Paul Coates is Professor in the Film Studies Department of the University of Western Ontario, Canada. His books include The Story of the Lost Reflection (1985), The Gorgon's Gaze (1991), Lucid Dreams: the Cinema of Krzysztof Kie?lowski (ed.) (1999), Cinema, Religion and the Romantic Legacy (2003), The Red and the White: The Cinema of People's Poland (2005) and Cinema and Colour: The Saturated Image (2010). In 1997 he became only the second Film Studies academic to give a series of Gauss seminars at Princeton University. His Screening the Face was published in 2012 by Palgrave Macmillan.

Among the great books of all time

Huang Po's zesty and expansive teachings are brought to life in this small but infinitely faceted gem. It is as if the quintessential Zen Master himself is present in these pages and in the mind and being of the reader. It is remarkable that a transmission in a translated text over a thousand years old can be so profound. I have been reading and living with this book, and Huang Po's presence, for decades and the humor, as penetrating as the Marx Brothers, the generosity of spirit, and the merciless and elegantly paired down exposition of Zen are a continual source of joy.

Does your workplace seem to be ruled by fear? Order is kept by rules, regulations and often ranks of stressed executives acting as “little Hitlers” who lead by shouting, bullying and other bad behaviour including the ultimate sanction of dismissal?

Of course, every company needs order and workplaces must have regulations, often for safety and regulatory purposes. Some rules are good and necessary. Yet maybe the company runs sub-optimally because of the climate of fear, oppression and chaos within. Just like someone being bullied or abused, often the victims are too scared to speak up and the offender might not even thoroughly know of their actions, the causes behind it and the deep effects it is having.

Nobody has left. Nobody has sued. Nobody has hit the boss (or in the USA resorted to drawing a weapon)… so it must be ok and everything is tickety-boo. After all, people always complain about their bosses don’t they? The company is making profits…

Even if your company is not overly plagued with such sabotage affecting its bottom-line, maybe things could be optimised in any case to remove as much negativity as possible. Science to the rescue? The authors set out to look at the latest developments in the field of neurosciences – itself a relatively new field of science that is enjoying a boom thanks to technological advances – to look closer at what makes us tick and what makes us fearful. Fear is a powerful, debilitating and changing emotion and when you think how much time we spend at work and how our life is regulated by our ability to work and earn, it can affect a lot more than just a company workplace.

The book’s publicity material notes that fear is one of the most powerful motivating forces in our working culture today, with an overwhelming majority of bosses using it to keep order. “How often have you or someone you know experienced the fear of being thought a slacker and fired; of being unfairly criticised; of being back-stabbed and passed over for promotion; of being left in the dark, excluded, left out of meetings, undercut, pre-empted; of being the last to know? Fear easily overtakes excitement and enthusiasm as the primary driver of motivation at work. It is readily used as a management tool because there is simply nothing easier than tapping into another person’s fear system,” the authors note.

Sadly they are right. Change is, of course, possible if we (as a society) can understand this and can push for change. It won’t be an overnight sensation but the smart employers will be looking to maximise their employee’s motivation and happiness, or they should be, as recruitment costs a lot of time and money, even for the lower, more commodity positions. Imagine the costs finding a good executive, employed on a six-figure salary, who probably can switch between workplaces and yet they are often treated to the same pressures of fear from their bosses and often pass it on (it’s normal, right?) down the chain of command.

Despite the book being written in a fairly open, accessible form this is not a light read. This is not a complaint, just a fact. You should read it first to get on-board with the concept, then re-read it with a view of tailor-making a change implementation for your own organisation and then maybe a further re-read to see what you might have missed.

The authors advocate the creation and promotion of a “Fear-Free Organisation” (hence the book’s title) and then give you the tools to set you along this pathway. It won’t be a simple overnight change, it requires rewriting the collective minds of many, it requires rewriting a culture that still may be viewed as being “normal” and there is a good chance it will be met with outright hostility (remember, many view “attack” as the best form of “defence” after all…) Most importantly, the authors can’t give a step-by-step guide either. It is just impossible!

What about the future? “In the fear-free organisation there are no panic rooms, no internal enemies, no bad guys. The fear-free organisation has zero tolerance for bullies, for backbiting, vicious gossip, tittle-tattle, undermining behaviours, hijacking tactics, political jockeying for position, favouritism, and fascist-style policies. In the fear-free organisation leaders understand that scared people spend a lot more time plotting their survival than working productively. In the fear-free organisation people work on inspiration. They are encouraged to take risks, to think out of the box, to challenge the status quo, to explore new frontiers, to stand up and be counted,” the book states.

Utopia? Maybe. Yet people didn’t think that man would one day walk on the moon. It takes a dream, it takes a vision, it takes a lot of hard work and inevitably knockbacks along the way. That “moonwalk” may be in reach for your workplace. Your colleagues and future colleagues may thank you for inspiring the change. Your own health and your family might also thank you. If only they realised and understood.

The authors have thought of it all (or near as damn it). The book cannot be written off as the collective madness of a bunch of white-coated boffins who’ve never stuck a foot outside of a university and seen what happens in the real world. Field work, interviews, scientific evidence and actual examples are mixed together to great effect and of course references to source materials are given so you can dig even deeper if you wish (or are seeking to discredit the claims and shoot the messenger along the way).

This is a book you want to ignore; you want to be able say that it contains just plain “BS” and claim that the world is just perfect. Yet, maybe you already realise that there is a problem. So order this book today, get yourself sold on the idea and then seek to effect change. One man or woman can’t change a world, but many can create a sea change.

One of the best books I have ever read; it came into my life at the perfect time

This book is up there with all the other metaphysical, motivational and inspirational works of arts by Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer, Harv Eker, The Hiphoppreacher, Les Brown, Anthony De Mello, Oprah Winfrey, Jewel Diamond Taylor, and many more.

I like it because Markus is frank and to the point. He has taken out the fluff, fillers, and binders and has gotten to the core nitty-gritty to the secret of a successful living in the here and now...no sugar-coating...so candid a lot of people aren't going to want to hear it...

It is such a great humorous read that I have my fourteen year old son read it before he let's his hormones take control :)

Well, either do the work now or later but effectually you will have to do the work...you can get over on man but you can not get over on the Universe!

About the Author
A.J. (Lonnie) Strickland received a BS in Math and Physics from the University of Georgia, an MS in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a PhD from Georgia State university. He currently holds the rank of Professor of Strategic Management in the Graduate School of Business at the University of Alabama. He has done extensive consulting and research work. In recent years, he was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award for the Graduate School of Business, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award for the University of Alabama.

John E. Gamble is currently Associate Dean and Professor of Management in the Mitchell College of Business at the University of South Alabama. His teaching specialty at USA is strategic management and he also conducts a course in strategic management in Germany, which is sponsored by the University of Applied Sciences in Worms.

Dr. Gamble's research interests center on strategic issues in entrepreneurial, health care, and manufacturing settings. His work has been published in various scholarly journals and he is the author or co-author of more than 50 case studies published in an assortment of strategic management and strategic marketing texts. He has done consulting on industry and market analysis for clients in a diverse mix of industries.

Make Sure You Get The Right Version!!!!

This is the "Concepts and Readings" text.

There is another text that looks EXACTLY the same except for the subtitle.

That book is the "Concepts and Cases" text, and it ALSO has an 18e on it.

When your instructor assigns a case study, you'll be up a creek if you don't have the "Concepts and Cases".

I'm giving it one star because if they're going to make a third of the book have completely different content, they ought not to have the exact same title, edition number, and front cover illustration as the other version.

Note: This book is nearly identical to the latest edition. The only difference is picture on the front, fonts used, page numbers, and some of the problems at the end of the chapters were simply rearranged (compared it with a classmate's). DO NOT fall for the whole "you need the latest edition" requirement. It is downright crooked for a publishing company to change such minor things, call it a newer edition, and up the price to hundreds of dollars. It's also heartless for a professor in a college of business to force his students to pay hundreds of dollars for something so similar to a book that only costs $40 or $50. Buy the next latest edition of any book you purchase and save a ton of money!

Careful who you buy from

The problem I had was seller of this product. He was located in Honolulu Hawaii and had an extremely difficult time getting the product to me. He was late shipping the merchandise and then could not track or locate the product in transit. What should've taken days ended up taking weeks and inevitably a month to arrive, by this time the book arrived it was trivial and no longer necessary since I had purchased the product from another source. I informed the seller of the problem and he refused to take it back stating that once the product is shipped it is my responsibility, unfortunately this is not the case since he paid the shipping all shipping responsibilities are the product of the sender. The product took longer to arrive than what was advertised taking 42 days. I contacted Amazon and Amazon agreed that this product was the fault of the shipping company and should be taken back by the seller. Again the seller refused to take back his product stating that “that he could not resell it and that I should resell the book” I forwarded his response to Amazon and they apologized for his actions. Unfortunately I am now stuck with two identical books.
Overall the book is an excellent book in strategic management though is slowly growing out of date due to the new addition that has been released. I would recommend this product as a resource.

SABRINA FELDMAN manages the Planetary Science Instruments Office at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Born in Riverside, California in 1968, she received a Ph.D. in physics in 1996 from the University of California at Berkeley. She lives in Monrovia, California with her husband and two children.

Feldman's second volume is as much fun as her first

Having greatly enjoyed Ms. Feldman’s first volume of several years ago (The Apocryphal William Shakespeare: Book One of a “Third Way” Shakespeare Authorship Scenario), I eagerly anticipated her Book Two—but not, I confess, without some trepidation. The first volume was chock full of fascinating detail and insight into the Golden Age of Modern English Drama; but once an author—particularly an “anti-Stratfordian”—displays in full view the theoretical axe that they wish to grind, more often than not they begin to lose my full attention and admiration. I’m not a dyed-in-the wool “Stratfordian”—I like to keep as open a mind as I can on the different proposals and perspectives of scholars as they examine the thorny issues of authorship in the Elizabethan/Jacobean plays—but I have to admit that none of the alternate scenarios offered by the advocates of Oxford, Bacon, Marlowe, Mary Sidney, et. al., have persuaded me, however intriguing and fascinating their arguments might prove.
That said, I’m pleased to report that Ms. Feldman’s Book Two is as entertaining and informative as her first volume. I think that I’m probably the perfect audience for both her theoretical approach as well as her wonderfully clear and unpretentious writing style: I’ve loved reading, performing in, directing, and publishing about William Shakespeare for decades. The questions, historical gaps, and biographical inconsistencies that nag at the anti-Stratfordians also nag at me; and yet, I certainly can find it within the realm of plausibility that the young country boy named Will Shakespeare could very well have been the natural theatrical genius that the Stratfordians argue for.
Ms. Feldman’s ingenious proposal offers a potential bridge between the two camps; and it does so with wonderful research, illuminating insights and a clear and breezy writing style that does not demand years of academic study and prior knowledge to follow. As Eric Sams (whose work Ms. Feldman refers to on occasion in the book) lamented years ago, Shakespearean scholarship and academia is unfortunately too often a closed and exclusive club, rather incestuous, repeating and building upon ideas that should long ago have been largely put to rest. (The so-called “bad quartos” being memorial reconstructions of good texts, to give one such example.) Ms. Feldman’s books disarmingly show the absurdities of many of these accepted ideas, while at the same time pointing us in new directions that more established and recognized Shakespearean scholars might themselves (and should) have directed us toward decades ago—if they hadn’t been so busy reading and re-hashing their colleagues’ books ad infinitum.
Sabrina Feldman’s “day job” is at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (impressive enough on its own!); she does her work on Shakespeare out of pure love for the subject—and it shows in these wonderfully entertaining and enlightening books. I highly recommend them both…but read The Apocryphal William Shakespeare: Book One first! Even if you don’t completely accept her hypotheses on the origins of these classics of dramatic literature, you will learn an amazing amount about the plays, their creators, and the age that gave them birth.

The question of Shakespearean authorship is endlessly fascinating and this is one of my favorite
takes on it. The author's earlier book "The Apocryphal William Shakespeare" looks at the often-
overlooked works attributed to Shakespeare that were not included in the canon. For me it changed
my thinking about Shakespeare as much as Elaine Pagel's "The Gnostic Gospels" changed my thinking
about Christianity, and I return to it again and again. Here in Book Two she extends the argument
and makes a compelling case for a new candidate. Despite a wealth of research the book is fun to
read- her style is always engaging and often very persuasive. Very highly recommended.

It's bigger on the inside!

Dr. Feldman's previous book, about the Shakespeare Apocrypha, was a great read because there was so much to it - review of play after play, poem after poem, evaluation of many more "data points" than any other argument about the Authorship Question that I have seen. This book is the same. As always when looking back 400 years, there's a certain amount of speculation, but that's always clearly stated. Many chapters, though, are startling in the depth of the argument. You'll find that Sackville was familiar with the setting of the play, then that he was familiar with the sources, then with historic events that seem to be alluded (Sackville's dog even makes an appearance), then with the philosophical concepts the play seems to incorporate, then with the subjects Shakespeare chose in creating allegories. When that's all done, there are parallel quotes from Sackville's few extant works to many of Shakespeare's works - so many that you'd think Shakepeare had a Sackville "Quote of the Day" calendar on his writing table. Dr. Feldman's argument covers about 300 pages, but there's so much information on every page that you would think it's many more than that. It's an excellent read for anyone!

WARNING - This book has a printing error in that ...

The song Overnight Bag is listed on the Back Cover. It is NOT included in the contents. It's been replaced by Lonesome Highway. I contacted the publisher and when they realized their mistake they emailed me the score of Overnight Bag.
Took a few Emails but I got there in the end.
I'm now happy that they have a decent complaints department that does listen to the customer. Thanks you Ella.

Not bad...

Like most tab books there are some mistakes mostly with chord voicings. I use any video i can find to verify most of the tabs i use. But this will certainly get you started, great selection of tunes also.

Good but don't expect Overnight Bag to be in it.

From what I've gotten to so far it really seems to be a pretty good quality book. The notation is easy to follow I like the layout, lyrics are spot on. My only major disappointment is that in the amazon description it lists Overnight Bag as being one of the twelve songs. I purchased this book mainly for Shadow Play and Overnight Bag which happen to be my two favorite Rory Gallagher songs. However, Overnight Bag is not in the book. I am not able to fully learn them by ear so I wanted this product to help me through the more difficult sections. The Shadow Play main solo section seems really well done, so hopefully that makes up for it.

Human behaviorist Lambert uses research from the areas of kinesics, zoology, gender studies, and psychology to demonstrate how people use body language to reinforce speech or indicate their mood. The guide triple-indexes the material, with one section organized by body parts (e.g., arms-linked, legs-crossed), the second by actions and their meanings (e.g., signs of conflict, sincerity, and deceit), and the third by emotions and meanings (e.g., embarrassment, ownership). A particularly interesting chapter covers signs of deceit, with photographs illustrating dishonest gaze behavior and foot actions. This is easily one of the best books on the subject, even surpassing Susan Quilliam's Body Language. Highly recommended for all libraries.

A bit less than what I was hoping for. Many of the conclusions seemed pretty intuitive and not much new. A good primer and an easy read for someone approaching the subject for the first time. Well organized and illustrated. It is just a surface skim and I was hoping for deeper.
