A great workbook packed with lots and lots of facts

'Earth & Sky' by Education.com is a workbook full of science and math practice sheets. There is a lot of information packed into a scant 112 pages.

The book is broken up into 4 sections and an answer key. The sections answer basic and some not so basic science questions, like why the sky and ocean are blue or why people blush. You'll learn how honey is made and how a pearl is formed. Potential and kinetic energy is covered as well as the six different forms of energy. Land forms are covered including the rock cycle and weathering. The final section before the answer key is about geography math. It's a bit different from the rest of the book, so it was initially confusing. You are given a series of questions that are based on tables, but the tables are near the back of the section.

The pages have colorful illustrations and a good layout. There are items to fill out on just about every page. The information is concise, but accessible. Every section has a certificate of achievement that can be filled out. It's clearly aimed at 3rd graders on the front cover, and I was pretty impressed with the broad level of information that is given in such a book.

This book is wonderful!! Especially for parents who are not great at science themselves. This book covers a plethora of topics in a easy to understand way. This book is divided into five sections, one being the answer section. It covers simple questions, begins complex questions, weather, studies the earth as far as elements and different kinds of land structures. It even has geography and a little math. The math/word problems in the geography section are somewhat hard, and require looking up for answers in some cases, or flip to the end of the book for some help with answers.

I love the questions at the end to ensure that the material is sinking in. There are activities throughout the book, very simple, with materials that you have in your home. There are a few word games that ensure your child is learning. This is a great addition to any child who loves science, needs help with science or is homeschooled. It is easy to use and engaging for parents and children alike.

Short and Focused

This is a great intro to OWIN and Katana. While not a reference to the full capabilities of these MS technologies, this provides useful, well focused, examples. The writing is clear and easy to follow -- usually signs the author has a good grasp on his source material. The fact this the only book dedicated to OWIN at this time simply adds to its value (which at the Kindle price it's already an excellent deal). Nicely done!

The content is good, but the formatting in the Kindle edition is *really* shoddy: deeply nested LINQ expressions in Times New Roman with all indentation removed. Trying to decipher the formatting is distracting from understanding the otherwise excellent content.

Parts of this book provide useful information, and sometimes good entertainment. This was tarnished by a long, largely off-topic rant about global warming issues, and, at least in this e-book version, some really annoying (and sadly consistent) formatting problems. I cannot recommend it for general readers, but if you are looking to learn some useful tips on paleontology and don't mind dealing with those foibles, then you may still want to give it a look.

All citizens of the United States should read this book, and many outside the US could well use it. It exposes the grim truth about American agriculture: it is massively distorted by the subsidy system. Subsidies go almost exclusively to large-scale producers of a handful of basic commodities, largely maize (41% of all), cotton, wheat, sugar and soybeans. This greatly lowers the price of these items, distorting the market. One result, explored in detail in the book, is unhealthy diet; sweeteners--high-fructose corn syrup and sugar--are artificially cheap, and thus find their way into almost everything. Processed starches and soybean oil are also artificially cheap. So are meat and dairy products, which get some subsidies and benefit from artificially cheap feeds. Americans wind up with poor health, because the "bad" foods are cheaper and also because the subsidy-enriched giant agribusiness and food processing firms advertise heavily. (The book does not mention it, but one particularly annoying form this advertising takes is paying Fox News personalities to make constant, scathing, derogatory remarks about anyone who cares about good diet--calling such persons "food nazis" and making racist remarks about Michelle Obama when she shows an interest in better foods.)
Another point about subsidies is that they block change. The giant subsidized interests can get research steered to their wants. They also block new initiatives, and of course they can outcompete any new or different farming, because the playing field is so far from level. We are thus locked into an increasingly dinosauric rural economy, with a few giant producers committed to an agricultural style that is less and less sustainable.
Oil is also heavily subsidized, and the combination of subsidized oil and subsidized commodities make food cheap in the short run--but in the medium term (let alone the long term) there will be trouble. Oil is already moving up in price, though "peak oil" is not yet. When that peak comes, oil prices will rapidly increase, and farming will have to change quite dramatically.
The environment also suffers. Conservation funding, already ridiculously small in the US, is routinely cut by Congress from funds allocated in farm bills. This is not just a matter of charismatic fauna; we are talking about the basics--soil, water, plant cover, and protection of prime farmland from urban sprawl. At the rates of urbanization that prevailed before the 2008 crash, California would have lost its last farm around 2050. As the book points out, simple national security should make us stop this.
Democrats who love government spending and Republicans who love even the worst big businesses have long agreed on funding this depressing farm economy, and only the more sincere of the libertarians (i.e., those who are not just Republicans who do dope but love subsidies) have really critiqued the farm bills. Imhoff does not tip us off about his politics; his excellent collection of proposed solutions include some libertarian ones and some more governmental ones.
This is one issue that could very well bring down the United States. Yet it remains obscure. Everyone needs to read this book.

Douglas Stuart is Professor of Old Testament and Chair of the Division of Biblical Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He holds the B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Among his earlier writings are Studies in Early Hebrew Meter, Old Testament Exegesis: A Primer for Students and Pastors, and Favorite Old Testament Passages.

Concise & to the point

I was studying Ezekiel seriously for the first time in an online class and needed a commentary. I was surprised a little at how few commentaries on this book! However, The Preacher's Commentary -Volume 20: Ezekiel was exactly what I was looking for. Gave a nice overview and some depth to each chapter. Puts it the historical setting and did bring to light stuff that for me was a little confusing before. I would recommend it for beginners to the writings of the prophets. The author doesn't go into great depth of the language, so if that is what you are looking for this may not be the commentary you are looking for. I did enjoy reading it and found it helpful.

The commentary is well written and gives a good overview of the contents of each chapter. It gives a good overall outline of each section. It is good for light study, but does not give enough material for an in depth verse by verse study of the book.

This commentary is very helpful in understanding Ezekiel. Ezekiel is a rather convoluted book with visions and warnings similar to Revelation. The Preacher's Commentary helped to sort out the various elements in clear, concise explanations.

About the Author
Marge Lial (late) became interested in math at an early age–it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often found their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology; trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. We dedicate the new editions of the paperback developmental math series to Marge in honor of her contributions to the field in which she helped thousands of students succeed.

When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics education or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and fifteen years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

A native Midwesterner, Terry McGinnis received her Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Iowa State University. She has taught elementary and middle school mathematics, and developed and implemented the curriculum used with her students. Terry has been involved in college mathematics publishing for over 20 years, working with a variety of authors on textbooks in developmental mathematics and precalculus. After working behind the scenes on many of the Lial/Hornsby textbooks and supplements for over 10 years, Terry joined Margaret Lial and John Hornsby in 2002 as coauthor of their developmental mathematics series that includes Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Introductory and Intermediate Algebra. When not working, Terry enjoys spinning at a local health club, walking, and reading fiction. She is the devoted mother of two sons, Andrew and Tyler.

RENT THIS BOOK

My college book store charges 215.00 to buy this book, and 150 to rent it. I rented it from Amazon for the entire semester and it only cost me 18.98 including tax and shipping. Can't beat that! And when the book arrived it looks pretty much new! Return shipping at the end of the semester is free. Best deal around for a college student!!

I can't recommend this book highly enough

This book is an outstanding treatment of basic algebra concepts. It is an efficient tool for learning, as most people learn by having concepts explained in a succinct way and then seeing the concepts applied in a number of examples. This book hits it out of the park in that regard. I teach for a university of students, many of whom have part-time jobs. Such learners can appreciate this book when compared to other more verbose, wandering tomes. This book stresses how to solve the problems using concepts just presented. There are opportunities for full chapter reviews (at the end of each chapter) and full reviews of the book up to various points at the end of each chapter (cumulative reviews). Answers to odd-numbered problems are located at the back of the book. Whether you are a self-learner or a student whose time is precious, I can't recommend this book highly enough.
