Public and political attention has been focused in recent years on improving the quality of public education. A quality teaching force is central to achieving this goal. "Efforts to improve teacher quality and to advance the professionalization of teaching have focused on the development of standards and increased testing for certification. In fact, furthering the professionalization of teaching is one of the most important movements in teaching in the last half-century.

Our primary goal in writing this fourth edition has been to provide current and useful information that will help those interested in careers in elementary and secondary education develop an understanding of the philosophical and historical roots of education, current educational structures and practices, and projections for the future. With this understanding they can make informed decisions about their professional and career goals. There is general agreement about the need for able persons in education; however, the decision to become a teacher should come only after careful deliberation. Before making the decision to enter teaching, individuals need to understand the complexities of the teacher's role, the many and diverse duties and responsibilities of the profession, and the commitment of time and energy required to be a successful teacher.

ORIENTATION OF THE TEXT

To help the student develop an understanding of education, this book follows a sequenced presentation of major topics: the status of the teaching profession and efforts to increase the professionalization of teaching; the philosophical foundations and historical background of education; the relationship between schools and society; educational responses to an increasingly diverse and multicultural society; the particular challenges of working with diverse populations and at-risk youth; the law and its effect on teachers and students; the organization and financing of elementary and secondary schools; the current and evolving process of teaching and learning; and projected demographic, social, technological, and organizational and governance changes and their impact on education. In this interdisciplinary approach we explore both the theoretical and the applied aspects of education. We have prepared a text that includes a balance of past, present, and future applications in a context that students will find both readable and challenging.

Interdisciplinary Emphasis

One of the strengths of the text is the extensive use of relevant concepts from the social sciences. The philosophical roots of education are identified and discussed. Historical materials were used in developing the extensive discussion of the evolution of schooling for the past several centuries. Disciplines such as sociology, economics, politics of education, political science, public administration, finance, and law have been used to provide an understanding of the current and developing context of education. Research from the field of psychology is used extensively in the discussion of teaching, learning, and meeting the needs of at-risk children and youth.

Theoretical and Applied Aspects of Education

Through the use of current research we have emphasized the connections between theory and research and the applied world of teaching. Unlike many foundation texts that concentrate primarily on pedagogical knowledge and academic skill domains, this text provides a comprehensive application of research and theory to actual classroom/teaching situations and practice. Through margin notes, special features, and discussion questions, the educational implications of research and theory are reinforced in ways that will be understandable to both practicing and prospective teachers.

  If teaching is not in your future plan. Don't buy this book. Please rent. This book is complete torture for me to read. But if you are planning to be a teacher. But the book, I might be great for you to refer to with all the laws and organizations you guys have. I gave it 4 stars because of the look of the textbook.

  The book was in okay condition, some pages were loose. I received it in a timely fashion and the service was outstanding. Not his typical, but definitely a captivating storyline once in it! I'm hooked!

This book starts off maybe a little slow, and has some rough points and confusing language. However, it quickly becomes captivating and the dystopian lies leads to you, as the reader, wanting more information just as the character does. I love Vega and Delph. This isn't a teachers dream book but it wasn't meant to be. I think it was cleverly different and creative. I've read the first two. I'm curious to see what happens in the third. It's definitely addictive the way he keeps you in suspense.
As for the one star reviews I've seen, I think most people are disappointed it isn't like his other books. It isn't his typical and though you don't like it, maybe you should have read it fully before giving such a bad review. There were some things that needed work (language creation maybe) but if you continue the story, the storyline is unique and captivating. It makes you want to know what will happen next. I am, however, a fan of fantasy and YA novels. Though it has some rough spots, it took five years to write and a lot of research. Give him some credit.

Not Baldacci' s Genre

I do not think that dystopian nor adolescent literature is Baldacci's forte. This book has many problems. The structure of a story must be believable--setting, plot, characters,dialect, etc. A hodgepodge of English Cockney, country slang, and invented words is not convincing as a credible language. The beasts weren't very appealing, nor even believable, but possibly would be to an adolescent reader A mixture of realism and fantasy plus sorcery just did not work for me. As an English teacher, I felt that I was reading a student's creation. On the positive side, I liked Vega's and Delph' s characters. There were some redeeming qualities. To some extent, good triumphs over evil, e.g., Vega's winning the championship and saving the wugs from the jabbits. As far as eternal truth is concerned, exposing scams in governments could apply here. The ending was abrupt, but I suppose that is the trend today in the event the author wants to add a sequel.

Not my style
By 60 something
I ordered this book before I started The Keeper, big mistake. I read only the first 10 pages and was done with it. Again, I saw who the author is and ordered it strictly on the name. Usually I love all of the Baldacci novels, but not this one. Even if I had read them in their proper order, this one being the first, I don't think it would have made any difference. Again, totally my fault. I should have read more about
it before placing my order.

Disappointing Sequel

I LOVE Gary P.'s original book in this series, "Lawn Boy". It is a great read, especially for 5th and 6th grade boys. However, "Lawn Boy Returns" has NONE of the great humor and situations that made the first book so engaging. This sequel has very little dialogue, which makes the text dense and boring, especially for kids. The colorful characters from the first book do not grow or change in this book, and we are also introduced to L.B.'s two friends and four new employees, none of whom add anything to the story whatsoever. There is also the introduction of a new character, Zed, who is crass and crude and says things that young readers should not be reading. Furthermore, the author thinks it is funny to describe Zed getting drunk and stealing (neither of which is funny for this age group). Go read "Lawn Boy" but DO NOT waste your time with this unimaginative follow-up.

I Love Paulsen, but not so much this sequel

"Lawn Boy" was fine, but not even in the top half of Paulsen's body of work. This sequel is missing a lot of what made "Lawn Boy" fun, and for the first time in a Paulsen book it all just seems labored and forced. It's still O.K., but that's about it. Caldwell lets the poor speak for themselves. Supported by his commentary, they tell how the tenant system exploited whites and blacks alike and fostered animosity between them. Bourke-White, who sometimes waited hours for the right moment, captures her subjects in the shacks where they lived, the depleted fields where they plowed, and the churches where they worshipped.

About the Author
Erskine Caldwell (1903-1987) was born in Newnan, Georgia. He became one of America's most widely read, prolific, and critically debated writers, with a literary output of more than sixty titles. At the time of his death, Caldwell's books had sold eighty million copies worldwide in more than forty languages. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1984. Margaret Bourke-White (1906-1971) was among the world's most celebrated photojournalists. One of the original staff photographers at "Fortune" and "Life" magazines, she is best known for her portraits of world leaders as well as such series as those on the Depression-era rural South, World War II, India, South Africa, and the Korean conflict.

Saw the Faces of my Ancestors

Just read this book for the first time. I am a 42 year old woman from South Carolina who has been researching her family tree for several years now. I knew that my paternal grandfather's family was extremely poor and that they "worked other people's land" Someone once described their existence as being similar to the family Caldwell wrote about in Tobacco Road. This book is beautifully written and predicted the civil rights movement thirty years before it happened. A very good book for someone interested in learning about the history of poverty in the South and how it affected not just the Black population but the impoverished whites as well. It eloquently explains how poverty and ignorance bred anger and unrest between the poor whites and the poor blacks of the post civil war depression era south. The photographs are beautiful and stunning. I think it should be a required book for the average high school student studying the history of the deep south and all of it's issues of the early to mid twentieth century. Amazing that it was written in the mid 1930's and you can still see and almost feel the pain of hunger and absolute poverty in the faces and eyes of the people photographed and hear the sadness and hopelessness in their voices.

an amazing depiction of Depression era Southern poverty in words and pictures

In the early years of the Great Depression, author Erskine Caldwell and photographer Margaret Bourke-White spent 18 months in the American Southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee interviewing and photographing tenant farmers, commonly known as sharecroppers. This book, published in 1935 is the result of their work. Caldwell wrote about sharecroppers barely scraping a living from land drained of all fertility, the landlords who kept 10 million Southerners in economic slavery to produce cotton, and the politicians and ministers who supported the system rather than reform it. While he interviewed, Bourke-White sat quietly with camera ready to photograph them. It includes 75 mostly, full-page pictures taken by her that portray the destitute life of the tenant farming families. This is an amazing depiction of Southern poverty in words and pictures that I found very moving in spite of its age.

Nothing less than 5 stars for a piece of soul-wrenching history

Mine is the 75-cent version, 1937, found at a library book sale. I paid $.50 and whenever I pick it up to look through it again, am surprised at my bargain: Bourke-White's photos cum captions get into your head, stay there; the text, Caldwell as Caldwell. It is a slice of our Southern history - black and white - all ages - poverty is the equalizer here, taking prisoners and spitting them out. A photo of a white kid grinning because he is going fishing, showing his teeth, so badly misshapen; yet, at the moment of that photo, the best he will have for the rest of his life. Black women lining up for the $4/month government "old age pension," being grateful for the "helping hand for the colored people." Stunning, amazing, searing. Cannot imagine why my copy was given away as I surely will not ever be doing that.

Brilliantly Written and Researched

Alina Frank addresses an issue that faces many women, and that is overcoming fear, self doubt, shame or self loathing especially when it comes to talking about and enjoying a fulfilling sex life. Still a taboo subject for many, Alina invites the reader to question their own sexuality and examine any limiting beliefs that could be holding them back from a richer deeper, more intimate relationship. Using the transformational, evidence based technique of Tapping, the author shows how years of painful memories and limiting beliefs can be changed within a matter of moments. This well written and well researched book maybe the saving grace for many couples whose sexual desires are out of synch! A must have resource for any practitioner! Brilliant

Practical fixes for a very real problem!

Working as I do with menopausal women, I know that lack of sexual desire is a common problem for midlife women. Many of the women I work with are aware that it's possible to change that but don't have a clear path to rekindle that desire. This book provides that path and Frank describes how to take that path.

A brave foray into a sensitive topic

This book is a welcome relief, as it wades boldly into the territory of diminished sexual desire - an area rife with taboos about talking about it, leaving many women feeling isolated and unable to find the support that they need. While there are now many books on the market focusing on the EFT method, this is to my knowledge the first that applies the method to this very sensitive and important issue affecting many women. Bravo Alina Frank!

Mary Englar did a nice job of showing the fear of South Vietnamese citizens ...

Informative read for junior/high school age students covering Vietnam as an additional source of material to expand on any text book or classroom discussions. Mary Englar did a nice job of showing the fear of South Vietnamese citizens that were forced to quickly flee from their homes and the dangers they faced during their escape from the North Vietnamese Army. Also her description of the helicopter evacuations was done very well, showing just how perilous and seemingly impossible the task of safely removing thousands of evacuees was.

Commander James Bondage is a retired attorney, with a Master’s Degree in European History. His courtroom experiences account for the setting of the “By Judicial Decree” books, and his background in military history helped with the details of the “Cadet” series of books. He is also an avid chess-player, golfer and life-long science fiction addict. He has worked in movies and television as a background actor, but perhaps he is the kiss of death for television shows: he has been in three of them, all of which have been cancelled before completing the first season (including the now infamous "Do No Harm", which only aired twice before getting the axe).

Hard core BDSM at its best!

Wow! This is hard core BDSM at its best. It is not for those who prefer more lighthearted BDSM. The story takes place in an alternate society where women are sold into slavery because of debt and the buyers are allowed to do whatever they want to these women. There are two women who are in this story - one of them is a very stuck-up, bitchy society blonde named Olivia Addison. She is broken completely and very harshly by her new master Caine. The second woman is a sweet, red-headed innocent named Elenora who is also broken by her new master although she comes to enjoy it a lot more than Olivia ever seems to. This is hard core BDSM but very hot so if you are a fan of this type of erotica, you will definitely love this book.

Harsh, non-con, hot!

If you enjoy non-consent erotica then this is a good one to pick up. It has hot sex scene's that are very harsh and some pretty hardcore pain. Although it is not as well described as I like my erotica (in other words it is more "he did this, she did that, a little dialogue, then done" -- rather than a more extended drawn out scene where you get into the character's head really well and the parts of described in vivid detail including what it feels like) it still satisfies. This is not romance - it's really PWP non consent. If that's your thing - I can recommend this author's works. They are a little short for the price but in general satisfy.
