Good book for paramedic school

I purchased this book for paramedic school, and overall really enjoyed the book. It was very readable and emphasized important points very well. It has a ton of practice ECGs to read as well as their interpretations of each in the back of the book. I took off 1 star here because it feels like each ECG was interpreted by a different person. One ECG which has minimal elevation is considered elevation in one and not the next. Same thing with pathological Q waves. Other than that, I really enjoyed it and was very informative.

A personal note from the author

I’ve had ME for most of my adult life, being first bedbound and, more recently, mostly housebound but able to live independently. I know what it is to not have enough energy to do basic things such as sit up and read or to prepare a meal and, over the years, I’ve come up with lots of tricks for doing things more easily.

When I started to write this book of tips, I thought I’d mostly be drawing on my 20 years’ experience and filling in a few corners by looking at other people’s suggestions. As I started to research and to find ideas from other patients and from occupational health advisors, I had one forehead-slapping moment after another of ‘I wish I’d thought of that years ago’. There were lots of great ideas out there, but scattered and hidden.

So my working title changed from 50 Tips to 100 Tips and finally, 150 Tips. I printed off my manuscript and magic-marked all the new methods and products I wanted to try and these new things have already made my own life easier. I hope this book does the same for you!

Great Book, Even for Long TIme Sufferers

I have lived with ME/CFS for 11 years. You would then think I would know everything thing that could help make my life easier. Well, I was wrong. This book gave me some very good ideas to help keep me from spending excess energy. The author did quite a bit of research to find not only activities, but products that could help ease the suffering of patients. I have now used at least four of her ideas to help decrease the amount of energy I spend everyday. I refer back to this book again and again to help make my life easier. And that, I believe, is what we all want.

About the Author
The great Puritan preacher and theologian William Perkins was born in 1558 in Marston Jabbet in Warwickshire, and received his formal education at Christ's College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1581, but remained at Christ's as a fellow until 1595; he served as lecturer (preacher) in the church of Great St Andrews from 1584 until his death in 1602 at the age of forty-four.

A Puritan Jewel: Suberbly Revised for Modern Readers

William Perkins is arguably the giant of Puritanism and understanding him is crucial to understanding that enormously influential movement. This very readable book is typical Perkins: practical, devout, and Biblical. It has been excellently revised for a modern readership. I might have preferred a bit more of that early seventeenth century flavor to be retained but I'm a doctoral student in Puritanism. Even the lay reader will find it easy going. Perkins (1560-1602) wrote this book about the ministry. It contains insights about what the church is to do and be drawn especially from Job and a few other unlikely places. Perkins especially focuses on the need for Biblical practice in all of the Church's life. This book should be required reading in all seminaries and Bible colleges. It makes a great gift to any pastor or missionary. And its good for any serious Christian. Highly recommended

A Puritan Primer on Preaching

Perkins was one of the fathers of Puritanism and his practical and pastoral wisdom is captured well in this modernized edition of his two books "The Art of Prophesying" and "The Callling of the Ministry."
Part One, "The Art of Prophesying," is really a handbook on hermeneutics and homiletics from the Puritan perspective. Perkins explicates the several principles for interpreting and expounding the Scriptures and then gives detailed instruction on how to apply the same. The chapter on "Use and Application" will give readers the background behind the familiar Puritan sermon structure of "Doctrine and Use."
Parts Two and Three deal with "The Calling of the Ministry." They are really nothing more than the exposition of two Old Testament passages of Scripture, Job 33 and Isaiah 6. Many interesting and practical issues are handled here including how a minister might know his calling and what his responsibilities are to God's people. Perkins had a high view of the dignity and authority of the ministerial gift which is sadly lacking among evangelicals today. While some of his ideas will seem foreign and perhaps a little extreme to many, it is certain that his emphasis will help balance our opposite extremes.
Perkins is not the best Puritan author that I have read, nor is this book the most helpful book on preaching I have encountered. But it was worth while. Incidentally - for those who are checking out this title hoping to get a Puritan perspective on the charismatic understanding of the gift of prophesy, the following quote well summarizes Perkins' view: "I am not here making any allowance for the claims people make that they have received 'revelations'. These have no substance; they are either dreams of their own, or illusions of the devil. They despise both human learning and the study of the Scriptures, and trust exclusively in 'revelations of the Spirit'. But God's Spirit does not work except on the foundation of the Word." Such was the Puritan understanding of those who claimed extra-Biblical revelation. By "prophesy" Perkins understood "preaching." And that is what this book is about.

Grace H. Kim, AIA, is a principal and co-founder of Schemata Workshop, an architectural collaborative in Seattle. Kim received her bachelor of architecture with a minor in business from Washington State University, and had previously worked in practice at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago, Bumgardner Architects in Seattle, and as principal at Place Architects in Seattle. For two years, Kim was university education coordinator at the International Masonry Institute, where she developed masonry education programs for architecture students. As a member of the AIA Mentorship Task Group, she spearheaded efforts to create a national AIA mentorship website, entitled "Mentorship: a Journey in Collaborative Learning." In 2004, Kim was the first recipient of the AIA NAC/YAF Emerging Professionals Mentorship Award.

A Standard of Quality

When we launched a new course, IDP Registration, and made it a requirement for graduation I was suddenly a mentor to 160 students and as the program rolled out that number increased annually. Students are automatically registered for the course in the first semester of their junior year and then they enter a cooperative work sequence which enables them to begin earning IDP credit. In order to distribute the advising load amongst the faculty members our department head held a special meeting of the Architecture faculty and I did a presentation of IDP Coordinators Boot Camp. At the end of the presentation each person was given a copy of The Survival Guide to Architectural Internship And Career Development by Grace H. Kim and instructed to use it as the standard for advising students. Today we have well over 500 students both within the program and recent graduates who come to us for counseling. When we add new faculty I still give them an orientation and a copy of the book so that we maintain that standard of quality.

I wish Grace Kim's new book, The Survival Guide, had been around when I was a new college graduate. In those days, we had to navigate the job market and internship process on our own--the proverbial equivalent to the uphill, both ways, in the snow scenario. Now, no one has to endure that ordeal.

The book answers every conceivable question about internship, licensure, and beyond. It is a must read for soon-to-be graduates, interns in their first few years of practice, and those who haven't taken the ARE and find themselves in a perpetual state of internship, as well as those pursuing nontraditional careers. As a young practitioner--principal and cofounder of Schemata Workshop, an architectural collaborative in Seattle--Grace Kim is a former IDP coordinator and has mentored many interns. Her writing is colored by her experience and she takes an informal, candid approach. While no substitute for a real-life mentor, this book serves to fill in the gaps.

I attended a seminar at the 2006 AIA National Convention in Los Angeles presented by Grace Kim and Lee Waldrep, the author of Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design. The seminar was conducted in a workshop format, allowing for interaction within smaller groups. Kim believes in the power of peer mentoring, as explained through her ladder metaphor:

"I'd like to share with you my ladder metaphor related to mentoring. If you can imagine a large ladder with all of us standing on rungs representing different stages in our architectural career, there is someone just ahead of you and others immediately behind you. But the gaps between the rungs may at times appear too distant and it may not be clear how you can advance to the next one. For each person these large gaps may appear at different points in their career. So no matter where you are in your career, you have the ability to be a mentor by sharing the knowledge you possess with those on the rung behind you. Reaching back to provide them a helpful hand to pull up to the next rung can make a big difference for them and a huge difference for the future of our profession. You may know this from a personal experience yourself. I would encourage you to keep this metaphor in mind as you progress through your career--I think you will find that mentorship will bring you many personal and professional rewards in ways that you'd never imagine by simply reaching back to help someone advance to the next rung."

This book literally CATAPULTED me into another dimension in my pursuit of the presence of Jesus. Amanda's heart for God is so evident throughout the pages and truly the supernatural experiences she shares so candidly are validated scripturally! I can see myself in this book and recall the countless times God has met me, as well as His angels. I had not been as aware of angels around me, but others have validated seeing them time and time again. But now, I see and experience the grace of God's presence through them in many ways including financially and economically, through healing and restoration and even in business! Dive into this amazing chronicle of experiencing the one on one, face to face time with the REAL Jesus the Christ!! Being a mother myself with so little time to steal away and get that intimate conversation with the Lord, where you can actually know that you have been face to face with the redeemer, I am at awe of how these pages unfold into topical, surreal events that if we just use the wisdom nuggets Amanda has shared with the world of her venture and dedication to see God, that we too can tap into the tangible presence beyond what we can and will ever imagine. This book is definitely a must read, as well as a great group study masterpiece for all mothers; single, married widowed and also the men(can't leave them out). Young people longing for more of God, this is it!!! In this season, and many to come, I truly recommend FACE TIME!! You will not be disappointed, in Jesus name!!

Wow!!! This is one of the best books I have ever read on the presence of God. LOVE IT !!! I felt my hunger rising for Jesus after each chapter. The best thing is it's so practical and that's what you need the simplicity that is in Jesus yet it had so much depth and deepeness of God. You will fall more in Love with Jesus as you read. I even teared up because it touched me right in my heart as I had been praying just days before the book came out about increasing my prayer life. I finished it in one night. The Holy Spirit is such a vital part of our life and this book will challenge you and teach you all at the same time. I highly recommend you purchase this book and tell your friends and family, this book will be an awesome witnessing tool too. To the Author Amanda Ferguson please keep writing the authenticity is amazing in her testimonies . I also recommend Jonathan Ferguson's Boot Camp Prayer and the Art of War. Reading them together will be sure to increase your spiritual capacity!
