A Critic Criticizes Criticism

I was bamboozled into purchasing this book by a favorable Library Journal review, which said (I paraphrase) that Terry Eagleton in The Event of Literature makes difficult concepts in literary theory easy to understand. It's not that he doesn't try, but the material is too refractory: for me he failed more often than he succeeded. So I offer faint praise to admit that I probably got more out of Eagleton than I would have by going directly to the legion of critics he quotes ad nauseum (Stanley Fish, Jacques Derrida, Peter Lamarque, John Searle, and many others). Why he DOESN'T quote his great Oxbridge predecessor C.S. Lewis, a REAL literary critic, is quite beyond me, unless it is considered somehow shameful for a Marxist like Eagleton to do so. The one point all these more recent hacks seems to agree on -- that literature is what we as readers DECIDE TO TREAT AND READ AS LITERATURE -- was made FAR MORE CLEARLY and compellingly in Lewis' wonderful An Experiment In Criticism (1960). Read THAT if you never buy this or any other work of literary criticism.

As my title indicates, Eagleton frequently argues with the critics he quotes, pointing out their absurdities, omissions, contradictions, etc., which is certainly a valuable work. That includes the YOUNGER Terry Eagleton: while he still thinks literature has no "essence," he has come to believe that literary writing has some or all of these five characteristics -- it is fictional; it has moral content; it uses figurative language; it is not practical; and it is highly valued as writing.

Also insightful (to me) was his contention that what an author means as fiction may be read as true, and vice versa. It warmed my heart on page 110 to read that Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes can be read (primarily IS READ now) as FICTION. I ALWAYS thought it was! I NEVER believed actual people could live in conditions that degrading, sordid and abusive.

This textbook is amazing. Tons of interesting case studies with follow ups. An awesome and useful appendix filled with all the prefixes,suffixes, and root words. I only rented this for a medical terminology class but I think I might be purchasing it in the future.

Right-brain meets Algebra

This book is an excellent introduction to Algebra. I hesitate to even call this book an introduction because it's much more than that-the understanding it provides ends up opening up some pretty deep concepts. Trust me, to actually understand "why" makes the doing of something a whole lot easier.

For those of us who are "right brained" (tending towards intuitive, creative, artistic, empathetic), math can be a harrowing experience if you are without the proper tools. To look at the laundry list of formulas, rules, exceptions, etc that don't seem to make any logical sense can be highly frustrating for the right-brained among us, who tend to extrapolate how we do things from logical observations then create our own ways to solve problems (in order for this to work we need to know why something works or why it's true or false). This book breaks everything down to where when you are presented with a problem you know one or more of the following:

1. What your goal in the problem is.
2. Why you would need to know how to do this and how it can help you in real life.
3. How it works, so you can know how to apply the concepts intuitively rather than being limited to only things you've memorized from the list of magic formulae.
4. Why there are so many things that don't seem to make any sense at all (ie why you can't divide by zero) and what you should do about it.

The book is collaboration between Kenn Amdahl, (writer, poet, musician, and decided right-brainer) and Dr Jim Loats (a university mathematics professor), so you're getting the best of both worlds here.

I have always been pretty good at math through sheer brute force, but I've always hated it. Until now. Now I actually understand exactly what I'm doing and why and actually enjoy doing math problems the same way other right-brainers enjoy cross word puzzles or scrabble. Scary I know. Get this book.

A necessary adjunct to learning the craft

This should be the introduction to every book, or something very similar. it tells you the why of all the strange and wonderful things. I just did what they told me in class. It became clear in a lot of instances. But until I read this book a lot of things remained hazy. It would have been a lot better to have this in the beginning.

The style is fun and breezy. Bit too breezy at times. It covers the material quickly, but thoroughly. it is the book I wish I had in high school

Fantastic morale booster if you are planning to take math in college after years or decades on the outside

I read this book and understood it with out straining myself even after not cracking an Algebra book in decades. In high school I got straight A's in Algebra. But in college Calculus I struggled hard to get a passing C. I thought I was not smart enough to understand Calculus. Dr. Jim described me to a T in this book. He said the reason why so many students struggle with Calculus is because in high school they memorized a bunch of rules without understanding why, passing their exams, and never again thinking about Algebra. When I signed up for Calculus it had been over two years since I opened an Algebra book. To do Calculus you need to do the Algebra to solve the problems. Looking back it was amazing that I got a C on the course. Its been over 30 years since I got my degree in business. This book is an excellent starting point for getting back on the right track with math. Now I am fully pumped in knowing that I will not be wasting my time getting back into shape, mathematically speaking, before applying for admissions to pursue a second degree, this time in science. In high school, I found math easy, but I was not in love with it. In fact, I could not wait until I finished my required math courses, Algebra I&II, Trig, and Geometry. If my instructors were like Dr. Jim it's possible that I may have learned to love those courses. If you have children in high school Algebra this is a must gift for them. Or if you are thinking like me to make the plunge again and not sure if you end up drowning first, this book is a must read for you.

A new book is about to be released by Dr Howard Thomas Brady called - Mirrors and Mazes: a guide to the climate debate.

In Australia there are two easy-to-read shorter books showing very different sides of the climate debate. One was Tim Flannery’s - The Weather Makers - published in 2005. The other is this new book by Dr Howard Thomas Brady.

This is indeed one of those rare book on climate: it is a concise and clear reader, while also profoundly rich in its concepts, analysis and scope, addressing the critical issues in the climate debate. There are no distracting emotional attacks on individuals. There is humour. There are some interesting stories. There are straightforward analyses of questions we all ask: Is sea level rising? Are the Poles melting? Are storms getting worse? Are temperatures rising? How do climate models work? What about future climate shocks?

Dr Brady questions the panic in the climate debate. His underlying theme is that the sensitivity of the world’s climate system has been overstated by climate models that multiply the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide three times due to the effects of clouds and water vapour.

Dr Brady is an Australian who was an Antarctic scientist years ago. He was on four expeditions to Antarctica with the US Office of Polar Programs. His Masters of Science and PhD theses were on the past geological history of Antarctica. As recently as 2011, an American university presented him with its 2011 Alumnus Scientist of the Year Award for his contributions to climate research; a rare award for an Australian.

The public should look forward to this great book that will be available in late February.

Very well-thought out and superb diagrams

I can only repeat what others have said: this book is the most readable book on climate I have ever read. It appeared without fanfare, but once better known, it will be around for a long time due its content and its unique literary style.

The title is apt - trying to understand climate can often feel like walking through a hall of distorted mirrors and being lost in a maze.

A lot of thought has gone into this book - the title, the chapter order and the diagrams, which are gorgeous. Most books on climate have diagrams with some crude explanations that are usually in fine print. In this book, each diagram has a explanation walking you through what the diagram means. Each diagram becomes a story in its own right without reference to the text.

I was also impressed by the scope of the references. And when the author quotes other scientists he carefully tells the reader where they work and are from. I liked this as it showed how scientists in many countries have contributed to our understanding of climate.

I rarely do this, but I intend to buy more copies of this book as a gift to some of my friends interested in the climate debate.

Kent Greenfields lives in Texas with his wife and young son, and enjoys writing about the credit reporting industry and other topics.�

Several years ago he was a victim of credit card fraud, and he spent almost five years learning the ins and outs of the credit reporting industry while going through the process of learning effective ways to remove inaccurate and negative information from his credit reports when the credit bureaus, credit card companies and collection agencies weren't complying with the law.

A former United States Marine, Kent is now the owner of an independent publishing company and a contributor to the Semper Fi Fund, a military charity which is dedicated to helping out military members from all branches of the United States military who are in need.�

has a lot of misc information

i ordered this because it is a favorite book of a friend of mine. apparently, ellen white covers so many topics in it, for instance, how people should interact with each other within a congregation when one of the members is doing something inappropriate. my girlfriend seems to think that ellen white hit the nail on the head and gives very good advice. i ordered the book for myself to use as a reference, and haven't used it yet to have an opinion of my own to share.
