong Christian authors, and searching questions at the end of each chapter, Casey keeps you engaged and challenged to delve deeper into your faith. This is a great book for Christians at all levels of their faith.

I received a digital copy of the book from the publisher for review.

What an important book! How refreshing to be given permission, even welcomed, to ask questions about life and faith without judgement. This is just what the Christian culture needs.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a "question journal" and happy for the opportunity to travel along the questioning path using the helpful prompts at the end of each chapter.

Tygrett's gentle curiosity opens wide the door to those of us who have small or significant doubts about matters of faith, and lets us know we aren't alone and that it's okay and even normal to question.

For all the curious poking and prodding at major faith concepts in the book, I'm left feeling more grounded and secure at the end of it.

About the Author

MARK AYERS is manager of RF Engineering at GCI Communications Corp headquartered in Anchorage, Alaska. He has a broad range of telecommunications experience in fiber optics, microwave radio, and satellite network design. Mr. Ayers holds a BS degree in mathematics from the University of Alaska Anchorage and an MS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He is a registered Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Alaska, a senior member in the IEEE, and teaches a variety of courses in the Engineering Department at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

84, Charing Cross Road is a charming record of bibliophilia, cultural difference, and imaginative sympathy. For 20 years, an outspoken New York writer and a rather more restrained London bookseller carried on an increasingly touching correspondence. In her first letter to Marks & Co., Helene Hanff encloses a wish list, but warns, "The phrase 'antiquarian booksellers' scares me somewhat, as I equate 'antique' with expensive." Twenty days later, on October 25, 1949, a correspondent identified only as FPD let Hanff know that works by Hazlitt and Robert Louis Stevenson would be coming under separate cover. When they arrive, Hanff is ecstatic--but unsure she'll ever conquer "bilingual arithmetic." By early December 1949, Hanff is suddenly worried that the six-pound ham she's sent off to augment British rations will arrive in a kosher office. But only when FPD turns out to have an actual name, Frank Doel, does the real fun begin.

Two years later, Hanff is outraged that Marks & Co. has dared to send an abridged Pepys diary. "i enclose two limp singles, i will make do with this thing till you find me a real Pepys. THEN i will rip up this ersatz book, page by page, AND WRAP THINGS IN IT." Nonetheless, her postscript asks whether they want fresh or powdered eggs for Christmas. Soon they're sharing news of Frank's family and Hanff's career. No doubt their letters would have continued, but in 1969, the firm's secretary informed her that Frank Doel had died. In the collection's penultimate entry, Helene Hanff urges a tourist friend, "If you happen to pass by 84, Charing Cross Road, kiss it for me. I owe it so much."

This is a terrible edition

This is a terrible edition. I opened the book up to see that "a very bad cess" in the April 10, 1950 letter had been changed to "a very bad success." A bad cess is an Irish curse. I wanted this book for a gift but I'll just be putting it in the Good Will bag.

beautiful book, but be wary of which edition you get

This is a quick, amazing read about a writer and her favorite English bookshop. But make sure you get an older edition, like maybe the 1990 Penguin paperback.

Somehow I ended up with a version that Amazon said was 2013 from Important Books (the copy I actually received says 2014 Stellar Books). This edition has a cheap, sloppy feel. The formatting is awful, there are text errors, and the cover is an overly enlarged version of the image file from Wikipedia's 84, Charing Cross Road page. Seriously. It even has the same small, brown stain in the artwork.

Please, please do yourself a favor and find a professionally printed version of this great book.

Mail-order romance before "You've Got Mail"

What's not to love about this book? Easy to read, no complicated, or stage-crafted, Hollywood infused drama. This is a lovely story (and trust me - I'm a man that NEVER uses the word "lovely" to describe things) about a woman from the Bronx and her transatlantic dalliance with a staid London bookseller. The story is told over changing decades from the aftermath of WWII to the late 70's. Helene Hanff is both the author and subject of this book. The book's title refers to the bookstore's address in London. The story is about her life as a script reader, her love for rare and out of print books, and the bookseller (Frank Doel)who goes to great lengths to find those books for her. Her ability to write about daily events makes you see and feel the changes that are occurring in America while Europe struggles to rebuild. Before "You've Got Mail", "When Harry Met Sally", or even "The Notebook" - people would sometimes meet as penpals and could be charmed by one another's kindnesses. There are no flashes of nudity here, no sordid details of extramarital affairs (Frank is married, with children). Instead, you'll find two people who become friends through the mail and still respect one another in the morning. A great read!
