I'm tired of being a sucker. I'm done.

It saddens me to say it, but this will be my last purchase of a Julia Quinn novel. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton and The Duke and I are two of my all-time favorite romance novels, but JQ stopped being an auto-buy for me long ago, when it became obvious that her effort (or maybe inspiration) had disappeared. I had high hopes for this one, since it's a prequel to the Bridgerton series. Maybe the old JQ magic was back, I thought. No. Sadly, not the case.

To be perfectly honest, I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of JQ's editors. They know this plot is paper-thin. They know the internal and external dialogue meanders along for waaaay too long. They know these characters are stock reiterations of previous JQ heroes and heroines. But somewhere along the way, they obviously decided to coast on the author's former glory. Because suckers like me will still pony up $7 in the misguided hope that these books will actually contain something resembling a plot, with conflict, sexual tension and unique, fully-developed characters. Nope. What we get instead is pages and pages (and pages) of asinine non-sequiturs and supposedly witty dialogue that does absolutely nothing to move the plot forward. There are at least three or four instances in this book when a character asks another, "What's wrong?" And the character responds, "Nothing." AND THEY MEAN IT. There is actually nothing wrong with them. It's filler. JQ has reached her word count.

I wouldn't even recommend this one to die-hard Bridgerton fans. It's a tepid carbon-copy of that series, so I'd just suggest re-reading the Bridgerton series and preserving your love for the JQ of old.

Tepid, without plot or purpose. Apparently two people fell in love and found themselves, I didn't notice. I bought this book because the library didn't have it and entirely regret the choice. Considering I had recently re-read "When He was Wicked" it really remphasized how downhill her plotting had gone. A book where nothing happens, but there's plot and growth and change in the characters. JQ can write, she just hasn't bothered to here.

This was a tiring read. I kept checking my list of books already read because it was like I'd already read it, but it wasn't on that list (yes, I read so many books I've had to make lists or I end up with multiple copies of a book because the blurb looks promising). On one hand, there's all the familiar (and now very tired/predictable) elements of the Bridgerton series - the family, the Pall Mall (again), the matchmaking parents, the now banal bantering between siblings and heroine, none of which seemed to keep the story moving, and none of which had much point to it at all.

It was predictable. (Probably why I kept thinking I'd read the story before).

I do hope this author rediscovers her mojo soon - preferably in an entirely new series with an entirely new/fresh cast of characters.

Warrior Soul

Of all the genres in the Bible to describe the Christian life, soldier definitely is the prominent one. This book more than others I've read on the topic hits the ball squarely on the head regarding what it means to be a "soldier of Jesus Christ"! You will not regret taking the time to immerse yourself in the pages of this book. I highly recommend it without reservation.

For the warriors out there!

My boyfriend just loves this book. He has always felt of himself to be a warrior and it really comes from that military like frame of reference. He loves how it will take warrior principles and gently tie it into the word of God and that God needs warriors. He has applied it to his own life. Great for those who love history and combat.

A Paragon of Advocacy

The Autism Mom's Survival Guide is a necessary book for parents who are struggling to cope with how to function at anything resembling normal where there is an autistic child in the house.

Upbeat and honest, but never condescending or perky. The book manages to be very supportive but keeps an arms length from the dark places autism can take a family. It does offer real, balanced advice from someone who has been and will always be there. She and her husband have three children, one of whom is autistic. Susan is a great guide to have as she leads you through some effective methods of handling the day to day activities with a special needs child.

This is Susan's second book on autism. This is not a sequel though. Her first, Making Peace with Autism, is also worth seeking out.

I found the book to be geared mainly toward autism moms, (although there is plenty for fathers to get from this) who are the true heroes in the struggle to understand this condition.

If you have a child with autism in your life, you may find yourself nodding your head with many of the stories Susan and the parents she writes about have experienced. If you're new, you will find out very quickly what it is like to be a part of an autistic child's family.

A Must-Read for Autism Parents

This informative book should be in the library of every autism parent. It gives useful, practical advice from both the author and other ASD parents on how to survive and thrive as the parent of a child with a very difficult disability. I would also recommend it to educators and grandparents, so that they can get a good feel for the home life and unique challenges of an autism family. It is an excellent companion to the author's first book "Making Peace with Autism".

More than just a guide

First a disclaimer: I am not the parent of an autistic child.

This new work by Susan Senator, although intended to be of assistance to the parent of autisic children, can be appreciated by anyone. This book is more than just a parenting guide. This book is more than just the story of a parent with an unusual child. This is the story of the personal growth of a remarkable young woman. It is the story of not only accepting the hardships of a particular problem, but of embracing your plight and appreciating all that it is: both good and bad. It is certainly a book that can be appreciated by anyone who is willing to give it a try.

It is also the work of a very gifted writer. Susan Senator takes us into her family to explore how she (and the rest of the family) tackled the everyday adventures of the autistic child. She moves us when she tells us about getting her son a tuxedo for his first "prom" and she intrigues us with her use of belly dancing as an emotional escape. My favorite part is the comparison between the children's game of Candyland with being a parent of an autistic child.

This one is worth a few hours. It is much more than a simple parenting guide.

Catechize your children with the saint of the day

Coupled with a chapter from the New Saint Joseph Baltimore Catechism (#1), nightly readings from Pauline Media's two-volume "Saints for Young Readers" are an excellent way for parents to catechize their children.

Organized to parallel the Church's liturgical calendar, each day's saint is given a two-page biographical sketch that highlights his or her life, virtues, and holiness. Also included is a brief reflection or prayer based on a virtue exemplified by the saint.

Well written, make every saint's life shine!

We've been reading these stories at the breakfast table with our 4th and 5th graders. It takes about 3 minutes, and they get to start the morning with a cool story to inspire them.

The stories are written in a tone that children can understand, but without patronizing them. If a saint's life involved mistreatment or martyrdom this is not shoved under the rug: it is told, but always in a way that brings out clearly that the saint underwent this because of their love of God and their neighbors. The stories also manage to bring out how these saints lived doing good deeds to specific, concrete people, and manage to paint a warm, loving human being even when dealing with the most obscure saints!

At the end of each story, there is a one-paragraph reflection that focuses on what we can learn from the life of this saint. This helps to show how varied their lives and personalities were and how they model very different virtues. This paragraph is phrased as a prayer ("let us ask to God that we can learn from so and so...").

It's amazing how just a short reading from this book (two actually, since it's in two volumes) has made our mornings so different! It doesn't work always (sometimes the kids are too distracted), but it does help you bring a supernatural, prayerful moment to what would otherwise be just "hurry up! Do you have your lunchbox?"
