About the Author
Rhea Paul, Ph.D., received her bachelors degree from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1971, her masters degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1975, and her doctorate in communication disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981. Dr. Paul has published more than 60 journal articles and has authored six books. Her research on language development in toddlers with delayed language acquisition was funded by the National Institutes of Health. She has also held grants from the Meyer Memorial Trust, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Foundation, the Medical Research Foundation, and the National Association for Autism Research. Dr. Paul has been a fellow of ASHA since 1991 and received the 1996 Editors Award from the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. In September 1997, she accepted a joint appointment in the Communication Disorders Department at Southern Connecticut State University and the Child Study Center at Yale University. She spent the summer of 1998 as a visiting professor at the University of Sydney in Australia. Dr. Paul received a Yale Mellon Fellowship for 1998-1999 and the Southern Connecticut State University Faculty Scholar Award for 1999. She was recently awarded an Erskine Fellowship to spend a semester as a visiting scholar at Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand. The second edition of her textbook, Language Disorders from Infancy Through Adolescence: Assessment and Intervention, was published in 2001 by Mosby in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Paul has been teaching child language development and disorders courses for 20 years.

Case Example 1

Darrell is 4 years, 6 months old, but his speech is more like that of a much younger child. His parents report that he is very difficult to understand and they feel that he is becoming frustrated when he cannot make himself clear. They want him to improve his speech before he begins kindergarten next year.

Case Example 2

Jonah is a 7–year–old and has a severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. He uses behind&#ndash;the–ear hearing aids at home and an auditory trainer at school. His school district has referred him for reevaluation of his hearing, speech, and language and to determine whether his amplification equipment continues to be appropriate for him.

Case Example 3

Anna is a seventh–grade student with significant learning disabilities. She received speech and language therapy when she was younger but was dismissed from services in third grade. Although she receives special education assistance with reading and math, her current teacher believes that she needs more help and wonders whether language therapy would be beneficial at this time.

Case Example 4

Marlene is a 50–year–old woman who has had significant difficulty with communication since her stroke 8 months ago. She received speech and language therapy only for a short time, and her family would like her to pursue more therapy now. They believe that she could continue to make improvements in her ability to communicate if she has the appropriate help.

Case Example 5

Richard, 62 years old, recently underwent a total laryngectomy. He would like to learn to use esophageal speech.

Case Example 6

Thomas is a 27–year–old with a history of severe stuttering. He feels that his speech disorder is interfering with his ability to advance in his career.

The six individuals described previously all appear to have a communication disorder, but they have little else in common. You have been asked to evaluate and make recommendations for these individuals. How will you provide an appropriate assessment for each of these potential clients given the large differences in their problems and the varied assessment protocols that will be necessary to complete the task competently? These examples are provided not to overwhelm the beginning clinician, but to illustrate the breadth of the field of communication disorders. As different as the clients described previously may seem, they are but a sample of the variety of ages, functional levels, and types of disorders to which you will be exposed during training and later in practice. How is it possible to competently assess such a range of problems?

Despite the fact that the needs of these clients are indeed diverse, as are the assessment instruments you will use, there are some general principles that apply. This chapter introduces you to these general principles that guide the process of assessing any communication disorder and provides examples of assessment tools for a variety of communication disorders.

When you hear the word assessment, you may think of testing, but the two terms are not really the same. Testing is only one part of assessment. Assessment is the process of collecting and interpreting relevant data for clinical decisionmaking. The process includes a series of problem–solving activities to assist in making decisions that will result in effective management and intervention for clients with communication disorders. In this chapter, the terms diagnostic, evaluation, and assessment are used interchangeably to denote the problemsolving and descriptive process.

Various approaches to assessment in communication disorders have been described in the literature. One approach, derived from the medical model, makes a distinction between appraisal and diagnosis (e.g., Darley, 1991; Peterson & Marquardt, 1994). Appraisal is seen as the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data about the client. Diagnosis involves interpretation of these data in order to decide whether a problem exists and then differentiating the problem from other similar problems (i.e., differential diagnosis). In a medical model, emphasis is also put on identification of possible causes (i.e., etiology) and maintaining factors. Another approach is what Miller (1978) and Paul (2001) described as a descriptive–developmental model of assessment. In this orientation, the two phases are less distinct. Emphasis is placed on description of the client's present communication behaviors rather than on causal factors or categorization of the disorder. Tomblin (2000) also described a systems model of assessment. This model stresses the importance of the family and the cultural context in which the client must function. In this model, there is much emphasis on including the client's significant others in the assessment process to get information about the dynamics of the communication problem. There is a great deal of overlap among the various approaches, and there is no one correct model. For example, use of the descriptive–developmental model certainly does not preclude family involvement or consideration of the client's cultural background. It is more a question of relative emphasis. The specific model (or combination of models) to be used will depend on the philosophical orientation of the clinician, the setting, and the type of communication problem demonstrated by the client. For example, clinicians who work in medical settings may be more likely than other clinicians to perform assessments that fit the appraisal and diagnosis model. Clinicians who work primarily in educational settings may find the descriptivedevelopmental approach more useful.

No matter which setting you work in, you will be involved with professionals from other disciplines. Teaming and collaboration among professionals is recognized as the best practice for meeting the needs of clients with a variety of disabilities. Various models of teaming are used in the assessment process, including multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary. Regardless of the model used, remember that the client and the family are partners in the assessment process; that is, they are critical team members.

Before we can proceed further, several concepts that are important to the diagnostic process must be discussed. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a framework for considering health and disability through the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF; WHO, 2001). In ICF, disability and functioning are viewed as outcomes of interactions between health conditions (disorders, diseases, injuries) and contextual factors. Contextual factors include environmental factors (e.g., architectural barriers, social attitudes) as well as personal factors (e.g., age, education, profession). These factors and their interaction influence how the individual experiences a disability. In this framework, functioning is identified at three levels: at the level of the body or body part, at the level of the whole person, and at the level of the whole person in a social context. Disability involves a dysfunction at one or more of these same three levels: impairments are problems in body function or structure (such as aphasia following a stroke); activity limitations are difficulties experienced by an individual in executing one or more activities (such as difficulty producing speech); and participation restrictions are problems an individual may experience in involvement in life situations (such as the inability to converse with family). Although it may seem that we should be able to infer activity limitations and participation restrictions from a known impairment, this is not always the case. This can be illustrated in the case example of Richard, the man who underwent a total laryngectomy. Consider two different scenarios: first, that Richard is a computer programmer by profession, and second, that Richard is a trial attorney by profession. Although Richard's obvious activity limitation (inability to communicate by using speech), which is secondary to the impairment (laryngectomy resulting in a structural change to the body), is the same in both cases, the degree of participation restriction relative to his career may be quite different. In the first scenario, Richard may very well be able to continue his career with minor adaptations and compensations. Resuming his career in the second scenario might be more difficult and would most likely require major adaptation and compensation. Knowledge of the impairment is important in describing prognosis and determining an optimal intervention strategy. In Richard's case we know that, barring other medical problems, his status should be stable, and we make prognostic statements and intervention recommendations based on that knowledge. In other cases, with individuals who have neurological impairments known to be degenerative, it is equally important to be familiar with the associated symptoms in order to make appropriate prognostic statements and intervention recommendations. Thus, these issues of disability and functioning must be considered in a comprehensive assessment.

As you develop your clinical skills, keep in mind that assessment, like all types of clinical decision–making, should be undertaken with an evidence–based orientation. The American Speech–Language–Hearing Association (ASHA) has affirmed the importance of evidence–based practice (EBP), in which speechlanguage pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists use current high quality researchbased evidence in concert with clinician expertise and client preferences and values to make decisions (ASHA, 2005) (see Chapter 7 for a more in–depth discussion.). By applying EBP criteria, you will be able to choose maximally informative and cost–effective assessment protocols, form valid interpretations from the results, and make meaningful recommendations for treatment.

PURPOSES OF ASSESSMENT

Assessments are completed for various purposes. Understanding the purpose or goal of the assessment is important because it will affect the types of instruments and protocols chosen. The most common reasons for assessment described in this chapter are based on the works of Miller (1978, 1983) and Paul (2001).

Screening

Screening involves the collection of data to decide whether there is a strong likelihood that an individual does or does not have a problem that will require more in–depth assessment. Screening has its roots in medical practices used to identify those who are at risk for a particular disease or disorder (Salvia & Ysseldyke, 1998). Rather than yielding scores, screening results are generally described as pass or fail based on a predetermined cut–off score. A fail will typically result in a referral for more intensive follow–up assessment. You may be familiar with some common uses of screening. Most school districts screen children before they enter kindergarten in a number of areas including speech, language, readiness skills, hearing, and vision. Children who fail one or more of these screenings are referred for further evaluation. Another example is universal newborn hearing screening, now required by 38 states. Examples of frequently used screening procedures in communication disorders are provided in Table 3.1. As Paul (2001) pointed out, it is not always necessary to use a test published as a screening instrument. Any standardized test that samples the relevant areas efficiently and meets certain psychometric criteria can be used.

Screening is also an important component of comprehensive communication assessments. In addition to addressing the presenting concerns, it is important to screen other aspects of speech, language, and communication as well as selected collateral areas. You will see how screening procedures are included into the assessment of Darrell, the 4–year–old whose speech sounds immature. Most likely, you will decide to assess articulation and language skills in depth using several different instruments, both formal and informal. You will also need to screen other areas, however, such as fluency, voice, hearing, and the oral mechanism in order to determine the possibility that a problem in these areas is also contributing to the concerns that Darrell's parents have described. In addition, you may need to get information about related areas such as play and cognitive skills. These areas will be discussed in more detail later in the chapter. If the examiner suspects any problems in these areas, more in–depth evaluation should follow.

The names, faces and stories behind the most famous costumes from cinema are represented. From period films to contemporary, from mainstream to art films, from stylized costumes to naturalistic, the designers interviewed reveal their design process and the purpose of costume design, as well as what it's like working with stars and directors. The hushed tones of this poetry book describe the lives of generations of owls, who have lived in a redwood barn for "one hundred years/ at least." Johnston (An Old Shell: Poems of the Galapagos) evokes the rhythms of an owl's life through repetition of words and lines, equating the duration of the barn's existence with the infinite expanse of wheat, echoed in a spread of golden sky and grasses ("where wheat and sky/ are one"). The circular text revolves around nature's cycles, as when "one by one owls/ wake up/ and blink/ and hunt for mice/ while moons swell/ and shrink." In watercolor and pencil art, Ray (Jackrabbit) contrasts the glowing, golden tones of the wheat-filled barn with the cool blues of night. Ray does not shy away from the owl's predatory instincts; two illustrations show the fowl firmly grasping a mouse. Among the warmest of paintings are those depicting newly hatched owls with the same enigmatic, masklike faces as those of the parents who gaze down at them: "Old owls watching,/ new owls born/ in the redwood barn/ in the whisper of wheat." PreSchool-Grade 4-Johnston has created a tribute to the common barn owl. Her creatures doze "in the scent of wheat" and leave "the barn through a bale of light." Golden wheat tones suffuse Ray's watercolor-pencil and paint art. Author and illustrator run lyrical, but they don't lose sight of the bird's daily bread-the mouse. The center spread wordlessly depicts an owl aloft, a mouse dangling lifelessly from its beak, wings cutting through a dark night lit only with the merest sliver of moon. Elsewhere, as grown owls bring the newest offering to their loft-bound babies, sharp eyes will pick out the skeletal remains of previous meals. None of this is gory, just matter-of-fact: "Owls have hunted in this place, mice have hidden in this wheat one hundred years at least." The poetry and paintings will make children want to learn more about these mysterious creatures. No humans intrude on this venture into barn owl life and the species is different, but the book is a natural lead in to Jane Yolen's Owl Moon (Philomel, 1987).

A quiet, gentle story with good info on barn owls

This is another great bedtime story. The rhythmic words and repeating phrases roll off the tongue naturally in slow, calm tones. The watercolor paintings echo the quietness of the owls' lives. The minimal text gives a general feel for barn owls' lives. Simple and lovely.

Sweet, gentle bedtime story

My toddler son adores this book, and so do I. The text is melodic and engaging enough to be both captivating and interesting, but not dull in the way so many children's books can be. The illustrations are not as good as the text in my opinion, but still very good and intriguing for young children. This book quickly became a favorite bedtime story in our house, and is one I recommend highly to any parent whose child loves owls or animals in gerneral.

I liked this one more than the last one, I was really suprised
when Ferus Olin got bcaptured by the person who was trying to find him. In this book of the LAST OF THE JEDI series Jude Watson makes it much more intense the last one.

This book Changed My Life

I bought this book after seeing the movie, "Sensitives: The Untold Story! " Changing my entire life!

Things I have been attempting to change my entire life were just NORMAL attributes of an HSP!! I cannot thank Elaine enough for writing this book and for the documentary made with a Kick Start campaign! I took her test on line at her site... highly sensitive person test, and answered yes to all the questions! I cover up most lights on my computer, printer, router and such. I have no sounds except the error sound on my computer. Never could watch violent movies, sensitive to bright lights, strong smells, loud sounds. Can feel everyone when walking into a room. If you "think" you might be one, it could change your life reading this book! I think you only need to answer yes to about 14 of the many questions.

I totally understood why my parents treated me the way they did. I was overly sensitive to so many things and they did not know what to do about it! They did not know "why"! Same with friends and teachers and my sister!

I am a CHANGED person and I Highly Recommend this book to Everyone! Why? Because you might have a friend, partner, child who is highly sensitive and knowing how to treat them, can change both your relationships. It turns out not only are 15 - 20% of humans highly sensitive, so are animals and insects in the same percentages! It is a Natural Trait and not an illness or disease. Scientists can see it in brain scans and DNA testing. We have been misdiagnosed for decades as being shy, withdrawn, depressed and so on, which is not true. I love, love, loved this book!

"Specifically" written for introverted and shy HSPs.

"While most of our attention here is on the habitually introverted, extraverts will probably find it useful, too." Man, oh man, I wish I would have known this prior to purchasing.

A part of me feels wrong for rating this book, because it was not written for me. But I think it's important to let those picking up THSP for the same reasons I did, know that there is a strongggg focus on the introverted HSP.

If I was to numerically assign THSP a percentage, then I would say about 30% of the content applied to me as extroverted HSP. Of the 273 pages, there is only one eight-line paragraph devoted specially to "The Extraverted HSP". Had I known it was written for those inhibited, withdrawn, socially fearful HSPs, I don't think I would have bought it.

I liked the first chapter. I highlighted several portions I found to be incredibly accurate.

"HSPs can be instantly aware, whether they wish to be or not, of the mood, the friendships and enmities, the freshness or staleness of the air, the personality of the one who arranged the flowers."

"We reflect more on everything. And we sort things into finer distinctions. Like those machines that grade fruit by size - we sort into ten sizes while others sort into two or three."

Both of these insights I was already aware of, but found comfort in the confirmation. I found resonation in Dr. Aron pinpointing the HSP's highly conscientious, highly self-aware demeanor. From there on, however, I felt excluded much of the time; it was a slow fade into gradual and total disconnect.

Dr. Aron goes into great detail in the second and third chapter, explaining "arousal," a word she uses as a synonym for "stimulation," and the affect it has on an HSP. I found some of this useful and insightful, as I can be bothered by too much noise, bright lights, uncomfortable clothing, etc..., but the majority of the content is devoted to helping "shy" persons overcome the egregious label that has shaped so much of their personality. At the middleish portion of this book - which goes on for about 75 pages - these are the Chapters Titles you can expect to find: Appreciating the Introverted Style, Carl Jung on the Introverted Style, Making Friends, Learning More Social Skill, Best Social Advice for HSPs, Do you know the latest on overcoming social discomfort? ... For me, this is where there was a HUGE disconnect. I am not shy. I am outgoing, social, and enjoy meeting new people. Contradictorily, this book contains several strategies on how to help HSPs learn to be the three characteristics I just mentioned. I found myself flipping through the pages, fairly disheartened, trying to find something I could relate to.

What I was hoping for was a closer look at the more emotional side of living as a Highly Sensitive Person. I wanted the emphasis not to be on personality types, but on how the universal HSP absorbs life, seen through our very distinct, sensitive eyes. I did not want to be told I am special. I think by now, most of us anyway, have come to accept and understand that our sensitivity IS a strength, but one that often times appears as a weakness because our response every time is an emotional one. I wanted to read deeper about the HSP's evolution. I wanted to read about the HSP's heart and soul, and how everyday experiences and conversations and relationships affect The Sensitive Person's innermost being. Mainly, I wanted to spoken with - not at. For me, this book reads like a Spiritual Guru's research manual. Yes, there are real-life situations documented, but even those felt sterile and distant at times.

Wow… This book was INCREDIBLE!!!! I'm still trying to take in everything that is brought to the front of my mind that I never realized or even thought about until I read this book. I don't think this is just for sensitive people but for everyone. If anyone has dealt with any kind of trauma in their lives or as a child that causes you to be an internal person than I think this book is for you. It will help you start to realize that you keep yourself in a protective shell inside your body because that's where you feel most comfortable. This book will help you realize what you've done to allow yourself to stay there and not become the person that you truly were meant to be. It's time to start dealing with your past once and for all and move PAST it… Letting anything control who you are and what you do isn't good. There is more happiness in your life than you could ever imagine.. Again this is a MUST READ.

Excellent

I picked this up completely on a whim after hearing someone mention it online. It is absolutely an amazing work. To really get a feel for how far this country has come in 50 short years, and to really understand how far we have left to go, you need to read this.

As a white male, I've always been offended by the term 'white privilege', because it implies that I somehow didn't work for what I have. But having read this, I can finally appreciate it. My 'white privilege' has nothing to do with me not working hard and not deserving the things that I have accomplished. I have worked hard, and I do deserve those things.

But these are things that blacks never had the opportunity to do. No matter how smart they were, no matter how well dressed, or well spoken, no matter how *white* they tried to appear to blend in, they would never be given the opportunity to prove themselves on their own merits. Their opportunities were taken away before they ever had a chance to even attempt to do grab them.

And while I can definitely appreciate how far we have come in a relatively short time, I am now able to see with a fresh new perspective the things that are still wrong with our thinking today.

The only book I've ever thought should be required reading

Had you not known where John Howard Griffin was traveling, you might have thought he was deep within apartheid South Africa, or in a Joseph Conrad novel. But, if you, like me, learned in elementary little more about the hardships of the Jim Crow laws besides blacks having to drink from colored fountains and attend colored schools, you would probably never have thought that this country, the United States—in 1959—could have been just so backward.

Griffin is an extraordinary character whose life could have been so exciting in no other century but his own. As a student in France, he served as a medic in the Resistance, smuggling Jews to safety. When he enlisted in the U.S. Army, he was wounded twice in the Pacific, and went blind for ten years, so he knew what it is like not to see color. His blindness made Griffin uniquely qualified to comment on race, which he does without favor to black or white. Indeed, he calls both out on their prejudices. And he persuasively argues that Jim Crow made both races unfree.

In reading Black Like Me, you will learn the ugly roots of stereotypes of today. You'll vanquish any visions of politics being purer or more representative then. For those who nudged our country's course to better align with the arc of justice in the sixties, the decade was no smooth sailing, as we might imagine through hippies' rose-colored Ray-Bans. Griffin and his friends suffered deeply in personal terms to bring us this story. I'll always be grateful to him for giving me a perspective and sympathy I never had.

I chose this book because I heard someone mention the book to me in class and ever since then I have always wanted to read it. What this man does in this book is incredible and humbling. It is something very few people are willing to do. Therefore, I wanted to read about this extraordinary act.

Summary: Black Like Me is a book written by John Howard Griffin who lived in the United States during the 1950s-60s era when the Civil Rights Movement was in effect. Living in Mansfield, Texas John has heard of the terrible conditions and treatment that African Americans face daily, but he is frustrated at how little he can understand in his own white skin. The truth will always be obscured to a white man, because white men don’t want to acknowledge how poor the treatment of African Americans is. So therefore, John decides to make the color of his skin black. This decision will not only impact his own life, but his family’s life as well. His family is supportive of his decision, and prepares for John’s absence. Along with this, a black magazine named Sepia agreed to fund John’s experience. With the aid of medication, UV light, and skin paint, John undergoes the process of becoming black. Upon looking at himself in the mirror, John doesn’t even recognize himself. He begins his journey in New Orleans and eventually moves down to Mississippi and Alabama which are notorious for their harsh treatment of African Americans. John discovers a whole new side to the world where finding a drink of water is a troubling journey and even being acknowledged by a white person is unheard of. Unspeakable stories and accounts are given by John Howard Griffin in his book Black Like Me. The story of a white man turned into a black man truly depicts the stark differences between appalling differences in treatment based solely on the color of one’s skin. I just finished reading this book. If you are interested in finding out The Truth this is the book for you. It breaks down all of the illusions that are designed to incite fear. There is so much knowledge out there that people are "waking up"to what is wrong in the world at an alarming rate. Things have to change. There is no way around it. It's not difficult. People need to start thinking for themselves and rejecting what they have been told. Read this book, turn off your tv, and get back into nature. Eat healthy foods, meditate, and drink spring water. We have to consider our futures as well as the future of our planet. That is the key to a positive, collectively conscious evolution.

because it is been like this for centuries and how else could it be

We have been taught lies about everything ! We have been taught that there is a system and we have to support it . So we serve this system . There is no free will -but somebody told us that this is right and we believed him ! The world around us is falling in parts -but we still believe that this is how it is ! How else could it be ? Wars ,poverty ,social injustice -but we do nothing to change that , because it is been like this for centuries and how else could it be ? Great book Mathew LaCroix ! These are the things that the educational system should start with -not to teach us like right now how to be in service ! The truth about our consciousness and who we really are is " The Secret " which is been hidden from us so we can be controlled !Dalai Lama says: let one whole generation practice meditations and there will be no more wars ! We need to get out of The Matrix -because now is not just about slavery and exploitation -but it is a matter of surviving . Great book Matthew LaCroix !

Once You Finish this Amazing Book-The Delusion of the Illusion will be Lifted Permanently

Matt LaCroix has taken an incredibly complex topic (the understanding and the unraveling of the riddle of human history) and positioned it in a way that even the most basic seeker can read and understand. I especially like his analogy regarding the blue and red frequencies that have handcuffed the majority of the human population. For any real pursuer of truth, this book belongs front and center in your bookcase. My recommendation is to read it over and over again until every single kernel and nugget of wisdom is understood and personally identified with. You'll be glad you did!

System Administrators are not known for consensus and conformity. It doesn't take long for new admins to fall in love with a tool or a programming language (or to fall into hate). The Editor Wars are probably the most well known on-going dividing line, but faults can appear around any choice we can make.

This is what makes the books by Limoncelli, Chalup and Hogan (LC&H) so remarkable. If you ask most sysadmins what single book they should
read, the answer will almost certainly be "The Practice of System and Network Administration". They're going to have a harder time now, with the release of Volume 2: "The Practice of Cloud System Administration". (Just so you know, it's already known by the abbreviation TPOCSA) I think this is likely to become a must-read.

One of the tenets of TPOCSA (and of all quality design) is "Keep it Simple"). The authors present cloud administration in two parts. Pretty simple, eh? First they define the characteristics of their ideal system, then they go on to describe the methods that they use to try to achieve that ideal.

When I say "describes the system" I mean that in a somewhat abstract way. LC&H aren't talking about which database is best or how much
memory you need to render a movie frame. It turns out that all large scale distributed systems have a set of common characteristics. These,
along with the requirements for high reliability and robustness have lead to a set of best practices that have become generally accepted largely because they have been shown to work. The hitch is that most of them seem counter-intuitive and nearly all directly contradict standard practices of two decades ago.

In this section the authors also make clear the scope of what "System Administration" means. Up until the advent of virtualization and
ubiquitous high-speed networks it meant OS installation, and some network configuration. When the machine was ready it would be handed
off to some application and operations team for the rest of the lifetime of a host. The SA tasks would probably include backups and
periodic patching. (or at least that's what many people thought). Today System Administration and Operations are largely synonymous. This union even has a word: DevOps (which *is* contentious, so I won't discuss it further here).

So we're talking about a large-scale distributed system. When ever you have something big and made up of lots of parts you inevitably
have failures. Much of the rest of the book consists of ways to make that not matter, taking human nature and the "physics" of highly
complex systems into account to make robust seamless services which run well even as they are changing.

Scanning over the chapter headings after the section break I am struck by something which should have been obvious. This is a book about
Practices. The first section is really a glossary, a base of terminology and concepts on which to build. But what we build from
them, the system which results isn't just the our cloud application. The infrastructure that LC&H are talking about here is as much a
social one as it is technical. Each of the computational components is meant either to facilitate human communication or to remove
painful, time consuming or error prone tasks.

System Administrators are no longer just brick layers and janitors.They are involved in every phase of application life-cycle from
inception to a long continuously evolving life span. LC&H discuss the philosphy and practice of each phase, always considering that humans
are expensive (and error prone) while computation is cheap. Automation, documentation and monitoring are all reconsidered with an eye to minimizing drudgery and false rigor and replacing it with a mind-set that will evaluate what's really important: comprehension and communication.

I read Gene Kim's "The Phoenix Project" not long after it came out while I smiled and nodded knowingly all the way through, it felt a little like a unicorn story. I thought "This is nice, but no one in business is going to take a novel seriously as a model for business practice". Of course I was wrong, but I still think that something more is needed, not just a parable but a manual. The line where the authors cite Gene for "inspiration and encouragement" indicates that LC&H thought so too.

There really wasn't much in this book that was new to me. I think much of what's here is already fairly common knowledge. What TPOCSA has done is to bring together in one place the accumulated body of knowledge which has been growing and changing since the birth of the
Internet. Today's computer systems are a far from the mainframes, minicomputers and PCs which dominated the 1990s. There have been a
number of movements triggered by the changes since then; Agile development, the DevOps movement, Continuous Integration and
Deployment. TPOCSA brings them all together and reminds us that the methodology, the philosophy, the ideology are not what matters. The
System, running and serving reliably is what matters. All of the rest are just means to that end.

So who should read it? I think anyone claiming to be a System Administrator today should be conversant with what's here, but I think
the bigger impact will come when we pass it to a colleague, whether a developer or a manager. There's a lot of confusion around what Cloud Computing means, and TPOCSA gives us a common base on which to build our systems and our processes.

This book is excellent for anyone who works in a large-scale environment

This happens to be my first review ever, but I could not resist after reading this book. If you are practicing modern DevOps methodologies, agile, ITIL, etc, then this is the book for you. One volume covering every aspect of large scale infrastructure imho is priceless.

This book is excellent for anyone who works in a large-scale environment. Never before have I personally read a book that has covered almost every aspect of my career. I highly recommend this book to anyone who manages large scale systems. This book has helped me in my career, and has improved my view of so many of the topics included.

I wish there were more books out there like this; I could not put it down.

Very good!

Similar quality to the previous book by this team, The Practice of System and Network Administration, this book offers both a solid overview and a good list of "must do" steps to build and maintain a well thought out environment. Focusing on reliability, loose coupling and scalability this is, in my opinion, a must have book for system administrators who are following the evolutionary path to "DevOps" and "The Cloud", neither of which are really new practices as much as the convergence of things that folks have been doing for years.

Not just for people who are moving applications to AWS/Google/Rackspace etc, this book is somewhat more general, aiming at administration where the Service, not the underlying infrastructure, is the focus. A good thing since that's where the benefits to the business actually live.

Solid methods to measure your organization's current state and how to track your path to becoming more effective, with terms and metrics that your upper management folks are probably already familiar with. Not just technical or high level discussion but how to navigate the path from what you want to do to getting there.

This book is already one of my top 4 resources (along with The Practice of System and Network Administration, Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook, Visible Ops) for high level administration. If you are interested in implementing or improving your operations this is a book for you.
