Review of Nuclear and Radiochemistry

The second edition of this text is one that has been utilized in many graduate programs. In fact, the author of this review has utilized it not only as a student but as a teaching text in several courses.

No single text contains all that is needed for an immense field of study such as radiochemistry. However, it should also be pointed out that the weakness in this text is that although it does a thorough job of covering "nuclear basics" it is very short on the "radiochemistry" side of the field. Having said this, it is a must have text for any serious student in the field.

The third edition also includes an account of discovery of the elements beyond uranium. This section is a first hand account by Glenn T. Seaborg and Walter D. Loveland the team of Nobel Laureates that lead to their discovery. Both Glenn Seaborg-an active participant in the discovery of transuranium elements-and leading chemist, and Walter Loveland, provide a unique inside account of the discovery of these elements as well as the first definitive look at their chemical, physical, and nuclear properties.

Good Book

Like many textbooks, this book covers a wide-range of applications and material. It's definitely helpful if you want a reference for a nuclear class, but can be difficult to read if you're using it for an introductory course. Overall, good book, and it's the one I go back to from time to time to clarify any questions I have. Freidlander was also an amazing guy to meet.

Great if your doing in-depth radiochemistry and nuclear chemistry work. My friend in the Navy said this book was pretty good a referrence study aid.

The Real Hitchhiker's Guide

I cannot believe the amount of time and attention to detail that went into this book. Perusing these pages, you will learn how to do just about everything...at least, everything that's truly useful when the chips are down. That's about the only way that I can describe the scope of this tome.
Wilderness survival techniques, aromatherapy, acupressure, meditation techniques, exercise programs, knot tying, and even jokes and magic tricks are just a few of the subjects described and amusingly and richly illustrated within these pages. The whole book adheres to an "ancient wisdom of the Orient" theme, and it's hard to tell whether "Zeek" (the author/illustrator) takes this seriously or not. It doesn't really matter, though, as the advice given is generally very useful. Some fringe topics are covered (the existence of "chi", enemas, fasting, etc.) but at least the author concedes that with health matters, it's best to seek the advice of professionals.
Keeping with the Asian wisdom theme, there is a strong focus in this book on the martial arts. As a martial artist myself, I appreciated this focus and hope that it will inspire readers to investigate a style or two with a qualified instructor. But one need not be a karateka to draw more than enough inspiration and information from these pages, on a wide variety of topics.
This fascinating, unusual book is jam-packed with detailed illustrations on every page. Put a copy on your coffee table or in the bathroom, and your guests are sure to take a genuine gem of wisdom home with them, if they don't take the whole book.

Imagine, if you will, that you are in the company of a man who has travelled the world, seen many things that are NOT in the guidebooks, been in the company of many people both great and small, taken a lot of hard knocks, learned much to prevent repeating any mistakes, and lived to tell about it.
This is the book he wrote.
Equal parts Boy Scout Handbook, Whole Earth Catalogue and "Junior Woodchuck Guidebook" (the impossably complete reference book that Donald Duck's nephews carried with them), with painstakingly detailed illustrations on each and every page, tinted with Oriental wisdom.
Just a sampling of the contents (with randomly chosen pages): "Asian secrets of walking stick combat", "A traveler's guide to self-hypnosis", "Rapid reference accupressure treatments", "Emergency entertainment for bored, whining or fighting kids", "Effective beauty treatments with simple natural ingredients", "How to survive disaster situations", "How to condition for martial art strikes", "Non-violent child control", "Simple and healthy vegetarian recipes", "How to execute classic Kung Fu moves".
My friend, this is the one! From boating emergencies to avoiding a fight, from preventing food poisoning to physical fitness information, from natural therapies to preventing bedwetting, from Laws of the Sea to preventing skin problems, from tying knots to yoga postures....
I cannot say enough about this book. Buy it. Better yet, buy two and hide one copy. Someone is bound to "borrow" this from you.

Unique indeed, but usefull...

This book surprised me with its vast scope and humorous wit. This book is sort of like an encyclopedia of general, and not so general, knowledge. It has everything from the great importance of clear finger nail polish, general navigation, nuclear radiation treatment, tips about sex, how to fish, health (diet, vitamins, etc.) and on it goes. It is illustrated by the author, who in his own right is an enigma though a very intriguing man. This book has it all in a neat little package. This is not a sit-down-and-read kind of book, but one that should be used for reference. I pick a certain page and try to learn that particular entry for that day. It can broaden your general knowledge greatly.

My 9 year old enjoyed it more than my 6 year old seemed to

This is a cute book about different bugs and garden critters and different adventures they go on. My 9 year old enjoyed it more than my 6 year old seemed to. The only pictures are at the beginning of each chapter . It was easy to download straight to their kindles.

Not all books for kids can keep the attention enough ...

Not all books for kids can keep the attention enough long, at least not in the case of four years old nephew. this one, however "works" of course presentation is as well very important but in my small experience books for children, overall concept and pictures 'makes it or breaks it...' well done!

Rough Start With My Daughter

I got this book to read to my 6 year old daughter. Right away she was scared of the story because it introduces a rattle snake and mosquito characters. She is very much afraid of majority of bugs (not worms, she thinks those are cool) and I tried explaining that they were nice. After a little convincing, I was able to proceed with the story.

The Pros
~ My 6 yr old ended up liking this book.
~ The stories are nice and short. It holds kids attention. I found that even my near 2 year old would sit and listen to me read one of the short stories.
~ The majority of the characters are enjoyable. I found my oldest talking about them after.
~ I like the Just for Fun Activities. It makes reading the book more interactive.

The Negatives
~ Okay, maybe I'm just nitpicking a little bit, but the character of Snarky bothered me. He's grumpy, not snarky. It is revealed why he is like that, but it still bothered me.
~ The Story of Mac Apple also bothered me. He was not introduced in the first story like he should have been. It kind of throws you off.
~ This book needs a few full illustrations. My daughter was asking where the pictures were.

All in all, I am happy that I was able to share this story with my daughter. We both enjoyed it, and I can see myself reading it to her again.

Grade 6-9-In this sequel to The Seeing Stone (Scholastic, 2001), Crossley-Holland continues the story of 14-year-old Arthur in 1200. In the first book, Merlin gave him an obsidian stone; in it, the boy scries the life of his namesake, King Arthur. Now, he has left his foster family to live with Lord Stephen as his squire in training. He's just been told that his blood-father is his foster father's vile brother, and that his mother remains a mystery. He's determined to find her, as he trains to accompany Lord Stephen when he joins the crusades. His seeing stone reveals the parallel lives of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, the Knights of the Round Table, and other legendary characters that all mirror the mores and emotions of the protagonist's life. The book's length and the frequent shifts between both Arthurs' lives make for a challenging read despite the short 101 chapters that vividly depict 13th-century life with its chivalric codes, court etiquette of the highborn, and the hardscrabble lives of the lowborn. The action of the younger Arthur's life unfolds slowly, and it isn't until the end of the book that he finally begins his crusade by traveling to London where he learns that he's being sent to Venice, which sets the scene for the final book in the series. The character list at the beginning of the book is vital to keep track of all the characters and their relationships. Crossley-Holland's writing is lively, and King Arthur fans won't be disappointed.

Like many 13-year-olds, Arthur himself is in transition, moving from Caldicot Manor to Holt Castle, from page to squire, from boy to man. Now that he has learned his father's identity, he struggles to come to terms with that knowledge, and he resolves to discover who his mother is, as well. More mysterious still, his own identity has been jolted by the revelation of his parentage and confused by his strange affinity with Arthur-in-the-stone, who is like, yet unlike, himself. By the end of the novel, Arthur and Lord Stephen, to whom he is in service, have traveled to Champagne and sworn allegiance to Count Thibaud and his crusade to the Holy Land. Like many middle books of trilogies, this one revels in storytelling and character development without the need to introduce settings and characters, create a thundering climax, or tie up every loose strand of plot. Readers who devoured The Seeing Stone will happily fall under the spell of Arthur's first-person narrative again. Short, satisfying chapters telling of events in his life are again interspersed with vivid tales of what he sees in the stone given him by Merlin: traditional stories of King Arthur unfolding, fresh and dramatic, for him and for readers as well. Nineteen-year-old Biles, Olympic gold medalist and the most decorated U.S. gymnast of all time, takes readers along her journey to the podium in this memoir. After spending her early childhood in and out of foster care, Biles was adopted by her biological grandparents. She began her gymnastics training at the age of six after a field trip to Bannon’s Gymnastix, where the coaches quickly discovered that she “had what it took to go all the way.” Biles describes not only her gymnastics training and career but also her personal life, including her grandmother’s death, the difficult decisions she made in order to balance school and gymnastics, her “bratty period” in her early teens, and her love for her car, with its zebra-print interior. In recent years, Biles has won three consecutive world championship titles followed by her team gold and individual wins at the 2016 Olympics. Biles’s narration is effervescent, showing her to be, as her brother says, “a goofy and down-to-earth kid.” The tone is conversational and includes casual phrases such as “if you can’t already tell” and “just kidding.” She expresses appreciation for her family, friends, teammates, and coaches and frequently credits God and her faith for her success. Simone Biles is an American artistic gymnast. She was part of the gold medal-winning team dubbed the Final Five at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, winning gold in vault, floor & individual all-around events. She also won the bronze medal for the balance beam during these Olympics. Biles is a three-time world all-around champion & world floor champion, two-time world balance beam champion, and four-time United States national all-around champion.

Loved it!

So inspirational. I can't understand why she didn't thank Aly personally in the acknowledgments. The book tells of her life's triumphs and setbacks as well as life lessons she learned along the way. Finished this in one day. Couldn't put it down.

A Fascinating look backstage at the world of competitive gymnastics and a happy book to read.

A fascinating look backstage at the world of competitive gymnastics through the eyes of a world champion. i found it interesting to read about her childhood, her family, and the earliest beginnings of her interest in gymnastics, and to lear about her coaches and the intense training regimen it took to achieve the skills she achieved. It opened my eyes to a whole world I was unfamiliar with. The book is well-written and easy to read. Simone is an exceptionally gifted young woman who takes a real joy in her career as an athlete and also enjoys her family and friends. it made me happy to read about her and her accomplishments.

Straight from the heart

To say that this book was amazing and truly inspirational is an understatement. This book is for all ages: kids, teens, adults.
I want to read it again and again and I will continue to take a look at it whenever I need some sort of inspiration in my life. This young woman is younger than me yet she inspires me so much. I laughed, cried and cheered reading this book. I have so, so much admiration for Simone. God willing, she will continue to break barriers and continue to be greater.

I am a fan of gymnastics but I haven't always followed it outside of the Olympics because no offense but the girls personalities are a bit too cold (for my liking). I understand this is required of their sport and this is no criticism of these young women who devote so much time and sacrifice so much for the sport but the main reason I am bringing this up is because Simone made me fall in love with gymnastics all over again. She by far has the best personality I have ever seen from someone of her caliber , notoriety and talent; I say this as someone who follows various sports a lot. She is VERY bubbly, energetic, fun, giggly, selfless and most importantly extremely humble.I know a lot of people who don't even have a 10th of her talent who are very big headed but Simone is just a normal young woman who just happens to be extremely, extremely gifted.

I named my review " straight from the heart " because I was pleasantly surprised at how candid she was in this book; she was very honest. I really didn't expect that but I appreciated it. I love the fact that she is still extremely close with all her close friends with who she grew up with . There is so much more I can say about this book but I dont like to reveal spoilers in my reviews . I really encourage people to read this book and dare to be inspired by this phenomenal young woman . I knew who she was before the Olympics and reading this book made me even more of a fan of hers. I cant wait to see what the future holds for her.
