Comprehensive and Interesting

I am not a practitioner, but a well-educated, research-oriented consumer. This is a really thorough and comprehensive series of reviews of current treatment practices in the trauma field. Each chapter is a stand-alone review on a particular focus, and chapters are grouped together when they concern similar treatment modalities. It's quite a bit to wade through in a sitting, but if the reader were not interested in all types and areas of treatment, he/she could read just the chapters of interest. The summaries are generally quite good, with good background material, and lots of references for the ambitious to find more to read on the topic. I appreciated that they summarize research in the field, and acknowledge when good research studies are lacking. I'm sure a practitioner would take a great deal more out of this book, but even non-practitioners with an interest in the material will benefit from this excellent book. Overall, it is well written and interesting to read.

Half Trauma Theory, Half Therapy Technique, All Good

I bought this book for a master's level social work class. It's the first textbook I've ever read cover to cover.

The first half gives in depth trauma theory, including the neurological components, multicultural treatment, and trauma theory development. This will either present you with new and necessary ideas, or a solid reminder of the foundation of trauma work. The second half consists of several chapters that outline specific types of trauma treatments, including transcripts from real therapy sessions. As a student, I appreciated reading about the variety of treatment methods that I can later pursue in post-grad training. I also think it would be good to know what other people are doing, even if I opt not to.

One warning, this book is specifically catered to complex traumatic stress disorder, not PTSD. Although, it does point out the connections and similarities.

Excellent summary of current think on Complex PTSD

This is an excellent summary of current thinking about Complex PTSD edited by experts in the field, after they had interviewed hundreds of Complex PTSD clients and their therapists. I was sold when they started by stating that the relationship between therapist and client is more important than any technique used. Everybody who works with Complex PTSD survivors should read this book.

Perfect for learning game programming and concepts etc.

I just finished reading and coding from all 678 pages of Mario Zechner's and Robert Green's book Beginning Android Games 2nd edition and I wanted to give others insight into my findings about the book.

First off I would like to say that I am completely satisfied with the purchase of this book.
I was attempting to write my first games based off random blogs and articles online and I was totally missing many important concepts and wasting time.

Also, please note this is not a LibGDX book. I actually bought it thinking that it was but I learned way more than I ever knew in creating a custom framework.

Usable for Beginners [9/10]
Yes if you have never made a game before this book walks you through every step of the way. If you have never or have very limited experience on programming then I do not think this book is for you since games are a rather more advanced form of programming.

Readability [10/10]
This book is written in a light helpful tone that really holds your hand the whole time. It made the experience fun and sometimes funny.

Grammer and spelling mistake proof[8/10]
There are a few mistakes in this book, sometimes even the code is incorrect. Using the mode [...] uses with a book bug bounty might pay off and keep amazon from getting a % of your profits.

Correctness of Concepts[10/10]
I am not a professional developer however I do my research and I have found no faults with this book. And the best part is with every simplification of a concept the book informs and encourages you that there is much more to this concept and you can look it up with suggested readings.

Exampled and provided resources [10/10]
Every example, image, sound, etc. is provided free of charge in one quick usable location.

Closing Comments: After reading this book can you go out and create a top selling android app? probably not. However, this book does open your eyes to the world of creating apps. After reading the whole book I feel motivated and inspired that I can create a successfull app but at the same time I understand that this is no small venture and it will take lots of time, sweat, and bloodshot eyes. Before I was sailing blind and this book did exactly what I expected it to do, it gave me a bearing. All in all I am happy and I would buy any other game programming books released by these authors. In particular I would like to see a very short and concise LibGDX book which assumes you have read this book first.

Personal Comment: I dont believe I am alone in this but most of us programmers became programmers because of a good game got us hooked. I like many others write business software everyday and while I am happy, creating games fills me with hope. So I would like to thank, Mario and Robert for teaching me and Google for the low barrier opportunity to get started in the world of games.

Good game design primer, but was this edited?

I've been programming for a number of years, especially with Java (since the first public beta release). Still, Android development was somewhat of a mystery to me. I thought this book would provide a fun way to get into the mobile scene, which it did.
The content is rich with great, concise explanations of some gaming theory, how graphics and audio actually work along with pragmatic code.

What I liked most about this book is the author doesn't want to produce a bunch of "copy/paste" programmers. I did find some errors in both code examples and grammar. I imagine some have been frustrated by non-working code when following examples. If I was a "beginner" there are things I know I wouldn't have figured out easily.

Overal, bravo to the author.

I am glad that I bought this book

I was already familiar with how to create a game using the SurfaceView using the documentation and online articles and became skeptical as to whether or not I should have bought this book. So far I have read the first four chapters. The book assumes you are going to make a game with a canvas, loop, update, and render methods even though simpler games can be designed using the Android UI elements and event based handling of updates.

I am glad that I bought this book, but recommend reading the Getting Started guide on the Android Developers website first as it explains more detail as to how Android works. It should help you read the book faster and you can probably read the majority of the Getting Started guide in one or two days. The authors are experienced and explain things clearly and straight to the point. You may also learn some good architecture design.

second in the fantasy series for middle readers

Will Stanton is the seventh son of a seventh son -- which means he lives in a crowded, noisy family! As the book opens, Will is excited about his approaching eleventh birthday, but he is also alarmed by strange goings on in the neighborhood -- the birds are acting strangely and none of the family's animals will approach him. Soon Will learns why these things are happening. He is about to be indoctrinated into his rightful position as the last of the Old Ones -- an ancient race that has been protecting the world from the conquest of evil. Now it's Will's turn to shoulder some of the burden and participate in the struggle. That's an awful lot for an 11-year old to take on! But Will is not alone. He meets others who will help him, in particular Merriman, a gruff but kindly mentor figure.
"This night will be bad. And tomorrow will be beyond imagining." Susan Cooper is a gifted writer and she sets a mood of foreboding creepiness right from the beginning. While there is an almost constant aura of menace, there is minimal violence, and Will constantly learns lessons of bravery, honor, and the importance of knowledge and learning. Sort of H. P. Lovecraft meets the Hardy Boys.
I agree with some criticism that there is too little struggle and problem solving involved in actually getting the six signs Will needs to find, but the story is still strong and a worthwhile read for middle readers.

Rich and "Dark"

Susan Cooper has yet to equal "The Dark is Rising," the second book of her classic Dark is Rising Sequence. Independent of the first book "Over Sea Under Stone," this is also darker, more magical, more intense, and one of the most beautifully written fantasy novels in existance.

Will Stanton is an ordinary boy, until his Midwinter eleventh birthday. On that day, he ventures out into a seemingly changed world. There, he encounters a sinister Dark Rider, then a beautiful white horse that leads him to a hidden place, where he finds two of the Old Ones -- the mysterious Lady and Merriman Lyon, one of the stars of the previous book. The Old Ones are immortal, powerful, wise, and it turns out that Will is the last one born.

And as an astonishingly cold winter settles over England, Will is taught some of the ways of the Old Ones, who fight the Dark (forces of evil, like the Dark Rider). He has one of the signs of power, but must get them all: Iron, Bronze, Stone, Wood, Fire and Water. And he must contend with the Dark Rider, his own failings, and a mysterious stranger whose future is inextricably entwined with his...

Susan Cooper is at her peak here. Will Stanton's adventures have a sense of unreal mystery and magic about them, where the slightest actions can have significance, time is easily manipulated, and two kinds of reality intersect. Welsh mythos and legend is interwoven more deeply here, including hints of the Arthurian tilt that was featured more prominently in "Over Sea, Under Stone." At the same time, Cooper accurately displays a more human side of Will, the side that is deeply attached to his family and home.

Her writing also becomes much more detailed here. In her first Dark is Rising novel, Cooper's writing was relatively spare and lacking in detail. Here, she more than makes up for it with intricate details about the halls of the Old Ones, the bustling farmhouse, and the eerie woods where the Walker wanders.

Nowhere to be found is the British-kids-on-holiday atmosphere. It's replaced by an warm atmosphere, and one of shocking, powerful magic. This isn't magic infringing on our world, but rather Will stepping from one to another. Her dialogue is more believable, even the little old lady bleating about the snowstorm; and Will tends to think, act, and talk like an eleven-year-old boy who is aged before his time.

Will himself is an astonishingly three-dimensional character: he flips between being a smart, quiet eleven-year-old to being an Old One, with all the power that suggests. This transition is not one that is handled lightly, as he gradually loses his innocent, boyish outlook and learns more about the battle between evil and good. Merriman Lyon is a more majestic character than in "Over Sea, Under Stone," and the reader gets a saddening view of the sacrifices he's had to make for his battle against the Dark.

Susan Cooper does an astonishing job with "The Dark is Rising," a spellbinding fantasy that secured the Dark is Rising Sequence as a classic. Truly an entrancing, magical novel.

OK---One of my faves!

On the eve of his eleventh birthday, Will Stanton's world began to change, drawing him into a legacy that would change his life--and the story of the long conflict between the Light and Dark for the fate of the world.

For he was the last of the Old Ones, quasi-immortals born to keep the world from domination from the Lords of the Dark. And in his time of learning, from the strangeness of his birthday eve to the worst danger on MidWinter's eve, he set in motion a quest for the six great Signs of the Light that alone could save the world from domination by the last and greatest rising of the Dark.

I adore this series, and this is one of the best written books in it. I'm fascinated by Will's double nature and enjoy characters like Merriman, Hawkins. And I'll never listen to Greensleeves again without thinking a little of the chimes of doors of time, or the hint of Paul playing a very old flute.

Marvelous.

This is a sequel to Over Sea, Under Stone.

He discusses his groundbreaking enlistment of black players, explains the "feud" with Texas coach Darrell Royal, condemns the hypocrisy of big-time college athletics, and berates sportswriters who base stories on opinion, not factual investigation. An Entertaining Read from "The King"

Love him or hate him, Barry Switzer is a college football icon. Published a year after his banishment from the University of Oklahoma (following a series of turbulent off-the-field incidents), Switzer tells all in his rousing autobigraphy, BOOTLEGGER'S BOY.
The title is not an exaggeration; Switzer's father was a womanizing, hard-drinking Arkansas bootlegger, while his quiet mother battled mental problems and an addiction of her own. Able to overcome such dysfunction (and some of his family tales are fascinating), Switzer was able to utilize his athletic ability to play football at the University of Arkansas under legendary coach Frank Broyles. When his college career was over, Switzer realized his calling was coaching; Broyles gave him the opportunity by letting the young lineman join his coaching staff. In the mid-60s firebrand coach Jim MacKenzie was hired to restore the football "monster" at OU, a monster that the great Wilkinson had created. MacKenzie offered Switzer a position on his coaching staff; Switzer became a Sooner, and the seeds of destiny were sewn.
Chuck Fairbanks, succeeding MacKenzie (who died tragically after just a year on the job), promoted Switzer to offensive coordinator. Switzer writes he was looking for an offense to revolutionize college football; an unorthodox, high-risk option offense, known as the "wishbone," captured his attention. Switzer installed the offense and the Sooners took off, figuratively and literally, as NCAA rushing records were shattered. When Fairbanks bolted in 1973 to go to the NFL, Switzer was handed the keys to the OU program, and the rest, as they say in the Sooner Nation, is history.
For sixteen seasons, Switzer commanded a college football powerhouse; during his tenure the Sooners captured twelve Big Eight championships and three national championships. Switzer attributes his success to his Arkansas upbringing; growing up, most of his friends and neighbors were African-Americans. As a result, Switzer was more than comfortable approaching black athletes--at a time when other major programs were tentatively recruiting minorities--while reassuring parents that he would take good care of their sons. His recruiting redefined collegiate athletics, opening the doors for black athletes nationwide to participate in Division One football.
Switzer's affection for his players is genuine. Page after page, account after account, the King (as he's known by Sooner diehards) fondly recalls his relationships with a plethora of All-Americans: the Selmon brothers; Joe Washington; Billy Sims; Tony Casillas; J.C. Watts; Keith Jackson; Brian Bosworth. Switzer was no stern disciplinarian, he readily admits it, and this "lack" of discipline created a perception of an outlaw program--a perception that came home to roost in 1989, when he was forced to resign by the OU administration during a series of troubling incidents that ultimately put the Sooners under NCAA probation.
Switzer defiantly addresses the NCAA allegations, refuting some and pleading "guilty" to others. To enhance his arguments, he points to antiquated NCAA regulations (and keep in mind, this book was written years ago), regulations that, Switzer maintains, permeate a double standard. As an example, Switzer argues, why is it permissible for a chemistry professor to dig into his pocket and buy an airplane ticket for a homesick student during Christmas break, but not an athletic coach? Switzer's defense, along with his account of the events leading up to his ouster, make for fascinating page turning.
Praise him or revile him, Barry Switzer's mark on college football is eternal, and BOOTLEGGER'S BOY is the King at his good ol' boy best. I only wish he would come back with a second edition describing his four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Three national championship rings and a Super Bowl ring. Not bad for a bootlegger's boy.

A bible for Sooner football fans

This book is something to be revered by Sooner fans. Barry's recounts of the great games and great people around OU's glorious runs in the 70s and 80s bears reading. I just re-read the book after keeping it down for a few years, and it just gets better with time. If any of you out there need ammo for those Barry bashers, you need this book. Barry Switzer is a great man, and every Sooner fan should remember that.
Barry covers his childhood, personal struggles, and his years at Arkansas. He then talks about those great 70s teams that we know get to see on ESPN Classic.
Probably the most interesting part is his line item by line item response to every NCAA violation that OU was found guilty of. Barry pulls no punches and is not afraid to admit guilt where he saw it. His candidness is something special.
You might find this book hard to find, but try your hardest and hit the auction sites, etc, you should be able to turn it up, and you won't be sorry.

Switzer rips the cloak off bigtime college football

As a Sooner alumnus and rabidly devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, I have seen many good and bad sides of "Uncle Barry" (as he is known affectionately in these parts) for a couple of decades. Granted, it was written before he coached in Dallas. But it is because I had already read this book -- and as a result, felt a strong understanding of him -- that I was able to hold Switzer largely blameless for many of the problems which befell the Cowboys during their late-90s fade. [Perhaps most other Cowboys fans should read this before they mindlessly ridicule him, too. It is enlightening!] Switzer is funny, smart and refreshingly devoted to his kids, as he shows here; but as an animated and sometimes overbearingly profane public person, he makes a much easier target for media ridicule than he deserves. Read this book and understand why he astutely asserts that the NCAA is an archaic clique of aging Great White Fathers (my term, hot his) who are clueless about the realities of today's athletes' lives. Read and understand why Switzer can make some of the dumb mistakes he has, but nonetheless possesses a keen intellect and sense of fairness. And finally, read it for its shocking tales of the wild life of this surprisingly complex man.

About the Author
Dr. Robert L. Mathis is professor emeritus of management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Born and raised in Texas, he received his BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. in Management and Organization from the University of Colorado. At UNO, he has received the "Excellence in Teaching" award. Dr. Mathis has co-authored several books and published numerous articles covering a variety of topics. He also has held national offices in the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and served as president of the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). In addition, he is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by HRCI. He has had extensive consulting experiences with organizations of all sizes and in a variety of areas. Firms assisted have been in the telecommunications, telemarketing, financial, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and utility industries. Dr. Mathis has extensive specialized consulting experience in establishing or revising compensation plans for small- and medium-sized firms. Internationally, he has consulting and training experience with organizations in Australia, Lithuania, Romania, Moldova, and Taiwan.

Dr. John H. Jackson is professor of management at the University of Wyoming. Born in Alaska, he received his BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University. He worked in the telecommunications industry in human resources management for several years before completing his PhD in Management and Organization at the University of Colorado. During his academic career, Dr. Jackson authored six other college texts and more than 50 articles and papers, including those appearing in ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, and HUMAN RESOURCES PLANNING. He has consulted with a variety of organizations on HR and management development matters and has served as an expert witness in a number of HR-related cases. At the University of Wyoming, he served four terms as department head in the Department of Management and Marketing. Dr. Jackson received the university's highest teaching award and has been recognized for his work with two-way interactive television for MBA students. Two Wyoming governors have appointed him to the Wyoming Business Council and the Workforce Development Council. Dr. Jackson serves as president of Silverwood Ranches, Inc.

Dr. Sean R. Valentine is the University of North Dakota alumni leadership and ethics professor and professor of management. Originally from Texas, he received a BS in Management/Human Resources from Park University, a BS in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management from New Mexico State University, an MBA in Business Administration from Texas State University, and a DBA in Management from Louisiana Tech University. He was employed in the hospitality industry for many years and was an officer in the Army National Guard. During his academic career, Dr. Valentine published more than 75 articles in journals such as HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RELATIONS, HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT QUARTERLY, EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTING RESEARCH, and BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH IN ACCOUNTING. His primary research and teaching interests include human resource management, business ethics, and organizational behavior, and he has received numerous awards and other recognition for his work. He also has consulted with a variety of organizations on different business matters.

Dr. Patricia A. Meglich is associate professor of management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Born and raised in Ohio, she earned her BSBA from Bowling Green State University; MBA from Cleveland State University, and PhD from Kent State University. Prior to entering academia, she spent 20 years as the human resources director for an automotive supplier, where she designed and implemented talent management programs and participated in numerous acquisitions and business process reengineering initiatives. Dr. Meglich was active in professional activities with SHRM and was awarded the national SHRM Award for Professional Excellence. She is certified SPHR and SHRM-SCP. She has published numerous articles in scholarly journals such as EMPLOYEE RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND THE JOURNAL OF APPLIED BUSINESS and ECONOMICS. She has developed several learning modules and course materials for SHRM and has received a number of teaching awards at UNO. She serves as a visiting professor at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and the Osnabruck University of Applied Sciences. She is committed to bridging research to the practice of HR and ensuring that HR professionals have timely, relevant information needed to successfully lead their organizations to success.

Excellent book for the most competitive finance jobs

This book was critical in helping me get an internship in trading with a high-profile hedge fund this summer. Throughout the interviewing process, over 50% of the technical questions that I received were discussed in this book.

While the book is geared towards more technical positions and does involve a fair amount of math, I would still recommend it even if you are looking for a non-technical position with a hedge fund or an i-bank, since this book contains a lot of brain teasers and logical questions that are commonly asked in all finance interviews to test how well you can think on your feet and under time pressure.

Bottom line: Very comprehensive, very rigorous, the best I have see for hard-core finance jobs. This book is definitely heads and sholders above all of the Vault guides.

This is a great book. However, please be aware the 16th ed is out there already and cheaper than this old version. Essential preparation for finance interviews

This is a must for people heading to trading firms, banks, or other financial service firms for interviews. These firms typically scout for a few skill sets. One is general brainpower, as hard as that is to measure. Another is the more difficult math in finance, derivatives pricing. This book covers both in a quick and easy format to let you see where you stand. Moreover, if you can master the material in the book then you will be ready for the majority of an entry-level interview.

The derivatives questions cover "plain vanilla" options pricing and some basic understanding of the principles behind the formulas. Most firms want to see that you know the terms in the Black-Scholes equation and how options prices depend on things.

The earlier part of the book I find even more impressive. It's a nearly comprehensive list of the brain-teasers you get in this process. That's where the employer is trying to measure general brainpower. Of course, a brain-teaser you haven't seen before will give you pause and maybe elude you in the stress of an interview. But after reading this book the answers could be at the ready. The set of brain-teasers through history is actually very small. That is after distilling all the variations on them such as whether you are weighing coins or cannonballs and such. And that set of puzzles, questions designed to test basic reasoning and logic, without depending on formal math, is well covered in this book. In fact, in many interviews I have only encountered one single brain-teaser that is not in this book (and it's not a very good one either).

Finally Mr. Crack inserts notes on the culture of banks which might scare or excite the prospective employee. This book is both good orientation and preparation for starting a career in finance.

It is still relevant and helpful ten years later. That said, there is one area this book totally misses (because of what's happened in the past ten years). That is programming questions. Especially in the past couple of years most interviews will look for some software development skill on top of the general brainpower and command of financial derivatives. Tests on C++ or OOP are common these days. For that material you have to look elsewhere.
