A superhero to rival all other superheroes! We are all in need of heroes. None more than those that have difficulties with managing frustrations, anxiety, anger, emotional regulation, and the ins and outs of sensory processing. Lauren Brukner stands at the forefront of her profession and presents this book as a beacon of hope and a positive force in the lives of both children and the adults that care for them. By breaking down and simplifying such complex issues into small digestible bits, the text is instantly entertaining and enlightening all at once. (Dr. Frederick B. Covington, OTD)

Special Needs Book Review highly recommends How to Be a Superhero Called Self-Control!: Super Powers to Help Younger Children to Regulate their Emotions and Senses by Lauren Brukner, MS, OTR/L. Adults will value Part 2 written for Parents with tips to make the most of the strategies and activities. Here they will find guidelines how to approach each section of the book and lots of photocopiable or downloadable resources that can be laminated and used many times. There are super power charts, reinforcers, certificates and reminder tools to support children in upholding superhero strategies after the book has been read. (Special Needs Book Review)
Intended for children with all kinds of behavioural, sensory, emotional and anger problems, this book's jazzy, 'with it' style should appeal to young children. As it must be used with an adult, it could well be something whole classes can benefit from, particularly if there are several children who actually have these problems...the exercises are fun and easy to do. Sensory processing has much to do with children who wiggle a lot, such as those with ADHD and those who get so involved with physical activity that they can't stop by themselves...lots of black and white illustrations add to the whole, and information at the back of the book for parents, teachers, therapists and carers will be of great use in planning sessions. A self-care autism spectrum management system for children and teens!
By Eva Mendes
"This book is dedicated to all children, everywhere. Know that you are all superheroes, amazingly powerful, unique, and wonderful, just the way you are. My wish for you is to just believe it, mind, heart, and soul."
Ms. Brukner's book dedication is just a little taste of her wise and warm book!
As a psychotherapist working with teens on the autism spectrum, I found Ms. Brukner's book to be a valuable tool that I wouldn't hesitate at all to use with my young clients. She frames strategies to manage the child's Asperger's or autism as a super-hero called self-control. The book is clear and succinct and details coping strategies for spectrum traits such as frustrations, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, anger, and emotional regulation with delightful illustrations! This book simplifies the toolbox that children with Asperger's and autism need to incorporate as an integral part of their daily routine. Ms. Brukner's book is easy for children to internalize with the clear visuals and gives their parents and therapists a framework to create a self-care/management system and mindset.

Amazing Resource!
By Diana M Erben
Although the book is written for kids, it will prove to be an invaluable asset to teachers and parents alike! The strategies that are given in the book are practical and easy to implement across all settings - the classroom, home, recess, the grocery store... As a fifth grade teacher, I have seen these strategies help my students when they become anxious, frustrated, or upset. The language is incredibly easy to understand and the scenarios in the book are very relate-able to kids. Not only are the strategies helpful, but there are resources that teachers/parents can copy right from the book to help remind kids what strategies are best to use in each type of situation. I would definitely recommend to all teachers and parents!

What a great asset to any classroom library
By Amazon Customer
What a great asset to any classroom library! Readable, relatable, and engaging this book puts to words actions that kids need to take to develop control of their bodies and their emotions in a simple, direct way. The author names common feelings and anxieties that many children face in their daily academic and social life, and specific, practical strategies they can use to help themselves. It was fun to read to my students, and also fun to hear their feedback and openness to sharing their feelings afterwards. Now, in my classroom, we have an awareness and a common language which allows us to help each other, and ourselves, to do the best we can every day.
