Good Primer for Understanding Six Sigma
By Krystal Porter
If you are looking to get a big picture view of what Six Sigma is and how you can utilize it in your workplace this is a great read. This is a quick read at only 85 pages and is written in a way that anyone can understand. If you are already familiar with Six Sigma you will most likely be disappointed with this book as it is a VERY broad overview of Six Sigma. However, if you are looking to get buy-in from your organization or company, this is a great book to recommend to leadership and even those that would be participating on DMAIC teams.

Good introduction if you know nothing about Six Sigma
By Benjamin Rossen
I had heard often of Six Sigma, but knew next to nothing about it (and suspected an overdose of trendy nonsense because of the silly sounding terms borrowed from karate). This slim volume seemed the right starting place, since I did not wish to invest in a tome of material if Six Sigma turned out to uninteresting for my company.
This is, indeed, an excellent overview. It tells in global terms what to expect. The statistical methods are described in non-mathematicians' intuitive terms (a pity, I would have liked a little more detail) but for my needs it served it purpose admirably.
As a result of reading this book I am moving on to a more technical account of Six Sigma. I need to know what the operational definitions are and how the statistics are used. I am not yet certain if Six Sigma is suitable - in software development we have established methods for tracking bugs and improving interface usability. Nevertheless, my interest has been whetted.

If It Smells and Tastes Like a Duck....
By A Customer
When my company decided to buy into the Six Sigma program, our smiling managers told us in numerous town hall meetings that Six Sigma isn't just "another flavor of the month" -- that is, the latest magic bullet being sought by managers who seem always to want someone else to solve their problems and tell them exactly how to manage their businesses.
So naturally, on the very first page of "What is Six Sigma?," we see the question, is Six Sigma "a new flavor of the month program?"
That makes a total of seven times in three weeks that I've been carefully told that Six Sigma isn't just another flavor of the month. (I started keeping count after hearing it three times.)
Which says to me, quite clearly, that Six Sigma is just another of these flavor-of-the-month programs, the main result likely being layoffs in order to cut costs.
Plus, we've seen four presentations from one of the Six Sigma super-duper black belts -- pretty much the same presentation each time, this person bragging again and again about how she helped some apartment manager collect his rent three days earlier. Our management has already bought the product. Everyone is puzzled why we continue getting nothing but sales pitches.
