We can "rediscover" our continent―not as a source of income but as a home, a place in which we are to find our strength and character, and in which certain moral courtesies and obligations obtain. This brief and dazzling essay plumbs the depths of human selfishness to distill an abiding message for this and all times. Lopez has a distinctive ability to appraise the beauty of nature and culture and to highlight the links between the two which can strengthen us as individuals and societies. The message of biophilia, explored by EO Wilson, has not been articulated more strongly.

Lisa C. Nevett is Associate Professor of Greek Archaeology at the University of Michigan. Ault, 2005).

Not what I had hoped for

I ordered this item hoping for archeological photos and/or drawings to illustrate the written information. While the information is interesting and helpful, there are very few photos and/or drawings. Additionally, the print is very small. For my 'older' eyes, this is a problem. For my purposes, it was not a worthwhile purchase.

Short but sophisticated

As expected this is a very short book. But within its scope, the discussions on the myriad topics are nuanced and captivating. A whole succinct chapter is devoted on why people commit crimes. The heavy interplay between the person and his milieu is very well and thoroughly explained. The concept and nature of the "insanity plea" is also explicated in layman terms. The book also demystifies the so called "profiling" process; it helps but plays a very small role in police work.

As a medical specialist I find the author's discussion on "personality disorders" particularly fascinating and relevant. He offers insight to these types of coniditions that I did not obtain from my medical school training.

The book also talks about the role of the forensic psychologist in helping offenders, victims, and law enforces to rehabilitate, to cope, and to work efficiently. The future of the discipline is also briefly discussed.

Outstanding summary

This is a much more dignified approach to summarizing whole disciplines than the "For Dummies" and other series. It's well written, informative, and comprehensive in spite of being "very short." I'll turn to this series for other summaries without hesitation. The only trouble is the small type - I know it's necessary in a small book, but mine aged eyes have to work hard while I read it.

Forensic Psychology

This is a short book as its sub title suggests but it gives a neat and concise overview of the subject. Many people will think from watching television drama and reading crime fiction that many cases are solved by bringing in a profiler but this is far from being the case. Forensic psychologists are becoming more and more involved with the criminal and judicial processes but in ways which were aren't as glamorous as fiction portrays.

Forensic psychologists work with convicted criminals to try and establish why crimes are committed, what personality and background factors lead people to commit crimes rather than stick to the straight and narrow. They can also advise on whether someone is mad or bad and whether it is possible to use a defence of insanity, and conversely what prevents a defence of insanity succeeding.

In the US forensic psychologists are becoming involved in selecting jurors to try and influence the outcome of a trial by selecting jurors because of their existing views. This is regarded as a step too far by many.

This is a fascinating overview of an interesting subject and it provides a list of further reading for those who want to take their interest further. If you want to read the real story - then read this book.

A help for PhD life

Stepping into the area of research and starting to do the a PhD is a route which many people do not dare to take and those who take are not all know for certain what will happen in the process. The PhD education is very different form the undergraduate or Master's period. Many people think about PhD as a next step after Master which is only characterized by dealing with some more advance topics in the subject area. However at least for most of the cases it is not true. The book is among the very few resources which have had publish to help people interested in PhD to learn about the realities of doing a PhD.
I found the book very interesting when finding that many of my findings of PhD life is valid for doing PhD in general. Also the writer helps to inform about the fact of the PhD process like dissertation, supervisor and examination which every PhD student is concerned and seeks to find more facts about it. The writing style is informal and the writers comment on issues from their practical point of view and avoid referring to other sources. Some short memos about some famous people and how they have got their PhD makes the reading more exciting and the reader more eager to continue. However the book is based on the experiences from UK educational system and unconsciously assumes that the interest of the reader is in UK universities. The book mentions many practicalities in this respect to do research and being a PhD student in UK. However the book avoids discussing about how the research should be conducted or suitable research methods to use which makes the book usable for all fields of study. Being as a student in my beginning of my PhD I found the book very helpful and I think I have better understanding of my priorities for my PhD study.

The PhD Companion: Lacking, but (kind of) entertaining

I purchased this book and another called How to get a PhD by Phillips and Pugh, which was far superior to this book; thus, I don't recommend buying it.

It's organized chronologically, as if it's taking the reader through the emotional/intellectual/experiential ups and downs of the PhD student. This organization works well and reads easily. The authors adopted a chatty and informal tone that doesn't sit so well. Further, their observations, with only a handful of exceptions, seemed not far beyond the realm of common sense. They've included a nubmer of historical anecdotes which are interesting, but not particularly helpful.

If you're looking for a solid introduction to and guide through PhD studies that is serious and packed with useful information, I'd avoid this volume.

This book is for EVERY woman out there! Whether single, courting, engaged, married, widowed, divorced, and contemplating whether you are called to be married! This book has truly opened my eyes to see the truth about "The One". This book isn't your typical "I want to find me a man. How do I get him" book. This book is for the women who desire to HONOR God in holiness, righteousness,& purity in their heart, in their lives, & in their relationship. It amazes me how so many of the questions we as women face were answered in this book. She gave different testimonies, scriptures, points of view, scenarios, and even heart-wrenching questions. Now, if you are getting this book because you are trying to see if it is going to pat you on the back and make you feel good, trust me, you may not get it. You may get your answer and you may not. But this book is a NEED to have and not just a WANT to have. This book is CENTERED around TRUTH! Biblical truth to be exact, & sometimes, the truth hurts. However, Jesus made it clear that the Truth sets us free- that Truth is HIM! I am grateful I read this book. I loved it so much that I am telling EVERYONE about it!!!! I've always known Karolyne Roberts to be a woman of God and to have God's Holy Spirit dwelling within her. After reading this book, it was only a solid confirmation of what was already evident: that she hears from The Lord and she writes when He prompts her to. This book was written for me, married women, single men, the widowed, all people. Her release came at a time in my life in which God was shifting and doing a whole lot of revealing. "The One" Revealed aided me in this huge change in my life, as well as comforted, encouraged, sharpened and equipped me to keep pressing forward despite the changes one may experience in God's plan for their life. Each chapter is filled with God's love, grace, correction and discipline and is literally the best book I've ever read in...awhile. Pray before purchasing and put on some steel-toed boots. You'll need them. Devour each page with an open heart, prepare to be challenged and then go purchase a copy for a friend. It's literally that amazing!

"The One Revealed" deserves more than 5 stars, because it has made an eternal impact on myself and other women, which is what truly matters. I was blown away by Karolyne's book. No matter what season you are in - whether you are single, dating/courting, married, divorced, widowed, searching, dissatisfied, confused, content... this book has the wisdom, encouragement and insight you need at this moment in your life. Karolyne's book doesn't focus so much on asking God for your "Boaz" but seeking God's kingdom and righteousness while believing that all that is in the will of God shall be added to you in His timing. I have so much clarity as to how I should be led by the Holy Spirit and not by my feelings when it comes to relationships. Seriously, every woman should pick this book up and read it if you are looking for answers to questions about God, love, dating, marriage, and the like. As you read this book, you will come to find that it echoes a powerful truth: Jesus is the One, our One and only. It is only through Him that you will know how to date, marry and love the one he has chosen to join you in marriage. Whether it is in His will for you to marry or not, we must be devoted to seeking the One daily and becoming "the one" that we are waiting for, which Karolyne highlights so eloquently in this book.
