Indispensable for GRE prep, but the individual books only cost $33, vs. $38 for this bundle.
By Brian R. McElroy
I'm a Harvard Grad, 99% GRE Scorer (337, 168Q / 169V, 5.5 AWA) and GRE private tutor since 2002. I can strongly recommend these official ETS guides for anyone serious about performing well on the GRE, but the 3 individual books included in the Super Power Pack are currently more affordable to purchase separately ($33) than through this bundle ($38).

Official Guide to the GRE, 3rd Edition: The Official Guide to the GRE General Test, Third Edition
Official Verbal Practice Questions, 2nd Edition, Volume 1: Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions, Second Edition, Volume 1 (Test Prep)
Official Quantitative Practice Questions, 2nd Edition, Volume 1: Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions, Second Edition, Volume 1 (Test Prep)

Ultimately, you will need these 3 books for an optimal GRE preparation, because the included practice tests / questions are the real deal. The fact that Princeton and Kaplan GRE preparation books--full of fluff, filler, willful ignorance of the GRE official materials, and typos--sell better than the GRE Super Power Pack is an absolute shame. After many years of receiving scant practice material from ETS, I am relieved to say that ETS has now provided enough official materials for a nearly full preparation for the GRE, so the purchase of other learning and strategy guides can be kept to a minimum.

I say "nearly" full because 2 CATs (computer adaptive tests) is not enough. The physical books are a nice asset, as are the 2 (included) paper-based practice tests, but for a computer adaptive test, you have to spend lots of time preparing on a computer. For this purpose I prefer to spend an additional $39 to purchase 6 (synthetic) GRE Computer Adaptive Tests (CATs) from Manhattan Prep. No, they are not real GREs, but they are still helpful for practice with the computer-adaptive format, and are of higher quality than most other imitation GREs. You can also try one test for free before committing through the Manhattan website (google "GRE Practice Test & Free Score Analysis - Manhattan Prep").

It is worth noting that this is primarily a book for practice, not learning. The answer explanations in these books can sometimes be severely lacking, or in the case of the PowerPrep tests, nonexistent, which is part of why hiring a professional tutor can be helpful. However, for the disciplined and resourceful self-studier, these three books, the 2 (invaluable!) PowerPrep II CATs, a good vocab guide or two, a strategy guide (avoid Kaplan and Princeton--I prefer Manhattan, Magoosh, Barron’s and McGraw-Hill) and some third-party CATs should do the trick.

For those of you unfamiliar with the GRE, here is some basic information about the exam:

-The GRE is primarily a computer-based test. Only 2% of test-takers choose the paper option.
-You can take the test up to 5 times a year, and every 21 days. Scores are valid for 5 years.
-GRE has an option called “ScoreSelect” that allows you to select only your best score and send that score only to the graduate programs of your choice.
-The GRE offers a diagnostic service that allows you to view your performance on the test, including which questions you answered correctly/incorrectly, and how long they took you to answer. You cannot see the actual questions, however.

STRUCTURE OF THE COMPUTER-BASED GRE:

1) “Analyze an Issue” Writing Task - 30 mins
2) “Analyze an Argument” Writing Task - 30 mins
3) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*
4) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*

(10-MINUTE BREAK)

5) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*
6) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*
7) Verbal or Quantitative Section - 30 or 35 mins*

*The order of the Quant and Verbal sections varies. One of the Verbal or Quant sections will be unscored, or a research section.

The GRE is scored from 130 to 170 in both sections, for a total of 340 points. An average score is about 300/340, and you will receive your multiple-choice score immediately after the test is completed. Because there are 40 questions in both Quant and Verbal, you can essentially add the number 130 to your number of questions answered correctly to get an estimate of your final score in each section. Google “2016-2017 GRE Guide to the Use of Scores - Table 1A” for more information.

HOW TO USE THE FREE GRE POWERPREP SOFTWARE FROM ETS:

Test preview tool: This will allow you to try some practice questions as well as two essays.

Timed Practice Test #1: This is your first official GRE practice test, and should be taken at the beginning of your preparation to establish a baseline score.

Timed Practice Test #2: This is your only other real GRE practice test, so save it for the last few weeks of your preparation, as an unbiased, trustworthy measure of your progress.

Untimed Practice Test: This is exactly what it sounds like, but I don’t recommend taking it because it’s exactly the same as Practice Test #1. After you’ve taken Practice Test #1, however, feel free to use the Untimed Test for additional practice on the tricky ones.

The test preview tool is simply meant to help get you familiar with the test and software interface, not to mimic the actual timing of the test. The test preview tool provides 7 verbal questions in 30 minutes, which is 4.3 minutes per question, and 11 quantitative questions in 35 minutes, which is 3.1 minutes per question. By comparison, on the actual GRE, you only have 1.5 minutes per question on both the Quant and Verbal sections.

To take a diagnostic test, click “Timed Practice Test 1” or “Timed Practice Test 2.”

There is a row of buttons at the bottom of the software that says “Start Test / Resume Test / Review Answers:”

Start Test = resets any old tests (WARNING! Be very careful not to click this button by accident--many students have made this mistake) and starts a new test. Because pressing just one wrong button on this test can delete all of your previous results, I recommend taking frequent screenshots, especially of your review screen, which lists all of your correct and incorrect responses. For your screenshots, use either the "Print Screen" (Windows Key + PrtScn) button on a PC or (Shift + Command + 3) on a Mac.

Resume Test = pick up the last test from where you left off.

Review Answers = review your performance on the test, section by section (you cannot go back once you've completed a section without exiting and reviewing again).
--------------------------------------

In-between Timed Practice Tests #1 and #2 is the best time for students to work through the Official GRE Super Power Pack (these books), which consists of approximately 600 more real GRE questions for practice, along with (moderately helpful) answer explanations and learning sections.

the main book is the most helpful because it explains everything. Overall it is good because it is questions that are the most similar to what will be on the GRE, since it is made by the test makers. However it is best for practice but not so much for learning new materials. It is essential however so i would recommend buying at least the main book.

Do You Speak American?, by Robert MacNeil, William Cran

Is the growing influence of Spanish threatening to displace English in the United States? Are America's grammatical standards in serious decline? Has the media saturation of our culture homogenized our speech?

These and other questions catapulted Robert MacNeil and William Cran, coauthors of the language classic The Story of English, on a journey that took them around the country in search of answers. Do You Speak American?, the companion volume to a PBS special, is the tale of the surprising discoveries they made while interviewing a host of native speakers and observing everyday verbal interactions across the country. Examining the histories and controversies surrounding both written and spoken American English, MacNeil and Cran address highly emotional anxieties and assumptions about our language-and offer some unpredictable responses.

With insight and wit, MacNeil and Cran bring us a compelling follow-up to The Story of English that is at once a celebration and a potent study of our singular language.

From Publishers Weekly
The English language is not a thing but a process, not an archaic institution but an experiment that is constantly evolving and re-invigorating itself. According to language experts MacNeil and Cran, no one should understand this better than Americans who, steeped in a culture of diversity, are uniquely equipped to appreciate the exciting, colorful and democratic nature of language. Although not all Americans appreciate this vibrancy-many prominent linguists are found bemoaning the state of English, horrified that people still do not understand the difference between who and whom-the evidence of an ever-changing language is indisputable, from the New York Times printing the word "sleazoid" in a column to the Oxford English Dictionary adding "blogger" to its latest edition. To better understand the diversity of American English, the authors embark on a fascinating journey across the United States, studying the conversations of Boston natives and rural Texans, inner-city blacks and valley-girl teenagers. The result is an exhilarating celebration of the ways that Americans express themselves and a testament to the indestructible power of language, whether one is using "correct" grammar or not. Traditional linguists might not approve of the way modern Americans are talking, but they will never be able to stop the English language from moving forward and, as this book successfully proves, there is nothing more American than that.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Immigration, migration, class distinction, and mass media are among the tectonic forces shaping and reshaping the language we don't speak with anything approaching universality around North America. The authors take readers on an accessible, energetic, and insightful trip along the Eastern seaboard, down South, out to California, and to some cities in between in the company of several academic linguistics folks who offer explanations that readers don't necessarily see coming. Black English and the role of Spanish in contemporary America each get separate chapters. Americanisms like "beatnik," regionalisms like "pop," and localisms like "yinz" are admired as gems our constantly evolving language continues to press into being, and how American language is passed between generations–or fails to pass–is brought to light. Teens who already love language will take to this book with enthusiasm. Students who aren't in the habit of thinking critically about why we talk the way we do can be introduced to it through the pieces most relevant to them. And there's something relevant to everyone here, whether you talk with or without "r"s or sound just like the kids a thousand miles down the road.–Francisca Goldsmith, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Booklist
This is a companion volume to a PBS television series of the same name as well as a sequel to The Story of English (1986), also made into a television series. The authors deliver a surprisingly lively and compelling exploration of American English. Whether talking to crab fishermen in Maryland or country-and-western singers in Tennessee, the authors discover that regional dialects are thriving despite the uniformity of our national tastes in clothing, fast-food chains, and movies. Challenging language elitists, such as critic John Simon, who think grammatical standards are disappearing and that television and radio are homogenizing our speech, the authors show how mobility, immigration, and racial and ethnic mixing are rapidly and profoundly changing the language. One prediction: such diversity in our language may produce more tolerance and appreciation of American speech and less stereotyping. Expressive quotes are often used to make key points; the title comes from a comment by Bono, lead singer of U2, after being fined by the FCC for swearing. This is colorful, witty, and insightful commentary on American speech patterns. Joanne Wilkinson

Good, but thin
By Jon Hunt
"Do You Speak American?" is another fine contribution by Robert MacNeil and William Cran, coauthors of "The Story of English". As this is a companion book to the televised series this recent offering does not stand alone but serves as the program's enhancement.

Those of us who have followed Mr. MacNeil through his many journeys around the world in search of the ways English is enriched will find worthy chapters in "Do You Speak American?" Highlighted areas include the South, Hispanics and Black English....these three chapters encompass close to half of the book. Mr. MacNeil delivers his findings in his usual straightforward, buttoned-down Nova Scotia style. That isn't to say there isn't any humor...there is...but his earnestness keeps everything on track.

My disappointment in "Do You Speak American?" is that it doesn't cover enough ground. While "The Story of English" was a major undertaking, this seems puny by comparison. It was as if the book was written almost in haste to accommodate the tv program (which, by the way, is better than the book). The north and the midwest get far less attention so the book has an unbalanced feeling to it. That said, the portions that the authors delve into most carry a certain fascination and the narrative style to which we have been accustomed is as flawless as ever. The final chapter is an odd one, but an important one....how computers take on their own "language" and how that affects us. Some of the best (and most humorous) paragraphs in the book deal with the speech-recognition system in BMWs and the reaction of owners to it.

Perhaps Mr. MacNeil and Mr. Cran will do a follow-up to "Do You Speak American?" I hope they do. There's so much more to discover and these coauthors are just the men to continue looking into the many facets of "American English".

An interesting read!
By Armchair Interviews
Language is not constant. It is continually evolving with cultural and ethnic influences impacting a region's speech. Authors Robert MacNeil and William Cran have examined the English language through interviewing native speakers and observing the verbal interactions of people across the country.

I found Do You Speak American? fascinating. As a native speaker from the Midwest, it always surprises me when I'm traveling that people can pinpoint where I'm from. Being from the Midwest, I always thought that I didn't have an "accent." Wrong! My speech patterns, class, choice of words, word order, pronunciation (vowel changes) and perhaps the media's affect on speech, give me away.

The authors' journey across the country, studying regional conversations, is interesting and enlightening and offers explanations that might surprise the reader. I particularly enjoyed the sections on teaching computers to speak American; the one on Hispanic immigration and its impact on American language; and the section on bad-mouthing black English.

While Do You Speak American? is not an in-depth study, it is a wonderful beginning for those who are interested in the subject.

Armchair Interviews says: If you enjoy words and are curious about how Americans speak, you'll enjoy Do You Speak American?

an excellent, excellent book!... substantiated... current... upbeat...
By James Neville
I read this book because I am fascinated by words and dialects and how (some) linguistics experts can tell where you grew up just from the way you speak.

"Do You Speak American" satisfied my craving to learn more about dialect in the United States but it went WAY beyond my expectations.

In addition to presenting and discussing a FASCINATING map of major dialect regions and changes in the U.S., this book addresses two key current social issues: The (unfounded) phobia that Spanish will take over from English as the dominant language of the United States, and the (still valid) issue that even as "African American English" contributes to our culture, it separates many kids from economic mainstream access through linquistic prejudice (e.g., "if you sound like THAT you must be DUMB")

The book doesn't stop there but continues addressing MORE fascinating topics including the origins of "Valley Girl/Surfer Dude" California dialects (like, totally!) and computer speech recognition efforts by BMW and Microsoft.

I found the overall tone of the book UPBEAT. The research findings and interpretations presented show it's quite possible and quite HUMAN to be "bilingual" in DIALECTS as well as languages. So that we can maintain our language-based identity (where we grew up) AND claim our stake in the mainstream economy.

This is the central document showing the heuristics that real-life traders use to manage their affairs, how people who do rather than talk have done things. Twenty years from now, it will still be fresh. There is no other like it."
—NASSIM N. TALEB, former derivatives trader, author of The Black Swan, and professor, NYU-Poly

"It is difficult enough to develop a method that works. It then takes experience to believe what your method is telling you. But the toughest task of all is turning analysis into money. Q & A with Jack D. Schwager, author of Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders

More than twenty years have passed since the first edition of this book was released. Is it as relevant today as it was then? Absolutely. Markets may change and the specific techniques or systems that work best may change, but the underlying core principles that lead to trading success stay the same. And there is a good reason for that. Through all periods, market price moves reflect some combination of underlying fundamentals and human behavior. Since human nature doesn't change, the market's basic behavioral patterns don't change either. I believe that every conclusion I reached about the factors important to trading success in the first edition remains equally valid today. Perhaps the best testament to the continued relevance of Market Wizards in today's markets is that so many of the managers I meet who read the original edition early in their careers make it required reading for new traders in their organization. Has trading fundamentally changed with the rise of the quants and algorithmic traders? The growing role of algorithmic trading may have eliminated some market inefficiencies as sources of profitable strategies, and it may even have impacted the efficacy of some trading systems, but I don't believe it has changed fundamental market behavior. The same basic concepts that are critical to trading success remain as valid now as they were a generation ago when computerized trading was in its infancy. What are these basic concepts? Well that's what this book is all about. But to offer one example, I believe that developing a trading methodology that fits your personality, as opposed to seeking someone else's approach, is an absolutely critical element to succeeding as a trader. Why do most traders fail? There are many reasons. They seek easy answers. They listen to "experts" and chase trading fads instead of doing the hard work of developing their own methodology. They focus almost all their energy on determining trade entry points and all but ignore the more critical questions of trade exit and risk management. They listen to other people. These are a few of the reasons. Readers will find a lot more in the book. Which trader interview in the book has been the most popular? Readers will often tell me that a certain chapter was their favorite and by far the most important in improving their own trading. The interesting thing is that they always seem to mention a different trader. There is no consensus. Different readers will find different things in the book important. They will relate to different traders. It all goes back to the importance of finding your own approach in the market. Have the interviews you did for Market Wizards been important to your own trading? The interview and writing process has helped solidify in my own mind the principles that are important to trading success. At times, it has also had a very specific influence. A great example occurred last summer. At the time, the stock market was approaching the high end of a long-term trading range, and for a variety of reasons, I expected the rally to fail and was positioned on the short side of stock index futures. Then the government released an extremely bearish employment report. It was so negative that commentators couldn't even cite one offsetting bullish consideration, as they usually do. The market initially sold off sharply in response--"perfect," I thought of my trade--but by the end of the day, it nearly recovered the entire loss, ending the week near the recent high. From the perspective of a short, this was terrible price action. I thought I was in trouble. I was prepared to cover most of my position when the market opened on Sunday night. On Sunday night, however, the market opened lower. I immediately thought of Marty Schwartz's advice in this book: "If you're very nervous about a position overnight, and especially over the weekend, and you're able to get out at a much better price than you thought when the market trades, you're usually better off staying with the position." I did, and Schwartz's insight saved me a lot of money, as the market proceeded to move sharply lower in the ensuing weeks.

Magicians of Wall Street
By O. Halabieh
As the title indicates this book consists of a series of interviews with some of the best most successful traders in the world.

Not only does this book cover a wide variety of trading techniques, it also covers a wide variety of markets as well (treasuries, futures, commodities etc.). The book also sheds light on the personal traits and characteristics of successful traders. By reading the different interviews one starts to see the commonalities but also the differentiators between them. It is very intriguing to read one very successful trader present opposite techniques than the next trader being interviewed.

A must read for any serious investor. This book is filled with wisdom from start to finish - for both novice and advanced traders. One will also find that much of this wisdom applies to any career.

Below are excerpts from this book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "You also have to follow your own light. Because I have so many friends who are talented traders, I often have to remind myself that if I try to trade their way, or on their ideas, I am going to lose. Every trader has strengths and weaknesses...As long as you stick to your own style, you get the good and bad in your own approach. When you try to incorporate someone else's style, you often wind up with the worst of both styles. I've done that a lot."

2- "Don't ever feel that you are very good. The second you do, you are dead."

3- "What are the traits of a successful trader? The most important is discipline - I am sure everyone tells you that. Second, you have to have patience; if you have a good trade on, you have to be able to stay with it. Third, you need courage to go into the market, and courage comes from adequate capitalization. Fourth, you must have a willingness to lose; that is also related to adequate capitalization. Fifth, you need a strong desire to win."

4- "I have two basic rules about winning in trading as well as in life: (1) If you don't bet, you can't win. (2) If you lose all your chips, you can't bet."

5- "The stock market is neither efficient nor random. It is not efficient because there are too many poorly conceived opinions; it is not random because strong investor emotions can create trends."

6- "I don't see how you can invest in American steel without understanding what is going on in Malaysian palm oil. As I explained before, it is all part of a big, three-dimensional puzzle that is always changing."

7- "Although the styles of the traders are very different, many common denominators were evident:

1- All those interviewed has a driving desire to become successful traders - in many cases, overcoming significant obstacles to reach their goals.

2- All reflected confidence that they could continue to win over the long run. Almost invariably, they considered their own trading as the best and safest investment for their money.

3- Each trader had found a methodology that worked for him and remained true to that approach. It is significant that discipline was the word most frequently mentioned.

4- The top traders take their trading very seriously; most devote a substantial amount of their waking hours to market analysis and trading strategy.

5- Rigid risk control is one of the key elements in the trading strategy of virtually all those interviewed.

6- In a variety of ways, many of the traders stressed the importance of having the patience to wait for the right trading opportunity to present itself.

7- The importance of acting independent of the crowd was a frequently emphasized point.

8- All top traders understand that losing is part of the game.

9- They all love what they are doing."

Lessons between the lines
By Winston Kotzan
A read through Market Wizards will magically transform the way you think about making money in the market. This is not an academic book presenting theories on trading. Market Wizards allows you to learn from the experience of the pros, showing you the thinking that went into their strategies to make them a success. Most of these traders started with nearly scratch and compounded their winnings to millions. Now through the eyes of Jack Schwager, decades of lessons learned from trial and error are handed to you within this small book.

To get the full benefit, it is necessary to read from beginning to end. What strikes me most is both the depth and breadth covered by the interviews. The book is divided into several segments, covering futures, equities, investors who follow economy-wide trends, and a little bit of psychological analysis. The key to learning from this book is linking the ideas from all the separate interviews together.

By the end, you will see subtle differences in the thinking behind futures, equities, and even stock option trading. Despite the various traders having a wide range of opinions and philosophies, you will find many commonalities in each interview. Though each trader used radically different methods, they all had a standardized set of rules that were followed and led to success. Most of these rules involved some benchmark for cutting losses.

Interestingly enough, this book is not written or condensed in anyway. It consists of outright transcripts of interviews Schwager conducted with the actual traders. I believe this style kept each page exciting because it actually felt as if I was present during the interview.

This is one of the essential reads for any young or old person wanting to engage the trading field, whether as a part time endeavor or as a career. Study Market Wizards, and use the wisdom of its pages to your money-making advantage!

Interesting
By Jay
It's interesting to read for experienced traders. After you have made many mistakes trading some of what they say may help you realize they made the same mistakes. The only really take away after reading this is...1)learn from your mistakes 2)make rules and stick to them 3)update your rules if you find something works better.

Exceptionally well written, evocative stories...
By Nelson Aspen
I purchased a well worn, musty smelling paperback edition of this book published in 1967 and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful writing as well as the tactile sensation of thumbing my way through the cherished, yellowed pages. Brilliantly executed "tales of working class life and morals" are great to read--but none better than Chapter One about the Runner in the title. So well done, in fact, that my interest in the other stories quickly waned.

For reading pleasure, I highly recommend this collection. For runners, especially, Chapter One is worth the purchase price. Now I'm eager to see the Tom Courtenay movie version, which is apparently excellent, too.

"Yes I cry, but neither of us did anything about it, and that's the trouble".
By J C E Hitchcock
Alan Sillitoe was one of a number of young writers who emerged in the late fifties and sixties and who have become known as the "kitchen sink" school. (Other members of the group included the novelists Stan Barstow, John Braine, David Storey and Barry Hines and playwrights such as John Osborne and Shelagh Delaney). Their work was distinguished by a social-realist concentration of working-class life, often with a provincial setting.

This collection of short stories was published in 1959, a year after "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning", Sillitoe's first novel. All the stories are set, or partly set, in the author's home town of Nottingham. The title story is both the best-known in the collection and the longest. It takes the form of a first-person monologue by Smith (we never learn his first name), a teenager from a working-class Nottingham home who is sent to Borstal after being convicted of robbing a bakery. (A "Borstal", named after the Kentish village in which the first such institution was situated, was at this period a special prison for young offenders).

While in Borstal, Smith discovers a talent for long-distance running, and this brings him to the notice of the Governor, who takes a keen interest in sport as a means of rehabilitating young offenders, and he is entered in a cross-country race against other Borstals. (The Governor believes that for one of his inmates to win the race would bring prestige to his institution). Smith has a real talent for the sport and could easily have won the race, but quite deliberately chooses to lose it, stopping running just short of the finishing line to allow another runner to pass him. He does so as a deliberate gesture of contempt for the Governor and for the whole of the Establishment which he despises.

Sillitoe never expressly passes judgement on Smith's attitude to life, and some have certainly seen him as an admirable character, a working-class hero standing up to the System. In my view, however, Sillitoe simply allows Smith to condemn himself out of his own mouth; certainly, the author is critical of the British class system, but it seems to me that one of his criticisms is that it encourages distorted attitudes like Smith's, whose anti-Establishment stance is essentially an ideological justification for his own selfishness and criminality. One of the most striking aspects of his lengthy diatribe is that he never considers anyone other than himself; he certainly does not spare a thought for the baker he has robbed or for his other victims. His only friend is Mike, another delinquent youth who helps him carry out the robbery; they can think of nothing to do with their loot except to travel to the nearest seaside resort and spend it on gambling machines and cheap tarts. The "loneliness" of the title may refer to Smith's self-centredness; it is perhaps symbolic that he excels at a purely individual sport rather than those like football or rugby which demand teamwork and co-operation.

Loneliness and alienation are the themes of a number of the other stories in this volume. In "Uncle Ernest" a solitary, ageing and embittered veteran of World War I befriends two young girls who briefly bring a sense of meaning into his life, before he is warned off by the police, who suspect his motives. (Hysteria about paedophilia is clearly nothing new). "On Saturday Afternoon" tells the story of a young boy who witnesses a quiet, reclusive neighbour attempting to kill himself. In "Mr Raynor the Schoolteacher" the title character seems unable to form relationships with women except at a distance; his main preoccupation, which distracts him from his classes, is gazing from afar at the girls who work in the shop across the road from his classroom.

Even when Sillitoe's characters are able to form relationships they are often doomed to failure, leaving those characters even lonelier than before. The title character of "The Disgrace of Jim Scarfedale" is caught between the demands of his domineering, over-protective mother and those of his equally demanding wife, a middle-class Socialist for whom her preconceived ideas about working-class life turn out to be more congenial than the reality; after the inevitable breakdown of his marriage he ends up being arrested for indecently exposing himself to young girls.

"The Match" contrasts two married couples, a happily-married pair of newlyweds and the couple next door, trapped in a loveless and violent relationship; the title refers to the fact that the husband comes home and physically abuses his wife after watching his football team lose a game. Yet we cannot help feeling that once Mr and Mrs Lennox may have been as much in love as their neighbours, and cannot help wondering what the future might hold for young Fred and Ruby. "The Fishing Boat Picture" tells the story of a long-estranged middle-aged couple who have a chance of reconciliation yet fail to take it. "Yes I cry, but neither of us did anything about it, and that's the trouble".

A number of the stories are told from the perspective of a child and are set during Sillitoe's own childhood in the 1930s and 1940s. This allows him to draw on memories of hardship during the war and the depression, although the child's viewpoint enables him to bring a lighter touch to these stories, such as "Noah's Ark" or "The Decline and Fall of Frankie Buller". Even in "One Saturday Afternoon", with its subject-matter of suicide, Sillitoe is able to derive a certain amount of grim humour.

In many ways these stories reminded me of those written by Sillitoe's exact contemporary Stan Barstow (both were born in 1928), another chronicler of working-class life although in his case from the neighbouring county of Yorkshire rather than Nottinghamshire. Yet even though they describe similar social milieus there is, I think, a difference between them which explains why Sillitoe, unlike Barstow, is often numbered among the fifties literary grouping known as the Angry Young Men. Barstow's characters, including his most famous Vic Brown, often react to hardship or misfortune with stoicism and resilience; Vic even has ambitions to better himself socially, something which the likes of Uncle Ernest or Jim Scarfedale would regard as incomprehensible and Smith would regard as a sell-out to the System. The tone of Sillitoe's stories is more often a bleak, if sometimes defiant, anger and bitterness, occasionally relived by sardonic humour. Yet it is this very bleakness which gives them much of their emotional power.

Several standouts
By Tyler Smith
This is Sillitoe's best-known work, a collection of stories presumably drawn in large part from his working class life in Great Britain. The book's emphasis on gritty realism will not be everyone's cup of tea -- no pun intended -- but I found his prose clean, powerful and nearly free of sentimentality.
Sillitoe's sympathy for the working class is best demonstrated in the title story, narrated by a teen resident of a reform school whose voice vibrates with rebellion. The youth shows a keen awareness of his position within England's rigid class structure and has made a conscious decision to resist those whom he says have "the whip hand" over him. Sillitoe reveals the motivation for his protagonist's attitude in an understated but memorable scene in which the youth remembers finding his laborer father dead, blood spilled out of his consumptive body. The reader sees the boy's perception that his father's life has been used up by the system. In the story's surprising final turn, the youth -- who has become a champion runner for his school -- attempts in his own way to turn the tables on that system.
The book contains several other strong stories. "The Fishing-Boat Picture" is the bittersweet memoir of a failed marriage; it effectively dramatizes the sense of lost opportunity we feel when our most important human connections are broken. "Mr Raynor the School-Teacher" brings to life the stultifying atmosphere of a London public school classroom presided over by a jaded teacher whose only ambition is to keep his rebellious charges at bay so that he can drift in reverie. "The Decline and Fall of Frankie Buller" has the feeling of a memoir. The narrator describes his hardscrabble youth and subsequent escape from his environment. Frankie Buller is the symbol of the ruined youth he left behind: a boy who was once a giant among his playmates who has grown older without ever progressing spiritually or creatively. The narrator would never wish to be a Frankie Buller, but his words are permeated with the guilty tone of the survivor.
Not all of the stories succeed as admirably as these. Still, at his best, Sillitoe crafts the claustrophobic environments of his stories, often in the service of social criticism. His characters may long to escape the grays and blacks of their worlds, but the stories themselves offer no such escape for the reader.

Migrating to ASP.NET MVC with only previous experience in ASP.NET Web Forms. This book was exactly what I needed to get an idea how things are done in MVC in arthitectural design / UI wise.

saved me a lot of time reading this book firsr
By Kindle Customer
I am surprised to see only a couple of reviews. The content was perfect for evaluating recent .net options to learn for new Windows developers, even though that did not appear to be the target audience. As a professional working with populating a configuration management database using federation with aspx files and c#, this book is excellent for learning about why asp.net core and asp.net MVC should be considered going forward. This book has saved me a lot of time by presenting the pros and cons of the future direction of asp.net

Too deep for a novice, too shallow for a pro
By Amazon Customer
Nice book to catch up on some of Web Development trends. Thorough evaluation of ASP.NET MVC, WebAPI, ASP.NET Core: their pros and cons and how they stand against each other. Hands-on explanation of DDD and layered architecture (really deep!), UX and responsive design, Ajax and SignalR. Good review of Bootstrap features, short looks at SASS, LESS, Knockout, Mustache and HTML5, several more techs and services.
Wait, and that's all? IMHO, the title should be "Quick Guide to..." or "First Glance at..." as the book is quite shallow in most of named Modern Web technologies and doesn't even mention many other trendy things. And at the same time it's not for novices: reader should be familiar with Web and MS stack already.
