It’s that good. Labyrinth Lost revolves around Alex

I bought Labyrinth Lost on Kindle and 20% into the book, I ordered a hardback copy. It’s that good.

Labyrinth Lost revolves around Alex, a bruja living in Brooklyn with her mother and two sisters who also have magical abilities. The problem is that Alex doesn’t want to be a bruja and on the day she’s supposed to receive her blessing from her ancestors, she tries to wish her powers away- and ends up exiling her family to Los Lagos. Realizing her mistake, she sets out to bring them back but runs into a dark and sinister force in this other realm.

When this book first came out, I saw it everywhere. Twitter, tumblr, blogs… I could not escape this beautiful cover. I decided to wait and give it a few weeks to let the hype settle down before I read it because I feel like a lot of times we get swept up in other people’s exuberance for a book and miss the experience for ourselves. What I realized was that the hype around this book isn’t actually hype- it’s just that good.

The plot is strong and the pacing flows. There were several parts where the author could have bogged us down with details and chose not to which kept the plot pushing forward. I’ve seen reviews where people are criticizing the handful of answered questions we were left with and that cliffhanger ending, but hello! Sequel!

I loved all of the characters and I think the author did a pretty good job on hashing out their personalities… except for one character and it was almost enough for me to drop a star from the rating. Alex has two love interests in this story- Nova and Rishi. Nova is fleshed out and given an entire backstory and has a very strong personality. Rishi, on the other hand, we don’t get much about her besides the fact that she likes Alex and she jumped into a portal. That’s it. I can give you all sorts of facts about Nova but really nothing about Rishi. Which was terribly disappointing to me. I felt like I was forced to want Alex to go for Nova because I know all these things about him. Rishi felt very bland and dry and I really didn’t care if anything happened between her and Alex. And this is coming from someone who generally always prefer f/f ships to m/f ships.

There is also PROPER BISEXUAL REPRESENTATION in this book. None of this “half gay” stuff or “gay for you” or “straight for you”. PROPER. BISEXUAL. REPRESENTATION. Let that sink in.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes magical girls, magical boys, sarcasm, and ancestors being sassy.

so I just had to give this one a shot and I'm so glad that I did

I'm not normally one for witch stories, but these are brujas. I have to admit that I don't see a lot out there that mix magical realism with Latinx characters, so I just had to give this one a shot and I'm so glad that I did. The reviews of several other book bloggers, particularly diverse book bloggers may have helped too.
That blurb doesn't really begin to tell the reader the half of it. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect spoilers in the blurb, but simply saying that she hates magic is a little off, in my opinion. She hates magic in that Elsa from Frozen kind of way. She's not ridding herself of a measly amount of power that isn't all that useful anyway or some part of herself that she doesn't feel like she identifies with. She's ridding herself of the dangerous power that she feels overwhelming her ability to control it and out of fear of what might happen were she to lose control. Sure, there are some other reasons in there and they are perfectly understandable 'I wanna be a normal girl' reasons, but I feel like those would have been manageable if not under the colossal weight of her power.

The setup is done well and I felt like I had a good grasp of the characters and where everyone stood when the plot took off. Then there's Los Lagos and the insanity ensues. I enjoyed the darkness of it. Rather than Wonderland, which is what the back cover uses, I found Los Lagos reminded me of Oz. There is an order to things, no matter how unsettling they are and the inhabitants know what that order is. Moreover, each one is just trying to do the best they can within their circumstances in much the same way as the inhabitants of Oz. they have their own motivations that are not tied to our protagonist which makes them a bit unpredictable to her and to the reader.

The worlds that stories take place in are one of my favorite parts of reading, it's why I tend to lean toward paranormal and science fiction and one of the things that's been a new joy to historical fiction. I loved the world building of this book. It's not just Los Lagos but also the world building to create this community of brujas and integrate them into Brooklyn. It's beautifully done.

Okay magic.

Let me give you some back story. I am a huge Charmed fan. HUGE. I’ve seen the episodes live, seen the repeats on TNT, paid $300 for the Book of Shadows DVD set, and now I binge watch once a year on Netflix. I love this damn show. So, you can imagine my glee when I saw Adam Silvera (sadist who wrote More Happy Than Not) recommend Labyrinth Lost for Charmed fans. You don’t have to tell me twice.

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova is like Charmed in some ways, especially the familial aspect, but in others, it’s worlds removed. This book is a magical adventure that’s filled with enchantment and whimsy, and those who love witches, spells, and being thrown into a supernatural world will appreciate this book. But, beware of a late book lull, as the thrill tapers off, and distraction finds you.

The beginning third of this novel is my favorite, since I went into this read with the Charmed mentality. It features Alejandra, a young witch who is ready to reject her magic, her charming sisters who have embraced their magic, and her mom and extended family who are excited to lead Alex on her journey as a bruja. Also, there’s Rishi, Alex’s best friend who clearly loves and worships her, and Nova, a cute boy who warns Alex to be careful with the powers she plans to reject. The first third takes place in our familiar world, and the events are the prequel to the events mentioned in the synopsis.

See, I didn’t read the synopsis, so I was excited to read a book about sisters navigating their magic in our reality as they attempt to find their place in both worlds. That theme is touched upon a bit with Alex’s angst over accepting her magic, and the competitive, love/hate dynamic that all sisters have, but after ‘the event’ those storylines got tossed aside.

Labyrith Lost then becomes a quest book, in which Alex and Nova (and some surprise visitors) must trek across Los Lagos to save her family and bring them back home. It’s a bit like Oz but with a moderately trippy world compared to Wonderland. At first, the journey is thrilling and intriguing, as Alex and Nova encounter magic beyond their imaginings, and face dangerous trials together. Then, it all starts to feel safe and predictable, Alex’s journey to self-acceptance.

Labyrinth Lost never quite reaches a level of intensity where as a reader you feel you’re about to go off a ledge, and that prevents it from being an outstanding read. There are a few twists at the end that pull you back into the story, but then it ends and you’re left wondering if you want to keep reading about these brujas in future books.

Maybe. I mean, I’m happy with it and I enjoyed reading it this last week, though it wasn’t as gripping as I’d hoped it would be. I wouldn’t recommend this for a die-hard Charmed lover, I’d recommend this for someone who likes the style of witchcraft featured in, hmm…Buffy.

a terrific read

This is one book I just can't put down. I fell into the Banshees quite by accident in 1984, having discovered them via their connections to the Cure's Robert Smith. Hyaena was my first purchase, and although I felt like something of a "Johnny-Come Lately" fan I have followed them ever since. This great book tells the warts and all story of the band, from their chaotic, what-a-shambles beginings through their many trials and tribulations, to their ultimate break-up and unfortunate reunion. For fans this is a MUST. If, like me, you have always assumed that Sioux's last name is Dallion, as is it spelled in many alternative rock source guide books, then you will learn that it's actually Ballion. And that's just the begining.

Didn't Totally Love it

I have loved Siouxsie and the Banshees since discovering them in high school, so of course I was eager to read this book when I heard it was coming out. After reading it, I have to say that it wasn't as enjoyable as I thought it would be. The reason for my discontent lies in the fact that, maybe unlike a lot of fans, I am less interested in reading about the making of the music, i.e. the mechanics of the songwriting, which instruments they used, which producers, etc, than I am in reading about their lives as people, their personalities, their likes and dislikes, their personal lives, what drove them to become who they are, stuff like that. This book contained a little of that in the early chapters discussing the Banshees' biographical information and a little later on, but most of the rest of the book contained lots and lots of info on stuff that I found I didn't really care about. It is not that I am completely disinterested in the nuts and bolts of the music, all the moving around, and all the shows they played, but I found that after I finished the book (and I had to push myself to keep reading as I regularly found myself lost in trying to remember which producer was which and so on), I felt that I didn't really "know" Siouxsie any better than I did at the beginning. To me, she has always represented the ultimate punk ice queen, visually stunning yet unapproachable, unattainable, and, yes, cold. Even as a fan, I always felt that she was someone that I could not really relate to although I thought her musical output was genius and I admired her. I was hoping this book would change my mind about that and paint a more complete picture of who she is, but it didn't really (basically, I'm saying that I always hoped that she would turn out to be more than the super haughty b@#$% she always made sure we believed she was). I wanted more about her, less about the band, and I didn't care for the "oral history" writing style with the snippets from interviews pasted together. The pictures also left a lot to be desired.

Hard to put down - If you're a Siouxsie fan - GET THIS BOOK

I bought this book and couldn't put it down! This is one of the best books out there about Siouxsie and the Banshees! These are interviews with Siouxsie along with members of the band and other important figures. They (Siouxsie and others) tell the stories about the band's history, the songs/albums, etc. If you're a Siouxsie fan - you have to get this book! Another good book for a Siouxsie fan (and its hard to get) is Ray Stevenson's Siouxsie and the Banshees Photo Book. Get this book and the Photo book!

About the Author

Scott M. Lynch is a professor in the Department of Sociology and Office of Population Research at Princeton University.� His substantive research interests are in changes in racial and socioeconomic inequalities in health and mortality across age and time, as well as in understanding the sources of regional disparities in health in the U.S.� His methodological interests are in the application of Bayesian statistics and estimation methods to problems that cannot be easily addressed with classical statistical methods in sociology and demography.

An oldie but goodie

This was my text decades ago. I bought a copy solely for the illustrations which are as good as I remembered them. The text is, obviously, thoroughly outdated, but a good drawing has a timeless quality.

Old, but still essential.

Like the previous reviewer, I first encountered this book several decades ago. As a freshman major in geology I saw this book in the campus bookstore and bought it thinking I'd use it as a textbook the following year. The next year the text was changed to the classic by Thornbury. However I found Lobeck to be invaluable for the encyclopedic coverage, vivid descriptions, and classic illustrations.

Fast forward to 2010 and I find myself teaching geomorphology. Emphasis has changed through the years from classic description of landscapes (Physiography) to emphasis on processes.

This change has resulted in texts that emphasize an understanding (frequently shallow) of process with insufficient description of the geomorphic feature whose formation is supposedly being explained. Understanding of processes still requires proper description of the products of those processes and I find myself referring back to classics such as Thornbury, Cotton, and especially Lobeck. The master of description and illustration is still the master.

The Case Of The High Seas Secret

I really liked this book. I have all the other ones of this series and this was just as good as them all. Mary-Kate and Ashley are on a cruise with their family and take part in the scavenger hunt, they have to find three clues. With each clue is an object to prove they have got the clue, but then the objects start disappearing, can Mary-Kate and Ashley solve this mystery? Of course they can. I higly recommend it!

This is the first comprehensive book covering the topic of materials science and its relationship to electrodeposition. It demonstrates how the principles of materials science can be used to explain various structures of electrodeposits and how these structures influence properties. Although the title sounds specific to electrodeposition, other coating technologies such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, plasma spraying and ion implantation are also covered. The reason for this is that growth of coatings and their performance from a materials science viewpoint have a great deal of commonality regardless of the technique used to deposit the film. The fascinating field of electrodeposition allows one to "tailor" the surface properties of a bulk material or, in the case of electroforming, the entire part. Deposits can be produced to meet a variety of demands of the designer. For this reason and for the possibilities that exist in terms of "new materials" for a variety of applications, a thorough understanding of materials science and principles is of the utmost importance. This book is intended to provide some of that understanding. The sequence of chapters in the book takes the reader from the substrate to the outer surface of the coating. It starts with the substrate (Hydrogen Embrittlement), then proceeds to the substrate/coating interface (Adhesion, Diffusion), then the bulk of the coating (Structure, Properties, Additives, Stress, Porosity) and finally to the environmental interface of the coating (Corrosion, Wear).

Excellene Practical Book

This is a really good book to learn about the various tests for electrodeposition. The book is succintly written and very practical in application. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is new to electrodeposition and is interested in doing electrodeposition as a part of their research or in a industry. This book is very useful to me since i am trying to understand the mechanical properties in relation to the microstructure during electrodeposition.

Excellent. There have been a number of books on specific modelling subjects but fewer general books on the subject. This book by Chris Ellis was first published in 2005 and was a sell-out; so, now we have the second edition. The author has many years of practical modelling experience under his belt and is a very experienced writer as well as editing his own magazine. The revised edition includes new additions to the Hornby range, including new rolling stock. The book is Hornby specific in that examples used are from the Hornby range but most of the information it contains applies to products of other manufacturers too. The appendix lists magazines that might be helpful and details the Hornby Collectors' Club and the Hornby Virtual Railway Mk2 DVD. There is also a large index. About the Author

Chris Ellis has been a steam and model railway enthusiast since his school days. He has nearly fifty years of experience as a writer and editor, having started out in the early 1960s as editor of Airfix Magazine. In 1980 he founded Model Trains, which he continues to edit today as Model Trains International. Chris Ellis has also written numerous railway and scenic modelling books along with articles on miltary, aviation and transport subjects.

All aboard! So my pros I have to figure where to start, so here is a list:
1. The second edition paperback is printed on high quality gloss paper.
2. The cover is heavy duty and looks great.
3. The pictures are crisp and clear.
4. The illustrations are sharp
5. Even though I have been a train and model train buff since I was a child I still learned some things the very first time I picked it up to read, ie. the scale and gauge section was extremely informative
6. Well written by Chris Ellis and forward by James May
7. The book is 175 pages and contents include: Forward; Introduction; Before you begin; The Horby Range; Building a layout; Scenics and Stuctures; Locomotives and rolling stock; Control and operation; Practical layouts; Appendix; and Index.
8. The book is a great escape
Cons:
1. The book makes me miss Great Britian and especially Scotland even more than I usually do.
2. The book makes to want to buy more OO Horby and Oxford Diecast goodies.

Evan Goer is a Senior Technical Writer at Yahoo! in Sunnyvale, CA, where he works for an engineering team that develops Yahoo's internal deployment infrastructure. He also works closely with the YUI core engineering team. Before that, Evan worked for startups and corporate behemoths alike, documenting everything from how to speed up applications on big iron Sun hardware to how to treat cancer patients with electron beam radiation therapy.

Evan is a Sunnyvale native and holds a Bachelor's of Science in Physics from Harvey Mudd College. He is on an eternal quest for the perfect documentation format and build system.

Fantastic resource for both beginners and seasoned YUI 3 devs

Even though it's been around for a few years now, there are surprisingly few books about YUI 3. Until now, the best way to learn the library was to dive in and refer to the official documentation or third-party blog posts and tutorials, and the best way to gain advanced knowledge of the library's inner workings and design patterns was to read the source code. Not anymore!

The YUI 3 Cookbook is organized as a collection of standalone solutions for a wide variety of common tasks, and does a fantastic job of introducing the important concepts and best practices of YUI 3 in a way that beginners will easily understand. Each chapter presents a series of problems or tasks, code that solves the problems or completes the tasks, and detailed discussions of how the code works and what's going on behind the scenes.

Beginners will find the wide variety of ready-to-use recipes and clear examples useful as they learn how to do things with the library, and experts will find the detailed discussions illuminating since they often cover best practices and the reasons behind YUI 3's patterns and architecture.

Evan Goer writes with clarity and wit, keeping things interesting even in the longer recipes. The example code is both easy to understand and technically accurate (Evan worked directly with the YUI team while writing the book), and even some of the library's newest features like the App Framework are covered. Recipes range from simple DOM manipulation and UI effects to Ajax to full-blown widgets and MVC apps.

The bottom line: if you use YUI 3, or even if you're just curious about it, you need this book.

You will be a better web developer after reading this book!

I am a pretty avid YUI user - having worked at Yahoo! for many years and I've been following the evolution of YUI from an internal javascript library to a mature, fast, and reliable framework that it is today. While the online documentation is very good, it often leaves creating examples of specific features as an exercise for the reader. I don't know about you, but I learn things much faster by simple example than by pouring over potentially convoluted documentation. This book fulfills that need quite nicely! Not just for YUI purists, this book is an excellent way to get up to speed on YUI by DOING rather and just READING. You can use every example in the book, and try them out on your own to see how they are constructed. There are a broad range of things like creating lightboxes to managing history and the browser back button that you probably never knew you could do with YUI! It also is a great way to learn about the overarching ideas behind YUI, and why it may be a great library to graduate to once you've gone beyond just making buttons change on hover, or you are tired of struggling with conflicting plugins. I don't "bookmark" many books with post-its, but there are so many handy things in this book, that I've already marked several recipes that have made my YUI development experience much better.
Even if you have never tried YUI before, you can learn a lot about web development here through the recipes. Chapters like Infrastructure can help you learn to build your own web apps without having to go through lots of complicated trial and error.
Needless to say, I whole heartedly recommend this book.

It's what a recipe book should be

I am pretty much a n00b with YUI3. I dabble with it when I want to add some slick elements to my web pages without a lot of fuss. I'm not a huge JavaScript guy who ponders closures and how to implement the latest hotness in NodeJS.

This book is perfect for me. It just tells me what I want to know accurately, and in a straightforward way. It also doesn't assume I'm already an expert on the subject. This book is also concise enough that an expert would probably find it useful as well.

One trap I see authors of these sorts of books fall into is building the *huge* example program. They introduce concept after concept integrating everything into one monster program with all sorts of cruft to make the thing work. Not so with this book. The YUI 3 Cookbook instead gives you digestible discreet examples that stand on their own. It illustrates the item in question without requiring the reader to excavate it from a huge mountain of stuff I'm not interested in. Most of the examples in this cookbook fit into a single page which makes deciphering the code much easier.

I wish more technical books were written like this one.

Courageous

When I first read this book, I couldn't put it down. It was definitely a page-turner. The book has many plots going on.

There were times when I cried and other times when I felt very angry about the injustice and discrimination Amina and the other characters faced in the story.

The book raises awareness on fraud, child abuse and discrimination against women.

One of the things I learned from this book was the importance of education and how it can affect our society.

An Excellent Read.

I found this non-fictional account intriguing and quite eye-opener. In summary, it is very hard to put down, brilliantly written and I am very keen to read more by this author.
