He operated an FAA-certificated avionics shop in Leesburg, VA and is presently Publisher of Avionics Library. A graduate of New York University, he served in the U.S. Signal Corps as Communications Chief of an air-ground signal battalion, constructing and operating communications systems. He is an instrument-rated pilot with 3000 flight hours and attends avionics conferences in the airline and General Aviation fields. Troubleshooting Section was pathetic

This book purports to cover avionic systems, Installation, and troubleshooting. The "systems" section does a good job of covering the systems it does cover, communications and some navigation systems, and that's about all it does do. It does not cover anything related to the fuel, power, airdata, flight control or other systems of an aircraft that are also part of the "avionic" systems. It is obvious that the author has never worked as an avionics technician and views the "systems" of an aircraft from the point of view of a small aircraft pilot. The Installation section was severely lacking and the one-page "troubleshooting" section was a complete waste of paper as it contained none of the methodolgy used to isolate system problems in today's complex corporate and commercial aircraft. The book should be renamed to more accurately portray what it actually covers; "Comm/Nav systems." The current title is misleading and I was very disappointed with this book, considering its purchase price.

Great content, dozens of typos

This is a great primer if you are a student of or have general interest in airplane avionics. I throughly enjoyed learning about the technologies behind DME, VOR, Comms, GPS, etc. The many, many typos throughout the book lead me to believe this is a self-published book and the author didn't want to pay for a copy editor. If you can get beyond the errors (primarily gramatical), this is well worth a read.

Not as adversised or useful as a practical manual

I wanted a book that would help me understand how to install simple radios and matching VOR heads, intercoms, and audio panels. Two way radios have been around since the 1930's and audio panels since the 1960's so the installation technology is not that complicated at a fundamental level. You just have to have the right information. I wanted to learn how to read the pin diagrams and understand the terms used between manufacturers for the connections. How is the 3 wire microphone jack connected to the radio and what is the purpose and function of the three wires on the jack? The book did nothing to assist me in understanding the above. I was planning to make the simplest installation of a stand alone radio with the MIC and phone jacks and matching VOR indicator. I could not even perform that task after reading this book. The book discussed the most sophisticated, modern day equipment and large jet aircraft applications that would be of no use to a home builder or A&P mechanic working on small aircraft. The book did not even have a chapter on audio panels. To advertise as a practical, how to book is totally misleading. It is like so many of the so called aviation "how to" books in that it is an overview like the A&P textbooks. Publishing and advertising a "how to" book with a lot of fancy, glossy pictures and coverage of radar and the latest integrated systems with no basic or practical information addressing the simplest of installations is a waste of paper.

I Heart Lucy!

Knisley is one of my favorite cartoonists, and I love that her travelogues have taken off. I remember first finding French Milk in my library’s graphic novel section and wondering what it was all about. Since then, I’ve followed all her work and own all her books. I preordered this book almost a year in advance, but when it finally arrived, I wasn’t able to read it due to my grandma’s decline and sudden death. It hit too close to home, unfortunately. Today, I preordered her next book, Something New: Tales from a Makeshift Bride, due to be released in May. That prompted me to finally read Displacement. What a treat it ended up being!

Lucy decides to accompany her 90-year-old grandparents on a Caribbean cruise. Getting from point A to point B is only the beginning of Lucy’s concerns, as her grandparents’ health has taken a drastic decline in the last five years. While on the ship, Lucy gets an eyeful of how difficult it can be to be a caregiver and see your loved ones’ health deteriorate. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Knisley’s grandfather is a WWII veteran and she expertly weaves in segments of his war memoir along with memories of her grandparents when they were younger.

She just keeps getting better and better! I hope she never stops drawing and writing. She takes periods of her life and creates a graphic scrapbook for the public to look in on. I wish I was that talented. Also, how amazing to create such vivid memories? If you haven’t yet read any of her graphic novels, you are in for a treat!

Wonderful

Displacement is definitely challenging of a read if you're someone whose experienced caring for older relatives in any capacity. Once you've experienced it, you just know. Lucy and her grandparents had my sympathy through the trip whilst I read this comic. My own grandparents are starting to slowly change as age settles over them and it can be very scary at points to see such vivacious people start to fade.

The water colored illustrations within this book are lovely and lively in equal measure. You really get a strong feeling of people's personalities and feelings from Lucy's work. I strongly recommend this book to people who enjoy travelogues, a bit of humor and delving into mortality in a light hearted manner.

For those expecting a very structured comic with panel after panel leading you into the action- you'll be disappointed. Lucy's work in Displacement is very much looser and more about highlighting stronger moments than keeping a overly structured narrative. There is definitely a strong through line of Lucy's feelings, her grandfather's story and events on the cruise, but don't expect every moment to be in traditional comic panels. Displacement is very much about leaving you with a strong feeling than a strong 'story' akin to other comics I've read.

bittersweet and beautiful

I am a huge fan and this book was just another wonderful drop in the Lucy Knisley bucket. Bittersweet and quite sad, but that is to be attributed to the subject matter and the gravity with which she handled it. Beautiful and not sugar coated. I truly enjoyed this book and it hit home for me after losing my grandparents this year (in their 90s).

This text is well written, easily understood and absorbing. I believe that understanding others' beliefs is helpful in the understanding and acceptance of the diverse culture we live in as the world 'shrinks.'

Brilliant reference work

Absolutely well done reference work. Professor Smart and his co-author have collated a set of representative material that show the faiths of the world in a clear and erudite light.

The book presents all of the world religions in a favorable light, since the purpose is not a critique, but a selection of texts that show each faith in the best possible manner.

After meeting Professor Smart in the 80s, I can safely say that the style of the book well represents his brilliant style.

Highly useful, and cogently exact.

Dominating Style

Great book. I have been on the brink of a tennis championship at my club more than once....and failed every time. I completed the program in the 60 days as suggested by the author. It helped me earn my first tournament title win. I have read many, many tennis books and had countless lessons and none helped me the way the conditioning routines found in this book helped me. I've stepped up my game and now have the edge I have been looking for. I look forward to going through this program at least twice each year. Thank you!

Fantastic program! Writing is great - pictures make the training programs really easy to follow. I felt stronger and my game improved immediately. The books is saving me a ton of money, because with the book I no longer needs lessons - my game is improving every day - I see a championship in my future...
